Overview

The CKNPLKR Chicken Feather Plucker is an electric-powered device designed for efficiently removing feathers from poultry. It is intended for consumer use and not for professional or commercial applications. The unit is capable of accommodating one chicken, approximately 8 lbs, at a time.

Function Description:

The primary function of the CKNPLKR is to pluck feathers from scalded chickens using a rotating drum equipped with rubber fingers. The process involves placing a scalded bird into the tub, where the rotating fingers agitate and remove feathers. An irrigation ring allows for water to be introduced during operation, aiding in the feather removal and flushing process. The unit is designed to be used outdoors and includes safety features to ensure proper operation and user protection.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Type: Electric
  • Horsepower: 3/4 HP
  • Voltage/Wattage/Amperage: 120V / 550 Watts / 5 Amps
  • Rotational Speed: 300 RPM
  • Fingers: 114, 2-inch rubber fingers
  • Tub: Removable Stainless Steel Tub with Irrigation Ring
  • Hardware: Zinc Coated, Material Grade 8.8 mm
  • Power Cord: 6 Ft. with GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter)
  • Safety Features: Includes Safety Stop Feature, Magnetic Safety Switch, GFCI protection
  • Material: Food Grade Stainless Steel Tub
  • Wheels: Two 5-inch wheels
  • Tub Dimensions: 14 inches high, 16 inches wide
  • Tub Opening: 11.25 inches
  • Assembled Size: 30.5" H x 27" W x 22" D
  • Capacity: Accommodates one chicken, approx. 8 lbs.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The device requires assembly, starting with attaching the motor to the support legs using long and medium bolts, secured with 13mm and 14mm socket wrenches. Wheels are then attached to the leg braces with cotter pins. The drum is lowered onto the motor, ensuring alignment of "TOP" to "BOTTOM" markings to engage the Magnetic Safety Switch. Finally, the tub is attached to the feather pan and secured with three buckle clamps and carabiners. The tub is further secured with a left-threaded short bolt and domed washer, requiring a left turn to tighten.
  • Operation Preparation: Before use, all bolts must be securely tightened, and buckle clamps fastened. The unit must be plugged into an outlet, and the RESET button pressed. The power switch is then turned to the ON position to begin operation.
  • Poultry Preparation: Chickens must be scalded in a separate pot of hot water (140-150 degrees Fahrenheit) before plucking. Protective rubber gloves are recommended. Dish soap can be added to the scalding water to help break down skin oils and facilitate feather removal. Waterfowl and turkey can also be processed, though they may require more soap in the scald water and potentially more time.
  • Plucking Process: A water hose is attached to the irrigation ring, and the water is turned on. With the unit running, one scalded chicken is dropped into the tub. The tub rotates for approximately 15 seconds until feathers are removed.
  • Post-Plucking: After plucking, the unit is turned off, and the bird is removed. If finished, the water can be left running to flush feathers into the lower plate. The tub can be removed for thorough cleaning of all feathers.
  • Outdoor Use: The unit is designed for outdoor use only and should be covered when not in use.
  • Overload Protection: If the motor is overloaded, the unit will automatically shut off. The circuit RESET button can be pressed to restart the motor.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Keep hands, long hair, loose objects, and loose clothing away from moving parts.
    • Wear safety goggles during operation.
    • Do not overload the machine.
    • Keep children away from the work area; this is not a toy.
    • Never put live poultry into the machine.
    • Keep electrical cords suspended above water-collecting surfaces; never submerge electrical connections or cords.
    • Keep hands clear of moving parts; never put hands or any other body parts below the top of the plucking tub while the plucker is running.
    • The unit is equipped with a GFCI; never tamper with, disable, or remove it.
    • Never operate the machine without the plucking tub in place, as body parts can get wrapped between the feather plate and feather pan. A safety proximity switch prevents operation without the tub. Do not disable this switch; if it fails to stop operation when the tub is removed, replace the switch.

Maintenance Features:

  • After Each Use: Clean the unit with a solution of bleach and water. Run the bleach and water solution through the unit with the water turned on. Then, turn off the water, remove the tub and feather pan, and eliminate all feathers. Spray the unit a final time with clear water to remove all debris.
  • Annual Maintenance: Depending on usage, grease the shaft with food-grade grease once a year.
