Warning:
This unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-
covered, brush-covered or grass-covered land unless the engine’s exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting
applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator.
In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have
similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your Cub Cadet dealer or con-
tact the service department, P.O. Box 368023 Cleveland, Ohio 44136-9722.

What to do if my Cadet 1170 Lawn Mower engine will not crank?
    • J
      Justin NguyenAug 19, 2025
If your Cadet Lawn Mower engine won't crank, ensure the safety switch buttons are fully depressed. The PTO knob must be in the disengaged (OFF) position. Check that the battery is correctly installed with the negative terminal attached to the black ground wire and the positive terminal to the thick red wire. A dead or weak battery or a blown fuse can also cause this issue. Try charging the battery at six amps with a 12-volt automotive-type battery charger for one hour or until fully charged. Replace the fuse with an automotive type fuse of the proper amperage, after checking for loose connections in the fuse holder and correcting the underlying problem. Also check for shorts in the cranking or charging circuit, looking for damaged or pinched wires.

How to fix Cadet 1170 Lawn Mower engine that fails to start?
    • P
      Pamela WoodsAug 21, 2025
If your Cadet Lawn Mower engine fails to start, make sure the knob lever is in the disengaged (OFF) position and the parking brake is engaged. Also, check that the wire(s) are connected to the spark plug. Ensure the throttle lever is in the FAST position and the CHOKE control is pulled out. Fill the tank with clean, fresh gas (less than 30 days old). Finally, clean the fuel line or replace the fuel filter and clean, adjust the gap, or replace the spark plug. You may also try to crank the engine with the throttle in the FAST position.

Why does my Cadet Lawn Mower engine crank but will not start?
    • L
      Lisa BrownAug 23, 2025
If your Cadet Lawn Mower engine cranks but doesn't start, the throttle or choke might not be in the correct starting position. Refer to the operation section of the manual for proper positioning. Also, check if the gasoline tank is empty and fill it if needed. A plugged fuel line or in-line fuel filter can also be the culprit; remove and clean the fuel line, and replace the fuel filter if necessary. Ensure the spark plug lead is connected. If there's still no spark, have the engine's magneto serviced by your Cub Cadet dealer. A dirty air cleaner may also prevent the engine from starting.

Why is my Cadet 1170 Lawn Mower engine smoking?
    • P
      pateldiamondAug 26, 2025
If your Cadet Lawn Mower engine is smoking, it might be due to overfilled engine oil. Check the oil level and correct if necessary. Another cause could be the engine losing crankcase vacuum. Inspect the dipstick to ensure it is correctly seated and not broken; replace if defective. Also, the engine breather might be defective and need replacement.
