Overview

The Carlon MRS Industrial Meter is an electric contacting multi-jet meter designed for industrial applications requiring an economical solution for water flow measurement. It is particularly suited for situations needing good tolerance to contaminants, an electrical output signal, and total volume registration. The meter's design prioritizes reliability and affordability, featuring an easy-to-read register display. When used with Carlon's timers and controls, it allows for the creation of customized systems tailored to specific application requirements. These industrial meters meet or exceed AWWA specifications.

Function Description:

The MRS meter measures water flow using a multi-jet mechanism and provides an electrical output signal for total volume registration. This allows for remote monitoring and integration into control systems. The meter is designed to work with various contact pulse settings, which are pre-set at the factory according to customer specifications. These settings can be configured for Gallons Per Contact (GPC), Liters Per Contact (LPC), or Cubic Feet Per Contact (CFPC). The meter's ability to provide an electrical output makes it suitable for automated systems where precise water usage data is critical.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Reed Switch: Dry contact type, normally open, 24V, 100mA maximum. This specification indicates the electrical characteristics of the output signal, which is crucial for interfacing with control systems.
  • Pressure Rating: Maximum 150 psi. This defines the maximum operating pressure the meter can withstand without damage, ensuring its suitability for various industrial pipelines.
  • Temperature Range: 35°F - 122°F (1.6°C - 50°C). It is important to protect the meter from freezing temperatures, as this can cause damage.
  • PH Level Range: 6.5 - 8.0. This indicates the acceptable pH range of the water being measured, ensuring the meter's material compatibility and longevity.
  • Accuracy: +/- 1.5% of maximum flow when operating between minimum and maximum flow range. This specifies the precision of the meter's measurements, which is vital for applications requiring accurate water usage data.
  • Register Options: U.S. Gallons, Liters (Cubic Feet options available upon consulting the factory). This flexibility allows users to choose the unit of measurement that best suits their needs.
  • Available Sizes: From 5/8" x 3/4" to 2". This range of sizes accommodates different pipe diameters and flow rates.
  • Continuous Flow Rates:
    • 5/8" x 3/4" (750MRS): 10 GPM
    • 3/4" x 3/4" (7575MRS): 15 GPM
    • 1" (1000MRS): 25 GPM
    • 1 1/2" (150MRS): 50 GPM
    • 2" (200MRS): 80 GPM
    • The continuous flow rate is a critical factor in selecting the appropriate meter size, as it should be based on the actual continuous flow rather than just the pipe size.
  • Flow Ranges:
    • 5/8" x 3/4" (750MRS): 1/4 - 20 GPM
    • 3/4" x 3/4" (7575MRS): 1/2 - 30 GPM
    • 1" (1000MRS): 3/4 - 50 GPM
    • 1 1/2" (150MRS): 1 1/2 - 100 GPM
    • 2" (200MRS): 2 - 160 GPM
  • Dimensions (Length x Height x Width):
    • 5/8" x 3/4" (750MRS): 7 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 3 5/8"
    • 3/4" x 3/4" (7575MRS): 7 1/2" x 4 3/8" x 3 7/8"
    • 1" (1000MRS): 10 1/4" x 4 1/2" x 4"
    • 1 1/2" (150MRS): 11 7/8" x 6" x 5"
    • 2" (200MRS): 11 7/8" x 7" x 6 1/2"
  • Connection Length (X2):
    • 5/8" x 3/4" (750MRS): 2"
    • 3/4" x 3/4" (7575MRS): 2"
    • 1" (1000MRS): 2 1/4"
    • 1 1/2" (150MRS): 2 3/8"
    • 2" (200MRS): 2 3/4"

Usage Features:

  • Ordering Information: When ordering, specify the model number followed by the desired contact pulse setting (G for Gallon, L for Liters, or C for Cubic Feet). For example, "150MRS-10 GPC" indicates a 1 1/2" meter with a gallon register and 10 gallons per contact.
  • Available Contact Settings: The meters come with pre-set contact settings from the factory. These can include 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 GPC, and 1, 10, 100, or 1000 LPC. Not all settings are available for all meter sizes (e.g., N/A for certain combinations).
  • Industrial Use Only: A crucial warning states that the meter is "INTENDED FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY" and "DO NOT USE WITH WATER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION." This highlights its specific application and safety considerations.
  • Customized Systems: The MRS meter can be integrated with Carlon's timers and controls to create bespoke systems tailored to specific application requirements, offering flexibility in system design.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Instructions:
    1. Flush the line: Before installation, thoroughly flush the plumbing line to remove any contaminants that could enter and damage the meter.
    2. Horizontal installation: Install the meter horizontally with the register facing up and the inlet port aligned with the water supply line. This ensures proper operation and accurate readings.
    3. Outdoor protection: For outdoor installations, protect the meter from direct exposure to the elements to prevent damage and ensure longevity.
    4. Backflow protection: Protect the meter from backflow of water in the direction opposite to the indicated flow direction.
  • Helpful Hints:
    1. Slow-Closing Valve: Installing a Carlon Slow-Closing Valve downstream of the water meter can prevent water hammer in the system, which could otherwise damage the meter.
    2. Strainer Installation: Installing a Carlon Strainer upstream of the water meter is recommended. This protects the meter and any other in-line process equipment from becoming jammed by particulate matter in the system, ensuring smooth operation and extending the life of the equipment.
  • Warranty: Carlon Meter, Inc. provides a warranty for its products, covering defects in material or workmanship for a period of twelve months from the date of purchase. Customers can contact the company to obtain a complete statement of warranty.
