Even in the short term, it can fluctuate considerably which is why
repeated measurements can provide different results. If the patient
records his blood pressure over the course of the day, it can there-
fore provide valuable support for the doctor.
Blood pressure measured directly in the morning after getting up
and before breakfast when the person is at rest is described as the
fundamental blood pressure. In practice, this is very difficult to
measure.
In order to record it as precisely as possible in this environment,
however, it makes sense to carry out the monitoring at home.
The following new standard values for blood pressure have been
defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) without reference
to age:
Assessment
Systolic
(mm Hg)
Diastolic
(mm Hg)
Optimal blood pressure < 120 < 80
Normal blood pressure 120–129 80–84
High-normal blood pressure 130–139 85–89
Mild hypertension (level 1) 140–159 90–99
Medium hypertension (level 2) 160–179 100–109
Severe hypertension (level 3) > 180 > 110
