INTRODUCTION
UsingaManifoldGaugeSet
Whenusingamanifoldgaugesettodiagnose,recharge,orservicethetractorairconditioningsystem:
1.Besurethatallequipmenthoselinesarettedwithshutoffvalvesorcheckvalveswithin30cm(12in)oftheir
endsandthatthevalvesareclosed.Thiswillensurethatonlyminimalquantitiesofrefrigerantsescapetothe
atmosphere,andthatonlysmallamountsofmoistureandothercontaminantscanenterthesystem.
2.Besurethatallequipmentincludingtheconnectinghoselinesandmanifoldsare:
-Compatiblewiththerefrigerantintheairconditioningsystem;
-Freeofallcontaminants;
-Usedonlyforthesametypeofrefrigerantinthesystem.
3.Becertainthatallshutoffvalvesareclosedtightlybeforeconnectingthemtotheairconditioningsystemorcharging
source.
4.Connectthemanifoldgaugesettotheunitaccordingtotheinstructionssuppliedbythegaugemanufacturer.
5.Performthedesireddiagnosticandserviceoperation.
6.Closetheshutoffvalvesontheservicehoses.
7.Disconnectthehosesfromthesystem.
NOTE:Attachthehosestorecoveryorrecyclingequipmentwheneverdisconnectingthemanifoldgaugesetfrom
theairconditioningsystem,emptyingrefrigerantfromit,ormovingthecenterhosetoanotherdevicewhichcannot
acceptrefrigerantpressure.Removetherefrigerant,lubricant,andcontaminantsfromthehoses.
CheckingRefrigerantforExcessAir
Attimesyoumayquestionwhetherornotacontainerofrefrigeranthasbeenrecycled.Onecheckwhichcanbedone
intheshopistodetermineifthereisexcessairmixedinwiththerefrigerant.Thischeckisasimplecomparisonof
thecontainerpressurewiththeoreticalpressureataknowntemperature.Ifthepressureisequaltoorlessthana
theoreticalvalueofusablepurityestablishedforR134A,thecontainerdoesnothaveexcessair.
NOTICE:Using
R134Awithexcessairwillresultinhighersystemoperatingpressuresandmaycausedamagetothe
airconditioningsystem.
Dothischeckinthefollowingmanner:
1.Storethecontainerforatleast12hoursataknowntemperatureof18.3°C(65°F)orhigher.Thecontainermust
notbeindirectsunlightorundertheinuenceofanyotherdirectsourceofheat.
Carryoutallofthenextstepsinthesameareainwhichthecontainerisstored,asitisveryimportantthatthe
temperatureofthecontainerremainstable.
2.Attachanappropriatepressuregaugetothecontainer.Thispressuregaugeshouldreadinincrementsof6.9kPa
(1psi)
3.Useacalibratedthermometertomeasuretheairtemperaturewithin10cm(4in)ofthecontainersurface.
4.Comparethepressureinthecontainerwiththepressureshownforthetemperatureofthetankfor
R134A.Ifthe
pressureinthecontainerisequaltoorlessthanthepressureinthetable,therefrigerantinthecontainermeets
therequirementsforexcessair.
Ifthepressureisgreaterthanshowninthetable,youmaystillbeabletousetherefrigerantbyproceedingtostep

5.Ifthepressureexceedsthatofthetable,connectthetanktorecoveryorrecyclingequipmentinsuchawayasto
allowyoutocontinuetomonitortankpressure.
6.Bleedasmallamountofvaporfromthetankintotherecoveryorrecyclingequipmentuntilthetankpressureis
belowthatshowninthetableforthetemperatureatwhichthetankwasstored.Closetheshutoffvalvesinthe
recovery/recyclingequipmentservicehose.
NOTICE:Thisprocessmaycausethetemperatureofthetanktodrop.
7.Allowthetanktemperaturetorestabilizeatthetemperatureofthestorageroombyshakingitandallowingittosit
inthesamespotforuptoanother12hours.
