This involves disconnecting the negative battery cable and B+ alternator wire, connecting a millivoltmeter (5) between the positive battery terminal clamp and D+ wire (3), and an ammeter (2) between the B+ alternator terminal and the D+ wire. A varying load resistance (4) is connected, and the engine is run at 2000 rev/min while decreasing resistance until the ammeter reads 45 or 65 A. The millivoltmeter reading should not exceed 400 millivolts. Readings above this indicate excessive resistance, while readings below 400 millivolts with insufficient power output suggest an alternator component malfunction.
