Do you have a question about the Case CX290B and is the answer not in the manual?
This document is a service manual for the CASE CX290B Crawler Excavator, providing detailed information for maintenance, repair, and operation.
The manual begins with general safety information and standard torque specifications for cap screws and nuts. It emphasizes the importance of following safety messages, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and adhering to specified procedures for checks and tests. It also provides guidelines for cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of components, stressing the use of genuine Case service parts and specified oils and lubricants to ensure proper functioning and warranty coverage.
Cleaning: All metal parts, except bearings, should be cleaned in a suitable solvent or by steam cleaning, avoiding caustic soda. After cleaning, parts should be dried and oiled. Oil passages should be cleaned with compressed air. Bearings should be cleaned in a suitable solvent, air-dried (not with compressed air), and then oiled.
Inspection: All disassembled parts must be inspected for wear or damage. Worn or damaged parts should be replaced. Minor scoring or grooves can be removed with a hone or crocus cloth. A visual inspection is crucial to identify wear, pitting, or other damage that could lead to early failures.
Bearings: Bearings should be checked for smooth action. If a bearing is loose or rough, it must be replaced. After washing in a suitable solvent, bearings should be air-dried and oiled. For needle bearings, any metal protrusions in the bore or edge must be removed before pressing them into position. Petroleum jelly should be applied to the inside and outside diameters of needle bearings before installation.
Gears: All gears must be checked for wear and damage, and replaced if necessary.
Oil seals, O-rings, and gaskets: Always install new oil seals, O-rings, and gaskets, applying petroleum jelly to them during installation.
Shafts: Shafts should be inspected for wear or damage, particularly on bearing and oil seal surfaces.
Service parts: Only genuine Case service parts should be used. The Parts Catalog should be consulted for correct part numbers. Failures resulting from the use of non-genuine parts are not covered by warranty.
Lubrication: Only oils and lubricants specified in the Operator's or Service Manuals should be used. Failures due to the use of non-specified oils and lubricants are not covered by warranty.
The manual uses a warning symbol to highlight important safety messages, indicating a risk of serious injury or death if not followed. Key safety instructions include:
The manual specifies tightening procedures for cap screws and nuts, emphasizing alternating tightening to ensure even torque application. For cap screws where Loctite was used, cleaning with light oil or solvent and drying is required before applying 2-3 drops of Loctite to the threads and tightening. A torque table provides specific values for different screw sizes (M6 to M20) in both Nm and lb-ft, along with corresponding spanner sizes.
This section details the technical specifications of the CX290B Crawler Excavator, including type, serial number, fluids, lubricants, main data, performance, dimensions, component weights, and wear limits for the track assembly and attachment mobile joints.
Type, Serial Number, and Year of Manufacture: The manual instructs users to provide the machine's type, serial number, year of manufacture, and serial numbers of hydraulic and mechanical components when ordering parts or seeking assistance. A sample identification plate is shown.
Fluids and Lubricants: Lubricants must have correct properties for each application, and conditions of use must be respected.
Engine Oil: CASE/AKCELA No. 1 engine oil is recommended for all operating conditions. If unavailable, use oils corresponding to ACEA E7 or API CI-4 categories. An oil viscosity/oil range chart is provided, showing suitable SAE grades (10W, 20W, 30, 40, 10W30, 10W40, 10W60, 15W40, 20W60, 5W30, 0W30) for various ambient temperatures, distinguishing between mineral, semi-synthetic, and synthetic bases.
Fuel: Use ASTM D975 grade No. 2-D fuel. Using other fuel types can lead to power loss and high consumption. For cold weather (below -7°C), a mixture of No. 1-D and No. 2-D fuels is provisionally approved. Fuel must be free from dust, have proper viscosity, high cetane number, good fluidity at low temperatures, low sulfur content, and very little residual carbon. Recommended standards include JIS No. 2, DIN 51601, SAE-J-313C No. 2-D, and BS/2869-1970 Class A-1. Using non-recommended fuels can damage the fuel injection system and engine, voiding the warranty. Used engine oil should not be mixed with diesel fuel. Fuel additives should be used only after consulting a supplier or CASE Dealer. The fuel tank should be filled at the end of the day in cold weather to prevent condensation. Fuel storage tanks should be placed outdoors, kept cool, and drained regularly to remove water and impurities.
Anti-freeze/Anti-corrosion: Use anti-freeze in all seasons for cooling system protection. CASE/AKCELA: PREMIUM ANTI-FREEZE (MS 1710) is recommended. For temperatures down to -38°C, mix 50/50 with water. Do not mix products of different origins or brands.
Environment: Emphasizes environmental responsibility: do not dispose of used fluids or lubricants on the ground or in leaking receptacles. Contact local recycling centers or CASE Dealers for proper disposal methods.
Plastic and Resin Parts: When cleaning plastic parts (console, instrument panel, indicators), use only water, soap, and a soft cloth. Avoid petrol, kerosene, or paint solvents, as they can cause discoloration, cracks, or deformation.
