Overview

This document describes the operation of a CASIO watch, model 3403, providing a comprehensive guide to its features, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The watch offers a variety of timekeeping and utility functions. Its core capability is displaying the current time and date, with options for 12-hour or 24-hour formats and a full auto-calendar that adjusts for different month lengths and leap years until 2099. The time and date settings are configurable, allowing users to set the time zone, summer time (Daylight Saving Time), and specific hour, minute, second, year, month, and day.

A prominent feature is World Time, which allows users to view the current time in 100 cities across 35 time zones globally. This is particularly useful for travelers or those who need to keep track of multiple time zones. The watch displays the city name and its corresponding time, with an option to quickly scroll through different cities. Summer time settings can be configured independently for each time zone, except for UTC.

The watch includes Alarms and an Hourly Time Signal. Up to five independent alarms can be set, each capable of sounding a tone and flashing the display illumination, or vibrating for approximately 10 seconds when the preset alarm time is reached. Alarms can be configured as one-time, daily, or snooze alarms. The snooze alarm sounds up to seven times at five-minute intervals. The hourly time signal provides a tone and display illumination flash, or vibration, every hour on the hour. Users can choose between a tone/illumination alert or a vibration alert method for both alarms and the hourly time signal.

A Stopwatch function is integrated, capable of measuring elapsed time up to 1000 hours in 1/100-second increments. It supports standard elapsed time measurement, cumulative time, and split times. The stopwatch can continue measuring even if the user switches to a different mode.

The Timer function allows for countdowns from a preset start time, configurable in one-second increments up to 24 hours. Similar to alarms, the timer can be set to sound a tone and flash the display illumination, or vibrate, when the countdown reaches zero. The timer can also run in the background while the watch is in Timekeeping Mode.

Usage Features

The watch's operations are primarily controlled through a set of buttons, labeled A, B, C, and D, along with a dedicated light button (L). The interface is designed for intuitive navigation between different modes, including Timekeeping, World Time, Alarm, Stopwatch, and Timer, by pressing button C.

Display Indicators provide visual cues for various active functions:

  • Alarm indicator: Shows when an alarm is turned on.
  • MUTE indicator: Indicates that the button operation tone is disabled.
  • Timer indicator: Flashes when a timer countdown is in progress.
  • DST indicator: Signifies that summer time is enabled.
  • Hourly time signal indicator: Shows when the hourly time signal is turned on.
  • Auto Light ON indicator: Appears when the Auto Light feature is active.
  • Vibration indicator: Indicates that vibration alerts are enabled for alarms/timer.
  • PM indicator: Displays for p.m. times in 12-hour timekeeping.
  • Snooze indicator: Shows when the snooze alarm is enabled.

Illumination is a key feature for visibility in low-light conditions. Pressing button L illuminates the display. The watch also includes an Auto Light feature, which, when enabled, automatically illuminates the display when the watch is angled towards the face at 40 degrees or greater. Auto Light remains enabled for approximately six hours before automatically disabling. The illumination duration can be specified for 1.5, 3, or 5 seconds.

Alert Methods: Users can choose between two alert methods for alarms and the timer:

  • Tone and display illumination flashing: The watch sounds a tone and flashes its display.
  • Vibration: The watch vibrates. This selection is made in the settings and applies to both alarms and the timer.

Button Operation Tone: The watch provides an audible tone when a button is pressed. This tone can be turned on or off, with a MUTE indicator appearing on the display when the tone is disabled.

Low Battery Indication: The watch features a low battery indicator that appears on the display when the battery voltage drops below a certain level. In this state, some functions, such as display illumination and alert sounds/vibrations, may become limited or disabled. The manual advises replacing the battery promptly if the indicator persists.

Maintenance Features

While the manual primarily focuses on operational aspects, it touches upon maintenance through the low battery indication. The presence of this indicator serves as a direct prompt for battery replacement, ensuring continuous functionality. The manual also notes that frequent use of the light can shorten battery life, implicitly guiding users towards mindful usage to prolong battery life. The "Auto Light Precautions" section mentions that static electricity or magnetism can affect Auto Light functionality, suggesting that users may need to reposition their arm if it doesn't work as expected. The rattling sound inside the watch when angling it for Auto Light is explicitly stated as normal operation and not a malfunction, alleviating potential user concerns.
