Overview

The Tonal Recall Analog Delay is a versatile and powerful effects pedal designed to deliver a rich, authentic analog delay experience with modern enhancements. It builds upon the character of legendary bucket-brigade delay chips, offering a distinctive analog sound coupled with a velvety tape-like modulation. This pedal goes beyond traditional analog delays by incorporating features typically found in digital units, such as tap tempo, optional bypass with trails, expression control over various parameters, and the ability to save presets.

Function Description:

The core function of the Tonal Recall is to provide analog delay, creating repeats of your guitar signal. Unlike many modern delays, the signal path remains 100% analog, ensuring a warm and organic tone. The digital control over the analog effects allows for unprecedented flexibility and features not commonly found in analog stompboxes.

The pedal features several key controls:

  • TONE (RAMP): This unique knob acts as a low-pass tone filter for the delay repeats. Turning it clockwise brightens the delay, while counter-clockwise darkens it. It also compensates for natural attenuation that occurs as the tone rolls off. Crucially, this knob is a "magical" control that can be assigned to ramp (rise or fall) any of the five main parameters (mix, rate, time, regen, depth) individually or simultaneously. Dip switches on the back of the pedal determine which parameters ramp and the direction of the ramp.

  • MIX: This control sets the blend between the dry (unaffected) signal and the delayed signal. Fully clockwise provides 100% wet signal, while fully counter-clockwise offers a 50/50 wet/dry mix, with the dry signal boosted for a better blend.

  • RATE: This knob controls the speed of the Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) for pitch modulation on the repeats. Clockwise increases the modulation speed, and counter-clockwise decreases it.

  • TIME: This knob controls the length of the delay. Clockwise increases the delay time (up to a maximum of 550ms), and counter-clockwise decreases it. This control is overridden when using the tap tempo switch.

  • REGEN: This control determines the number of repeats. Careful adjustment can lead to self-oscillating madness, creating beautiful, smeared, tape-saturated blurs.

  • DEPTH: This knob controls the intensity of the pitch modulation on the repeats.

  • S / L / B Toggle: This toggle switch selects the delay chip configuration. "S" (short) uses one MN3005 chip for delays from 20ms to 275ms. "L" (long) uses two MN3005 chips for delays from 40ms to 550ms. "B" (both) creates more of a blurry, reverb-like wash.

  • WAVE SHAPE Toggle: This toggle controls the shape of the waveform for the pitch modulation on the repeats. The left position is for triangle, the middle for sine, and the right for square.

Usage Features:

The Tonal Recall is designed for intuitive use with advanced capabilities:

  • Tap Tempo: The "TAP/HOLD" stomp switch allows you to set the delay tempo by tapping. The pedal remembers the last two taps. The maximum delay time achievable via tap tempo is 500ms. Holding down the tap stomp switch engages a self-oscillating "runaway" mode, with the regeneration knob setting the intensity.

  • Note Division Toggle: A dip switch on the back of the pedal allows you to select tap divisions (e.g., quarter notes, eighth note triplets). This is also important for selecting MIDI note divisions.

  • Bypass Stomp: The "BYPASS" stomp switch activates or bypasses the effect. It can be configured for momentary bypass via a dip switch. The pedal also supports "True Bypass" via a relay or buffered bypass with "trails" (delay repeats spill over into the dry tone when bypassed), selectable via a dip switch.

  • Presets: The pedal can store and recall presets. The "LOWER" toggle switch allows you to cycle through presets. The left position recalls one preset, the right position recalls a different preset, and the middle position always reflects the current knob positions. To save a preset, hold down the right stomp (bypass) for 3 seconds, then hold down both stomp switches simultaneously for another 3 seconds. An LED above the toggle blinks to indicate the setting is saved. If you recall a preset and move a knob, the LED above the toggle dims, indicating that the preset has been modified. To save the changes, you must save the preset again.

  • Expression Pedal / CV Control: A 1/4" TRS jack labeled "EXP/CV" allows for an expression pedal or Control Voltage (CV) input. This enables external control over various parameters. The pedal automatically detects whether an expression pedal or CV is plugged in. The range of the expression pedal can be customized for each parameter, allowing fine-tuning of the control range.

  • TAP/MIDI Input: A 1/4" TRS jack labeled "TAP/MIDI" can be used as a tap input or with a standard 1/4" instrument cable. It can also interface with a MIDI controller via an Empress Effects Midibox for more advanced control.

  • Ramping Functionality: The Tonal Recall's unique ramping feature allows parameters to automatically rise or fall over a set time. This creates dynamic and evolving effects. The "TONE (RAMP)" knob controls the ramp time. Dip switches on the back of the pedal determine which parameters ramp, the direction of the ramp (rise or fall), and whether parameters "bounce" (modulate back and forth) or ramp and hold.

  • Dip Switches for Advanced Configuration: A series of dip switches on the back of the pedal provide extensive customization options for the ramping function, expression pedal control, bypass type, and tap divisions. These switches allow users to:

    • Enable/disable ramping or expression/CV capability for Mix, Rate, Time, Regen, and Depth.
    • Control the direction of ramping (rise or fall) for Mix, Rate, Time, Regen, and Depth.
    • Enable/disable "Bounce" mode for ramping (parameters modulate back and forth).
    • Select bypass type (true bypass or buffered with trails).
    • Configure momentary-to-bypass functionality ("MoToByp").
    • Set tap control for ramping ("Tap Control").
    • Select tap divisions ("Tap Division").
    • Define the sweep range for ramping or expression control ("Sweep").

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features. However, as a high-quality effects pedal, general best practices for electronic devices apply:

  • Power Supply: Use a standard 2.1mm 9V DC center negative adapter with a current supply capability of 200mA or more. Using an adapter with less than 100mA will cause the pedal to not function properly.
  • Input/Output Impedance: The input impedance is less than 1MΩ, and the output impedance is less than 5kΩ.
  • Firmware Updates: While not explicitly mentioned, many modern pedals with digital control offer firmware updates. Users should check the manufacturer's website for any available updates or troubleshooting guides.
  • Cleaning: Keep the pedal clean and free of dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a dry, temperate environment when not in use to prevent damage from extreme temperatures or humidity.

The Tonal Recall is a sophisticated analog delay pedal that offers a wide range of sonic possibilities, from classic warm repeats to experimental modulated textures, all controlled with modern precision and flexibility.
