Overview

The Hydrocollator Mobile Heating Units (Models SS-2, M-2, and M-4) are designed to heat and maintain the temperature of HotPacs for therapeutic use. These units are essentially stainless steel tanks equipped with an immersion-type heating element and a hydraulic capillary-type thermostat, which work together to ensure a consistent and ready supply of heated HotPacs.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Hydrocollator units is to heat HotPacs to a therapeutic temperature range, typically between 160°F and 166°F (71°C and 74°C). The internal heating element warms the water in the tank, and the hydraulic thermostat regulates this temperature, ensuring it remains within the desired range. This allows for the continuous availability of warm HotPacs for various applications. The units are designed for mobile use, featuring casters for easy movement within a clinical or home setting. Some models also include a thermal cut-out thermostat as a safety feature, which will open the power circuit if the water/element temperature exceeds a certain threshold (190°F ± 14°F or 88°C ± 8°C), preventing overheating.

Usage Features:

Operating the Hydrocollator is straightforward. Before initial use, all internal contents should be removed, and the wire rack replaced. The drain valve must be closed, and the tank filled with water to approximately three-quarters full, with HotPacs removed. The unit can be filled from any standard faucet. Once filled, the unit is plugged into an appropriate electrical outlet (120 Volt~, 60 Hz or 220/240 Volt~, 50-60 Hz, depending on the model's decal plate). The unit is turned on by plugging it in, and turned off by unplugging it from the mains power supply.

The controls are located at the rear, near the bottom of the unit. The thermostat, which controls the water temperature, is factory preset to the normal operating temperature. If adjustment is needed, it can be done by turning the adjusting screw on the thermostat: counterclockwise to lower the temperature and clockwise to raise it. It is crucial not to turn the inner stem of the thermostat. After any adjustment, the water temperature should be checked with a thermometer, and sufficient time allowed for the temperature to stabilize before using HotPacs.

The HotPac rack inside the unit is adjustable to accommodate different sizes and types of HotPacs. The SS-2 unit comes with eight standard HotPacs, the M-2 with twelve, and the M-4 with twenty-four. HotPacs should always be kept submerged in water to prevent burning or scorching. After each treatment, HotPacs should be returned to the hot water in the heating unit to reheat and remain clean and ready for immediate use. HotPacs have a useful life of at least one year under constant daily use. They should be replaced when the filler begins to ooze, the fabric wears out, or they no longer retain heat properly. For extended storage, wet HotPacs can be placed in plastic bags and stored in a freezer.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and efficiency of the Hydrocollator unit.

  1. Water Level: The water level must always be maintained above the HotPacs to protect the heating element, stainless steel, and HotPacs from damage. Water is lost daily due to evaporation, so daily refilling is necessary.
  2. Cleaning: The tank should be drained and cleaned systematically, at minimum intervals of every two weeks. Before cleaning or emptying, the unit must always be unplugged from the power source. The unit can be drained by moving it to a floor drain or by attaching an extension hose to the drain valve located at the bottom rear. The interior of the unit should be cleaned with a low-abrasive bathroom cleaner, ensuring it has low or no chlorine content, and thoroughly rinsed. A strong solution of vinegar and water can be used to dissolve deposits, followed by thorough rinsing.
  3. Rust Prevention: To prevent rusting, several precautions must be observed:
    • Avoid using bleach or cleaners with high chlorine content.
    • Do not use metal items like paper clips, safety pins, staples, or coat hangers in or on the unit.
    • Do not clean the unit with steel wool or a carbon steel brush.
    • Avoid abrasive cleaners that can disturb the finish.
    • Regularly clean and drain the tank to remove deposits, which are concentrations of chlorine that can initiate rusting. Accumulation of deposits on the heating element can also reduce efficiency and increase power consumption.
    • If "hard water" is suspected, characterized by salt deposits, the water may need to be changed more frequently.
    • Do not add certain additives like herbal teas or essential oils, as these can damage the unit's components, including the stainless steel. The unit is designed to heat water and HotPacs only.
  4. HotPac Care: HotPacs can be boiled for cleaning, though this may hasten their deterioration. They can also be scrubbed with soap and water. The simplified method of keeping them clean is continuous immersion in water.
  5. Troubleshooting: Minor performance issues, such as the unit not heating, cloudy water, or packs being too hot or too cool, can often be resolved by checking the breaker, adjusting the thermostat, replacing packs, or cleaning the tank. For more complex problems, qualified personnel should service the equipment.
  6. Replacement Parts: Only factory-authorized replacement parts should be used. HotPacs showing signs of wear or contamination (e.g., from hazardous materials, cleaning agents, bodily fluids, or mold) must be destroyed and replaced.
