Overview

The Chronomite High Capacity Instant-Temp Water Heater (HCH) is a tankless water heating device designed for various applications, offering on-demand hot water. It operates on 480-600V 3-phase power and is available in multiple models with varying wattages and current draws.

Function Description:

The HCH Instant-Temp water heater provides instant hot water by heating water as it flows through a series of ingeniously designed coils housed within an engineered plastic case. A unique power switch automatically applies electrical current to the coils when hot water is requested. A microprocessor maintains a constant output temperature at a pre-selected setting, adjusting power (amperage and voltage) based on varying flow rates. The electrical current is not applied to the heating elements when the heater is below its activation point or not in use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 15-1/4" x 17-1/2" x 6-1/4"
  • Weight: 26 LBS
  • Power Supply: 480V, 3-phase (models available for 480-600V 3-phase)
  • Wattage Range: 20,000 W to 57,600 W
  • Amps per Phase: 24 A to 69 A
  • Circuit Breaker Requirements (3 Pole):
    • Intermittent Duty: 30 A to 70 A
    • Continuous Duty: 30 A to 90 A
  • Voltage: 480V
  • Minimum Operating Pressure: 25 PSI
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 80 PSI
  • Maximum Pressure: 150 PSI (No pressure relief valve needed unless required by local code)
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 140°F
  • Flow Switch Activation (3 Module Heaters):
    • Low Activation (L): 0.35 GPM
    • Standard Activation (S): 1.20 GPM
    • High Activation (H): 2.80 GPM
  • Temperature Rise (at 480V):
    • At 4.00 GPM: 34°F to 98°F (depending on model)
    • At 6.00 GPM: 23°F to 66°F (depending on model)
  • Materials: Rugged steel housing and cover, Celcon plastic element assembly with nichrome coils.
  • Listings: UL, UPC

Usage Features:

  • On-Demand Hot Water: Heats water instantly as it flows, eliminating the need for a storage tank.
  • Temperature Adjustment Potentiometer (L & S Models): Allows users to adjust the factory preset temperature between 70°F and 125°F. Adjustment involves loosening a nut, turning a screw clockwise to increase temperature or counter-clockwise to decrease, then tightening the nut.
  • Fixed Temperature (H Models): Factory preset for 84°F, designed for tepid water use.
  • Flow Activation: The unit activates when the hot water faucet is turned on and the flow rate exceeds the specified activation point (e.g., 0.35 GPM for Low Activation models).
  • Cold Water Mixing: Cold water can be mixed when using a two-handle faucet.
  • Microprocessor Control: Automatically adjusts power to maintain a constant outlet temperature, even with varying flow rates.
  • Deactivation: The unit deactivates when the flow rate drops below the GPM activation point.
  • Flow Controls: High-quality Omni flow controls can be installed to optimize system operation. L-212 (0.5 GPM) for Low Activation models (multi-lavatory) and A-212 (2.0 GPM) for Standard Activation models (multi-fixture). These are chrome-plated brass with male threads (15/16" female and 55/64" male threads). Adapters are available for other thread configurations.

Maintenance Features:

  • Internal User Serviceable Parts: The heater contains parts that can be serviced by the user, though factory guidance or return authorization is recommended for repairs or replacements.
  • High-Limit Thermostat: Each module has a reset button for the high-limit thermostat, accessible after removing the cover and shutting off power.
  • Element Resistance Check: Elements can be checked for resistance using an ohmmeter or multi-meter by taking readings off termination rods with brass nuts on each heater module (expected range: 6 to 30 ohms).
  • Air Purging Procedure: Crucial for preventing element burnout. If water lines are serviced or drained, users must turn off electrical supply, turn on water supply, expel air by cycling downstream faucet 10 times, then turn on electrical power.
  • Periodic Inspection: Supply lines, connections, and the heater itself should be periodically inspected for moisture, corrosion, or other potential problems.
  • Winterization: If stored in a location subject to freezing, the unit must be protected. This involves disconnecting power and inlet/outlet fittings, blowing air through the highest fitting to drain, and installing RV antifreeze. Failure to winterize voids the warranty.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive guide is provided to help diagnose common issues such as flow rate, power LED indicators, low power/voltage, low amperage draw, high-limit thermostat trips, element problems, pipe length effects, and shut-off valve status.
  • Warranty: Exclusive 12-month factory warranty covering defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase, provided the unit is installed according to instructions. Repairs or exchanges are performed at the factory.
