This document describes the functions, usage, and maintenance of a CITIZEN Eco-Drive watch, a solar-powered timepiece that converts light into electrical energy. Unlike conventional watches, it does not rely on a replaceable battery but uses a special rechargeable cell designed to last the life of the watch.
The CITIZEN Eco-Drive watch operates by converting light into electrical energy, which is then stored in a special rechargeable cell. This design eliminates the need for regular battery replacement, making it an environmentally friendly and low-maintenance timepiece.
Insufficient Charge Warning Function: If the watch's charge becomes insufficient, the second hand will change from a one-second interval movement to a two-second interval movement. This serves as a warning that the watch needs recharging. Even in this state, the watch continues to keep accurate time for approximately four days before it will stop completely. Exposing the watch to light will initiate recharging, and the second hand will return to its normal one-second interval movement.
Quick Start Function: If the watch is completely discharged and stops, it will begin to operate again soon after being exposed to light. The time it takes for the watch to start moving may vary depending on the brightness of the light source. When the watch starts moving after being stopped, the second hand will exhibit a "hitch movement" to indicate that the time is incorrect and needs to be reset.
Overcharge Prevention Function: The watch is equipped with an overcharge prevention function, which means you can recharge it without worrying about damaging the special energy storage cell. Once the cell is fully charged, this function automatically activates to prevent further overcharging.
Before Using: Before initial use, or if the watch has stopped, it is crucial to fully charge the watch by exposing it to light. Once fully charged, the watch can run for approximately six months without additional charging. For optimal performance, it is recommended to expose the watch to light daily and ensure it is recharged before it completely stops.
Setting the Time (Three-hand models without calendar display):
Setting the Time and Calendar (Models with calendar display - date and/or weekday):
Charging: The time required for recharging varies based on the watch's design (e.g., dial color) and the light environment. It's important to note that the provided charging times are approximate. For instance, to achieve one day of usage, a watch might need 4 hours of exposure to light in an ordinary office (500 lux) or just 2 minutes in direct summer sunlight (100,000 lux). To fully charge a stopped watch, significantly longer exposure times are needed.
Water-Resistance: CITIZEN Eco-Drive watches come with various levels of water-resistance, indicated on the dial and case back.
Care and Handling During Charging: To maintain optimal performance, regularly expose your watch to light. Be aware that long sleeves can block light, leading to insufficient charging, so additional exposure may be necessary. When not wearing the watch, place it in a bright area. Avoid recharging in high temperatures (above 60°C / 140°F), as this can damage sensitive components. Keep the watch at least 50cm (20 inches) away from incandescent lights, and do not use halogen bulbs for recharging. Never place the watch on a vehicle's dashboard or rear deck, as the heat can cause damage.
About the Rechargeable Cell: The special rechargeable cell in your Eco-Drive watch is designed to last the life of the watch and does not require regular replacement. Only an Authorized Service Center should replace this cell. Using an alternate cell, such as a conventional battery, can lead to overcharging, damage to the movement, or even bursting of the cell, which could cause injury.
Cleaning the Watch:
Operating Environment:
Periodical Inspections: Your watch requires inspection every two to three years to ensure safety and longevity. To maintain water-resistance, the packing needs regular replacement. Other parts should also be inspected and replaced if necessary. Always request genuine CITIZEN parts for replacements. If seawater enters the watch, immediately place it in a box or plastic bag and take it for repair. Otherwise, increased internal pressure can cause parts (crystal, crown, buttons) to come off. If moisture enters the watch or the crystal fogs up and doesn't clear within a day, take it to your dealer or Citizen Service Center immediately to prevent internal corrosion.
