Procedure for setting the primary time on the watch, ensuring synchronization.
This document outlines the features, usage, and maintenance of a multi-hand analog solar-powered watch.
The watch is equipped with a minute repeater function, which uses electronic tones to inform the wearer of the current time (hours and minutes). This function is activated by pressing button (B) for approximately one second while the watch is in time mode and the crown is in the normal position. The electronic tone provides a high-pitch sound for each hour and a combination of high-pitch and low-pitch tones for each 15-minute period, followed by low-pitch tones for the remaining minutes. For example, if the time is 4:48, there will be four high-pitch tones for the hours, three combination tones for 45 minutes, and three low-pitch tones for the remaining 3 minutes. The AM/PM hand helps distinguish between AM and PM when interpreting the hourly tones.
A perpetual calendar is integrated, automatically correcting the date, including leap years, up to February 28, 2100. The sub watch hour hand indicates the year (number of years elapsed from the most recent leap year), while the sub watch minute hand indicates the month. The date & mode hand displays the current date. The year and month can be set by pulling the crown out to Position 1 and pressing button (A). The date can be set by pressing button (B). The date can also be recalled by pressing button (A) for about 2 seconds in time mode.
The watch features a daily alarm (H-AL) that sounds at a set time every day. To set the alarm, the date & mode hand must be moved to the H-AL mode (ON or OFF) by pressing button (C). The sub watch hour and minute hands will then display the previously set alarm time, which can be adjusted using button (A). The alarm can be switched ON or OFF by pressing button (B) in H-AL mode. The alarm tone can be stopped by pressing any button (A, B, or C) while it is sounding, and a monitor function allows checking the alarm tone by pressing button (B) for about 2 seconds in H-AL mode.
A local time (L-TM) function allows setting and displaying the time in another region or foreign country, adjustable in 30-minute units based on the sub watch time. This is accessed by pressing button (C) until the date & mode hand moves to L-TM mode. The local time can then be set using button (A).
Complementing the local time, a local alarm (L-AL) sounds daily at a set time based on the local time mode. Setting this alarm follows a similar procedure to the daily alarm, by moving the date & mode hand to L-AL mode using button (C) and adjusting the alarm time with button (A).
The watch also includes a seconds correction function (0-SET) for synchronizing the main and sub watch seconds with a standard clock or telephone time signal. This is useful for correcting fast or slow running seconds. To use this, press button (C) until the date & mode hand moves to the "0-SET" seconds correction function, then press button (B) in synchronization with a standard clock. Depending on whether the watch is running fast or slow, the hands will adjust accordingly.
A reference position setting warning function is activated if the reference position is not set after an all-reset procedure, indicated by the date & mode hand moving counter-clockwise. Similarly, a time setting warning function is activated if the sub watch time is not aligned with the main watch after setting the main watch time, causing the date & mode hand to advance rapidly clockwise.
The watch is equipped with a photoelectric power generation function, utilizing a solar cell in its face to convert light energy into electrical energy, driving the watch.
Before initial use or after a strong impact, it is crucial to check and set the reference position of each hand to ensure proper function. This involves setting the crown to the normal position, pressing button (C) for about 3 seconds until the date & mode hand moves to the 0-SET position, and verifying that all hands indicate their default positions (date & mode hand at 0-SET, sub watch hour/minute hands at 12:00, AM/PM hand at the top of the AM zone). If any hand is off, an all-reset procedure must be performed by pulling the crown to Position 2, simultaneously pressing buttons (A), (B), and (C) for 2 seconds, and then setting the reference position for the sub watch hour/minute hands and AM/PM hand using button (A).
Setting the main watch time requires pulling the crown out to Position 2 when the second hand reaches 0 seconds, then turning the crown to adjust the hour and minute hands. After setting the main watch time, the sub watch time should be aligned with it by pressing button (A) in the sub watch time setting mode.
The watch incorporates an insufficient charge warning display, where the second hand switches from 1-second to 2-second interval movement when the charge is low. If charging is not performed, the watch will stop after approximately 5 days in this mode. An over charge prevention function automatically interrupts charging once the secondary battery is fully charged, protecting the battery and maintaining timekeeping accuracy.
The watch automatically returns to the time display after a period (e.g., 20 seconds for date recall, 20 seconds for reference position check, 1 minute for alarm/local time modes) if no buttons are pressed. This conserves battery life and simplifies operation.
To ensure optimal performance, the watch should be kept charged at all times. Frequent wearing of long sleeves, especially in winter, can prevent adequate light exposure, leading to insufficient charging. Regular exposure to light, particularly sunlight, is recommended.
Charging precautions are important to prevent damage. The watch should not be charged in high temperatures (above 60°C/140°F) to avoid discoloration, deformation, or malfunction. This includes avoiding direct exposure to incandescent lamps, halogen lamps, or automobile dashboards where temperatures can rise significantly. When using such light sources, maintain a distance of at least 50 cm (20 inches).
The watch is designed with varying levels of water resistance. It is crucial to confirm the specific water resistance level of your watch (indicated on the dial and case) and adhere to the corresponding usage guidelines. For all water-resistant watches, the crown must be pressed in (and tightened if screw-lock type) before exposure to water. Operating the crown or buttons with wet fingers or when the watch is wet should be avoided to prevent water ingress. After use in seawater, the watch should be rinsed with fresh water and wiped dry. If moisture enters the watch or the crystal fogs up and does not clear within a day, immediate repair by a dealer or service center is necessary to prevent corrosion.
Regular cleaning is essential. Dust and dirt between the case and crown can impede crown operation; rotating the crown periodically and brushing it off can help. Accumulated dirt in gaps of the case back or band can cause corrosion and soil clothing, so occasional cleaning is recommended. A soft cloth should be used to wipe off dirt, perspiration, and water from the case and crystal. For leather bands, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Metal, plastic, or rubber watchbands can be cleaned with mild soap and water, using a soft brush for stubborn dirt. If the watch is not water-resistant, it should be taken to a dealer for cleaning. Solvents like thinner or benzine should be avoided as they can damage the finish.
Periodical inspections every two to three years are recommended for safety and longevity, including regular replacement of packing for water resistance and inspection/replacement of other necessary parts. Only genuine Citizen parts should be used for replacements.
For storage, especially for extended periods, the watch should be wiped clean of perspiration, dirt, or moisture and stored in a location free of extreme temperatures and humidity. Storing the watch in a location exposed to light as much as possible is also recommended to maintain its charge.
The secondary battery, while generally not requiring replacement, should be replaced by an authorized service center if it fails to charge properly. If the battery must be removed, it should be kept out of reach of small children to prevent accidental swallowing, and a physician should be consulted immediately if swallowed. After battery replacement, an all-reset and reference position setting procedure must be performed.
