Runner Kit Installation Guide

Overview

The Clam Runner Kit is an accessory designed for Clam X200 and X400 models, enhancing their functionality and durability. This kit primarily consists of wear runners and associated hardware, intended to be installed on the base of the device. The core function of the Runner Kit is to provide a protective and low-friction surface on the underside of the base, which is crucial for improving the ease of movement and protecting the main structure from abrasion and wear, especially when dragging the device over various terrains like ice, snow, or rough ground. By adding these runners, the kit significantly extends the lifespan of the base by absorbing the impact and friction that would otherwise degrade the primary material.

Important Technical Specifications:

The kit includes several components, each with specific part numbers and descriptions:

  • 6 x RUNNER, .50 X 1.50 X 58 LG (Part No. 104926): These are the primary wear strips that form the protective runners. Their dimensions (0.50 inches by 1.50 inches by 58 inches long) indicate substantial coverage and a robust profile, suitable for absorbing significant wear and tear. The quantity of six suggests that multiple strips are used to cover the base effectively, likely arranged in parallel to distribute the load and provide comprehensive protection.
  • 1 x INSTRUCTION, RUNNER KIT, X200/X400 (Part No. 104966): This is the installation manual itself, providing guidance specific to the X200 and X400 models.
  • 1 x KIT, HARDWARE RUNNER (Part No. 101550): This is a complete hardware kit that includes all necessary fasteners for installation.
  • 30 x SCREW, 10-24 X 1" PTHMSSS (Part No. 102516): These are pan head machine screws, 10-24 thread size, 1 inch long, likely made of stainless steel (indicated by "SS" in similar part descriptions, though not explicitly stated for this one, it's common for outdoor equipment). The quantity of 30 suggests a secure fastening method with multiple attachment points per runner.
  • 30 x NUT, 10-24 NYLOCK SS (Part No. 101548): These are 10-24 thread size Nylock nuts, made of stainless steel. Nylock nuts are self-locking nuts that use a nylon insert to prevent loosening due to vibration, which is critical for equipment that might experience movement and stress during use.
  • 30 x WASHER, #10 FENDER SS (Part No. 101549): These are #10 fender washers, made of stainless steel. Fender washers have a larger outer diameter compared to standard washers, providing a wider bearing surface to distribute the load of the fastener over a larger area, which helps prevent pull-through or damage to the base material, especially if the base is made of a softer material like plastic.

The total number of fasteners (30 screws, 30 nuts, 30 washers) corresponds to the six runner strips, implying five fastening points per runner, ensuring a very secure attachment.

Usage Features:

The Runner Kit is designed to enhance the usability of the Clam X200/X400 by:

  • Improved Mobility: The runners create a smoother surface for dragging the device, reducing friction and making it easier to pull across snow, ice, or uneven terrain. This is particularly beneficial for ice fishing shelters or similar portable structures that need to be moved frequently.
  • Enhanced Durability: By providing a sacrificial wear layer, the runners protect the original base of the device from scratches, gouges, and general abrasion, significantly extending its overall lifespan. This is crucial for equipment used in harsh outdoor environments.
  • DIY Installation: The kit is designed for user installation, with clear instructions provided. This allows users to upgrade their existing Clam X200/X400 models without needing professional assistance.

Maintenance Features:

While the Runner Kit itself is a maintenance-enhancing component, its installation and ongoing care involve specific considerations:

  • Installation Process: The installation involves drilling holes through the base using existing holes in the runner strips as guides. This requires a 3/16" or slightly larger drill bit. The process involves positioning the strips, drilling holes, and securing them with screws, Nylock nuts, and fender washers.
  • Pliability for Contouring: A key maintenance tip during installation is the use of a heat gun or hair dryer to make the wear strips more pliable. This is essential for bending the strips to conform to the curved areas of the device's base, ensuring a flush and secure fit. Without this, the strips might be difficult to install correctly and could lead to improper fitment or stress on the base.
  • Preventing Fastener Seizing: Another important maintenance recommendation during installation is to apply a small amount of grease to the threads of the screws. This prevents seizing of the threads, especially with stainless steel fasteners, which can be prone to galling (a form of wear caused by adhesion between sliding surfaces) if not properly lubricated during assembly. This ensures that fasteners can be tightened securely and potentially removed later if necessary for repair or replacement.
  • Replacement of Worn Runners: The runners are designed to be a wear item. Over time, they will degrade from friction. The design allows for individual runner replacement, meaning that if one runner becomes excessively worn or damaged, it can be replaced without needing to replace the entire base or other runners. This modularity simplifies maintenance and reduces long-term costs.
  • Warranty and Support: The product comes with a one-year warranty against manufacturer defects. Clam Outdoors will replace or repair defective parts. To claim warranty, customers must contact Clam's customer service directly, provide an original, dated receipt, and obtain a return authorization. This highlights the importance of keeping purchase records for potential future maintenance or replacement needs. The warranty explicitly excludes damage due to accident, improper installation, modification, misuse, neglect, or use of unauthorized parts, underscoring the importance of following the provided installation and usage guidelines.

In summary, the Clam Runner Kit is a practical and durable upgrade for Clam X200/X400 models, significantly improving their mobility and protecting their base from wear. Its design emphasizes user-friendly installation with specific tips for optimal results and long-term performance, making it a valuable accessory for users who frequently transport their equipment in challenging outdoor conditions.
