Component types How to check its state of wear Comments
Stem and Bar There should be no crack or surface discolouration. Replace once a year.
Frame There should be no crack or surface discolouration.
Fork and shock There should be virtually no play (a slight play is
possible). There should be no oil leak. There should be
no crack or surface discolouration.
Regular maintenance is required. Refer to the manufac-
turers manual for more info.
Wheels The wheel should turn round and straight.
The rim should not be deformed or cracked.
The spokes should have the correct tension.
Wheel quick releases The force required to block the wheel should remain
constant from new.
To be replaced as soon as the efficiency is inadequate.
Rim braking system, levers and arms The force applied to the lever to brake should be the
same as when the bicycle was new. There should be no
abnormal play.
To be replaced as soon as the efficiency is inadequate.
Hydraulic braking system The force applied to the lever to brake should be the
same as when the bicycle was new. There should be no
abnormal play.
The brake hose should not be folded or deformed.
There should be no fluid leak.
Hydraulic brakes require regular maintenance. The brake
fluid should be changed every year.

Bolts, nuts, axles No creaking should be apparent, no oxidation
The bolts should show no signs of deformation.
Don’t forget to think about regularly checking the torque
settings.
