Overview

This document outlines the features, usage, and maintenance of a 14.1" laptop running Windows 10 S. The laptop is designed for general use in non-tropical areas and emphasizes security and performance through its S Mode operating system.

Function Description

The laptop serves as a portable computing device, enabling users to perform various tasks such as browsing the internet, creating documents, watching videos, and running applications. Its core functionality revolves around the Windows 10 S operating system, which is optimized for security and performance by exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store. This ensures a verified and secure computing environment, protecting against phishing and malware. The device includes essential components for a complete user experience, such as a keyboard for typing, a touchpad for cursor control, and a display for visual output. It also integrates a front camera for photos and videos, a microphone for audio input, and speakers for audio playback. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi for internet access and Bluetooth for connecting to external devices.

Usage Features

The laptop offers a user-friendly interface with several features to enhance productivity and convenience.

Power and Basic Operation:

To turn the device on or off, users press and hold the power button for two seconds. A brief press of the power button will put the device into Sleep mode or wake it from Sleep. The power button also provides access to Sleep, Restart, and Shutdown operations via the Power Button menu. Upon startup, users are prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network and log in to their user account. An initial full charge of at least six hours is recommended before first use.

Windows 10 S Start Menu and Applications:

The Start menu displays applications as "magnets" for easy access. Users can pin desired apps and websites to the Start Screen by right-clicking the app icon and selecting "Pin to Start." Similarly, apps can be unpinned by selecting "Unpin from Start." Tiles on the Start Screen can be customized by dragging them to new locations or resizing them by selecting "Resize" from the right-click menu. Downloading new applications is done through the Microsoft Store, which requires a Microsoft account. The Menu bar, located at the bottom of the screen within the Start Menu, provides quick access to various functions:

  • PC: Allows setup, lock, and sign out.
  • Documents: Opens the Documents folder.
  • Pictures: Opens the Pictures folder.
  • Settings: Configures and customizes the device.
  • Power: Initiates Sleep, Shutdown, or Restart.

Search and Notifications:

A Search Bar in the Start Menu allows users to find documents, files, or search the web when connected to the internet. Notifications are displayed in the Action Center, which can be accessed by clicking the Windows Key and the letter A simultaneously. The Action Center also provides quick access to customized settings.

Cortana:

Cortana is a virtual assistant that helps users with various tasks. Users can interact with Cortana by typing questions in the search box or by speaking into the microphone (if enabled). Cortana can be configured to respond to "Hey Cortana" through the Settings Menu. Its capabilities include setting reminders, tracking packages and flights, sending emails and texts, managing calendars and lists, finding facts and files, and opening applications.

Multitasking:

The laptop supports multitasking, allowing users to organize files and documents efficiently. The Task View button (or Alt+Tab) enables switching between or viewing open applications. Users can snap two or more apps side-by-side by dragging an app window to the side of the screen. Multiple desktops can be created for different purposes (e.g., home and work) by selecting Task View > New Desktop.

Action Center Settings:

The Action Center provides quick access to various settings:

  • Bluetooth: Toggles Bluetooth on/off for connecting wireless devices.
  • Network: Connects to Wi-Fi networks.
  • Location: Enables or disables location services.

  • Bluetooth Pairing: To pair a Bluetooth device, users turn on the device, open the Action Center, click and hold "Bluetooth," select "Go To Settings," and follow the on-screen instructions once the laptop detects the device.
  • Printer/Scanner Setup: Printers and scanners on the Wi-Fi network can be set up via "All Settings" in the Action Center > Devices.
  • Second Screen Projection: The laptop can connect to a monitor or TV via HDMI for watching movies, working with multiple apps, or sharing presentations.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the laptop.

General Care:

  • Environmental Considerations: The laptop is best used in non-tropical areas below 6560 feet (2000 meters). Avoid extreme temperatures (too cold or hot), excessive humidity, or dusty environments. Direct sunlight exposure should also be avoided.
  • Physical Protection: Protect the device from impacts, bumps, and falls.
  • Magnetic/Static Environments: Avoid using the device in strong magnetic and static environments as much as possible.
  • Liquid Contact: If the device comes into contact with water or any other liquid, immediately power it off and allow it to dry completely before attempting to turn it on again.
  • Cleaning: Use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Avoid cleaning products containing chemicals, as these can cause corrosion and dampness.

Data Management:

  • Data Backup: Regularly back up important data and files to prevent loss, as the company is not responsible for data loss due to abnormal software/hardware operation or accidents.

System Maintenance:

  • Wi-Fi Management: Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use to extend battery life.
  • VPN Management: Toggle the VPN switch off when not in use to extend battery life.
  • Refreshing/Restarting Device:
    • Refresh Device: To refresh the device, go to Action Center > "All Settings" > "Update and Security" > "Recovery," then choose the refresh option.
    • Restart Device: To restart, go to Action Center > "All Settings" > "Update and Security" > "Recovery," then select "Restart Now."

Security and Software:

  • Windows 10 S Mode: The laptop operates in Windows 10 S Mode, which enhances security by only allowing applications from the Microsoft Store. If users wish to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store, they must switch out of S Mode. This is a one-way process, and users will not be able to revert to S Mode afterward. Backing up all files to an external hard drive before switching OS is recommended.
  • Disassembly: Do not disassemble the device yourself, as this will void the warranty.

Customer Support:

For support, users can email support@dpaudiovideo.zendesk.com to receive a ticket number for their inquiry. Customer service is also available by calling 1-833-909-CORE (1-833-909-2673) Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm PST (excluding major holidays).
