Overview

The provided document is an instruction manual for Corning® Digital Hot Plates, Stirring Hot Plates, Stirrers, and an External Temperature Controller. These devices are designed for laboratory use, specifically for heating and/or stirring solutions.

Function Description:

The Corning Digital Hot Plates, Stirring Hot Plates, and Stirrers are laboratory instruments used for precise temperature control and/or stirring of liquids.

  • Hot Plates (PC-400D, PC-600D): Primarily designed for heating solutions. They feature a ceramic top surface that heats up to a set temperature.
  • Stirrers (PC-410D, PC-610D): Designed for stirring solutions using a magnetic stir bar. They allow users to set a desired stirring speed.
  • Stirring Hot Plates (PC-420D, PC-620D): Combine both heating and stirring functions, allowing simultaneous temperature control and agitation of solutions.
  • External Temperature Controller (Cat. No. 6795PR): An optional accessory that enables precision temperature control of materials directly within vessels, rather than relying solely on the top plate temperature. When connected, it forms a closed-loop control system, using a probe inserted into the solution to regulate heating.

Usage Features:

  • Digital Display: All models feature digital displays for stirring speed (RPM) and heating temperature (°C).
  • Control Knobs: Separate control knobs for stirring speed and heating temperature allow for precise adjustment. Turning the knob counterclockwise to the "OFF" position turns off the respective function.
  • Indicators:
    • Power Indicator: Illuminates when the unit is connected to power.
    • Hot Top Indicator: Illuminates when the top plate temperature exceeds approximately 60°C, warning of a hot surface. It flashes when the heat is off but the surface is still hot and turns off below 60°C.
    • Temperature Probe In-Use Indicator: Illuminates when the external temperature controller is properly connected.
  • Display Feedback:
    • Flashing Display: Indicates that the actual stirring speed or heating temperature is not yet at the set point.
    • Constant Display: Indicates that the actual stirring speed or heating temperature has reached and is maintained at the set point.
  • Adjustable Increments: Stirring speed can be adjusted in increments of 5, 10, 20, or 50 rpm depending on the operating range. Heating temperature can be adjusted in 5°C increments.
  • External Temperature Control (with 6795PR): Allows for direct and precise control of liquid temperature within a vessel by inserting a probe into the solution. This is crucial for applications requiring accurate solution temperature rather than just surface temperature.
  • Safety Features: Microprocessor-controlled system includes built-in error routines to detect unfavorable operating conditions and may shut down the product. Users are advised to develop reaction plans for potential uncontrolled heating scenarios.
  • Operating Conditions: Designed for indoor use, altitudes up to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters), ambient temperatures of 5°C to 40°C, and maximum relative humidity of 80% up to 31°C (decreasing linearly to 50% at 40°C). Requires placement at least 12 inches (30.5 cm) from walls, 48 inches (122 cm) from ceilings, and 12 inches (30.5 cm) from other stirrers.
  • Vessel Compatibility: Vessels used on the hot plate should not be larger than the top plate. Metal vessels are not recommended as they can act as a heat sink and cause abnormal heating conditions.
  • Stir Bar Performance: The system is programmed to minimize decoupling, but high viscosity liquids may require slower speeds. Stir bars may need replacement over time due to weakening magnetic strength. Vessels with thin, flat bottoms are recommended for optimal stirring.

Maintenance Features:

  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect the power cord before moving, cleaning, or performing any maintenance.
  • Power Cord Inspection: Regularly inspect the power cord for damage and replace it with authorized parts if necessary.
  • Ceramic Top Plate:
    • Made of Pyroceram®, which is easy to clean and highly resistant to scratches, corrosion, and chemical attack.
    • Should be kept clean using a nonabrasive cleaner.
    • Inspect for damage (chips, etching, excessive scratching) during cleaning. Discontinue use if damaged and contact Corning for replacement.
    • The ceramic top may break if impacted.
  • General Cleaning:
    • Keep the product dry and clean.
    • Promptly remove minor exterior liquid spills.
    • Clean exterior surfaces with a nonabrasive cleaner.
    • Ensure all cleaned surfaces are dry before reconnecting to power.
    • If liquid or wet solid material enters the product, immediately disconnect power and discontinue use, then contact Corning for instructions.
  • No User-Serviceable Parts: There are no direct user-serviceable components inside the product. For repairs or maintenance issues, contact Corning or an authorized repair facility.
  • Warranty: Two-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship, provided the product is used as intended and according to the manual. Does not cover damage from accident, neglect, misuse, improper service, natural forces, or wear and tear items like motor brushes, fuses, or light bulbs.
  • Equipment Disposal: Products are marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol, indicating they should not be disposed of with domestic waste. Users must follow instructions for reuse and recycling of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) via www.corning.com/weee.
