The Corning® Scholar PC-170 Hot Plate and PC-171 Stirrer are laboratory devices designed for heating and stirring applications. This instruction manual provides comprehensive details on their operation, maintenance, and technical specifications.

Function Description:

The PC-170 Hot Plate is designed for heating various materials, while the PC-171 Stirrer is used for stirring liquids. Both units are intended for indoor use in laboratory settings. The hot plate features an enameled top style, and the stirrer has a plastic top style.

Usage Features:

  • Heating Operation (PC-170 Hot Plate): The unit is operated by turning a dial to align with the desired setting. The hot plate will not heat when the dial is in the "OFF" position. The manual provides a table of approximate temperatures corresponding to different dial settings.
  • Stirring Operation (PC-171 Stirrer): Similar to the hot plate, the stirrer is operated by turning a dial to the desired setting. The stir range is from 100 to 1,600 rpm. The stirrer will not operate when the dial is in the "OFF" position.

  • Inspection Procedure:

    • Inspect the power cord for damage. Do not modify damaged cords or grounded power plugs. Service should be performed by qualified technicians following Corning instructions.
  • Preventive Maintenance:
    • Always disconnect power by unplugging the unit before performing any maintenance.
    • Always use a grounded power outlet.
    • Keep the top surface clean and dry. Use a non-abrasive cleaner. Contact Corning for compatibility questions regarding cleaning agents.
    • Clean spills promptly. If liquid or solid material enters the product, immediately disconnect power, use a non-abrasive cleaner, and discontinue use. Contact Corning for instructions regarding interior spills.
  • Warranty: Corning provides a two-year limited warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in material and workmanship. The warranty is valid only if the product is used for its intended purpose and within the guidelines specified in the instruction manual. It does not cover damage from accidents, neglect, misuse, improper service, natural forces, or defects not related to original material or workmanship. Motor brushes, fuses, light bulbs, batteries, or damage to paint/finish are not covered. Transit damage claims should be filed with the transportation carrier.
  • Technical Support/Service: For questions or service inquiries, customers can contact Corning Customer Service via phone (1.800.492.1110 in the US/Canada, +1.978.442.2200 outside the US) or their local Corning sales office. A Return Authorization (RA) number must be obtained before returning any unit for service. Units should be returned in original or sufficiently packed packaging to prevent damage.
