5.0 Heating Operation and Controls
The Corning® Scholar™ 170 Hot Plate will not heat when the dial setting is
turned to the “OFF” position. To operate the unit turn the dial until the dial
indicator lines up with the desired dial setting. The following table details
approximate temperatures for various dial settings.

NOTE: Temperatures shown are approximate “no load” values. Variables
affecting actual temperature may include environment conditions, dial
setting position, and top loading.
6.0 Stirring Operation and Controls
The Corning Scholar 171 Stirrer will not stir when the dial setting is turned
to the “OFF” position. To operate the unit, turn the dial until the dial indica-
tor lines up with the desired dial setting. The stir range is 100 to 1,600 rpm.
7.0 Inspection Procedure
Look for etching or chipping on top plate. If any of these conditions are
present, discontinue use and contact Corning for additional instructions.
Look for damaged power cord. If the cord is damaged, do not modify the
grounded power plug to avoid shock hazard or any other unit component.
Service should always be done by qualified technicians using Corning
instructions. Contact Corning for additional instructions.

3.0 Operating Conditions
The Corning Scholar is designed to be safe when used under the following
conditions:
Indoor use
Altitude up to 2,000 meters
Temperature of 0°C to 40°C
Maximum relative humidity of 80% for temperatures up to 31°C decreasing
linearly to 50% relative humidity at 40°C.
Position at least 12” from walls, 48” from ceiling, and 12” between hot
plates if using multiple units.
Main supply voltage fluctuations not to exceed ±10% of the nominal voltage.

Pollution Degree 2
4.0 Warnings
DO NOT immerse unit for cleaning.
DO NOT remove or modify ground power plug. Use only properly grounded
outlets to avoid shock hazard.
DO NOT use insulating materials, such as a sand bath, on top of this
product when heating.
USE CAUTION when heating volatile materials, top surface and element
can reach the “Flash Point” temperature of many chemicals.
