Overview

This document is the owner's manual for a Sears Craftsman 16 Gallon Convertible Wet/Dry Vac, Model No. 113.170170, Part No. SP6411. It provides essential information for assembly, operation, maintenance, and repair of the vacuum cleaner.

Function Description:

The Craftsman 16 Gallon Convertible Wet/Dry Vac is designed for household use, capable of both wet and dry vacuuming. Its "Convertible" feature implies it can also function as a blower. The vacuum is equipped with a 16-gallon dust drum, making it suitable for larger clean-up tasks. It features a "Pos-I-Lock" hose system for secure attachment and "Switchable Blowing" capability, allowing the user to easily convert it from suction to blowing mode. This design also contributes to quieter operation during vacuuming as the blowing port is closed. The unit is double-insulated, eliminating the need for a separate grounding system.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 16 Gallons
  • Model Number: 113.170170
  • Insulation: Double-insulated (grounding not required)
  • Filter Type: Paper Pleated Filter (Red Stripe, stock number 9-17816). An optional Craftsman Fine Particle Filter (stock number 9-17916) is available for enhanced filtration, capable of stopping 99.99% of particles as small as .75 micron.
  • Hose: 2-1/2" x 7' hose with "Pos-I-Lock" feature.
  • Power Cord: Polarized plug.
  • Warranty: Full one-year warranty for defects in material or workmanship for household use. 90-day warranty for commercial or rental purposes.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The manual provides detailed instructions for assembling the float/cage, filter, caster/caster foot, and the main vac unit. It emphasizes connecting the power plug only after all assembly steps are complete and safety instructions are understood.
  • Dry Vacuuming: Requires the filter to be in correct position. For very fine dust, more frequent emptying and filter cleaning are necessary. A dry filter is crucial for dry material pickup; a wet filter will clog quickly. A wet filter can be dried by running the vac without the hose attached for about 10 minutes.
  • Wet Vacuuming: For small liquid amounts, the filter can remain in place. For large amounts, it is recommended to remove the filter to prevent saturation and misting in the exhaust. After wet pickup, the filter must be dried to prevent mildew and damage.
  • Float Mechanism: Automatically rises to cut off airflow when the liquid in the drum reaches a predetermined level, indicating the drum is full. The user must turn off and unplug the vac and empty the drum when this occurs. Running the motor with the float in a raised position can damage the vac.
  • Drum Emptying: Instructions are provided for removing the power assembly to dump dry debris. For liquids, a drain is provided in the drum for easy emptying by unscrewing the drain cap. Users are warned not to lift a vac heavy with liquid or debris to prevent back injury or falls.
  • Blowing Feature ("Switchable Blowing"): The hose can be easily removed from the inlet port and inserted into the blowing port on the rear of the vac to convert it into a blower. An optional "Blower Nozzle" (9-16933) can be purchased for increased air movement.
  • Accessory Storage: Extension handles and accessories can be slid onto posts of the caster feet for convenient storage.
  • Mobility: The vac can be moved by using the handles on the sides of the dust drum. Casters can be oiled if noisy.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes reading the manual, wearing safety goggles (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) for all operations and especially when using as a blower, wearing ear protectors in noisy areas or for extended use, and wearing a dust mask for dusty operations. Warnings against vacuuming flammable/combustible liquids, gases, explosive dusts, hot ashes, or toxic materials are highlighted. The vac should not be used as a sprayer, exposed to rain, or left unattended when plugged in. Unplugging before servicing or changing filters is mandatory.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Cleaning: The filter should be cleaned often to maintain peak performance. After cleaning, check for tears or holes and replace if damaged. Dry debris can be removed by slapping the lid or gently tapping the filter against the inside wall of the dust drum. For thorough cleaning, especially with fine dust, water can be run through the filter (wet filter cleaning).
  • Filter Drying: After wet cleaning or wet pickup, the filter must be dried. This can be done by reinstalling it on the vac and running the unit for approximately 10 minutes, allowing clean air to dry it.
  • Filter Cage and Float: These components should never be removed as they are crucial for shutting off airflow when the drum is full of liquids.
  • Exhaust Pad Cleaning: The foam exhaust pad, located behind the exhaust access door, can be removed, cleaned with mild soap and water, dried, and reinstalled.
  • Wet/Dry Vac Exterior Cleaning: Clean the outside with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap.
  • Drum Cleaning: Dump debris, wash thoroughly with warm water and mild soap, then wipe dry.
  • Cord Wrap: The power cord can be wrapped around the handle on the back of the power assembly for storage.
  • Hose Storage: The hose can be locked into the inlet, inserted into the blowing port, or wrapped around the motor cover and secured with the hose lock.
  • Caster Maintenance: A drop of oil can be applied to the roller shaft of noisy casters to quiet them.
  • Repair and Reliability: Repairs and adjustments should only be performed by Sears Service Centers using identical Sears replacement parts, especially for double-insulated units.
