Function Description:
The Sears/Craftsman Wet/Dry Vac is designed for both commercial and household use, capable of vacuuming both wet and dry materials, and also features a "Full Blowing" capability to blow sawdust and other debris. The vacuum operates by creating airflow to pick up materials, which are then collected in a drum. For wet vacuuming, a float mechanism automatically cuts off airflow when the liquid in the drum reaches a predetermined level, preventing damage to the motor. For dry vacuuming, a filter is used to separate dust and debris from the air. The blowing function allows the user to convert the vacuum into a blower by inserting the hose into a dedicated blowing port.
Important Technical Specifications:
The manual specifies two models:
- Model 113.177720: 12 Gallon capacity
- Model 113.177321: 16 Gallon capacity
Both models are "Full Blowing" Wet/Dry Vacs. The electrical specifications for the power cord are provided in a table, indicating a minimum wire size of No. 14 for 0-50 feet and No. 12 for 50-100 feet. The device is a double-insulated wet/dry vac, meaning it has two systems of insulation and does not require grounding.
Usage Features:
- Assembly: The manual details the assembly process, starting with the float/cage assembly, followed by filter assembly, caster/caster foot assembly, and finally the main vac assembly.
- Float/Cage Assembly: The float is placed over the opening in the center of the lid with the "This Side Towards Lid" text facing down. The filter cage tabs are then aligned with slots in the lid's center ring and pushed until they snap into place.
- Filter Assembly: The filter is slid over the filter cage, followed by the filter plate, and secured with a finger-tightened filter nut.
- Caster/Caster Foot Assembly: Caster feet are inserted into the bottom of the drum, and casters are pushed into the caster feet until they swivel easily.
- Vac Assembly: The top assembly is placed on the drum, aligning the vacuum port with the drain cap. Flexible locking tabs secure the lid to the drum. The hose is inserted into the vacuum port, and the utility nozzle is attached to the swivel end of the hose.
- Operation Modes:
- Vacuuming Dry Materials: Requires the filter to be in correct position. For fine sawdust, frequent emptying and filter cleaning are recommended. A wet filter can be dried by running the vac without the hose for 10 minutes.
- Vacuuming Liquids: The filter may be left in place for small amounts of liquid, but should be removed for large amounts to prevent saturation and misting. The float mechanism automatically stops airflow when the drum is full.
- Blowing Feature: The hose is inserted into the blowing port. Optional extension wands and blower nozzles can be attached for specific tasks.
- Convenience Features:
- Accessory Storage: Some models are equipped with caster feet that include rings for storing extension handles and accessories (1-1/4" accessories fit inner ring, 2-1/2" accessories fit outer ring).
- Cord Wrap: The power cord can be wrapped around the motor cover for storage.
- Hose Lock: Some models have a hose lock designed for convenient storage, allowing the hose to be wrapped around the power head.
- Safety Instructions: Emphasizes reading all instructions carefully. Warnings include avoiding operation in areas with flammable gases/vapors or explosive dust, not vacuuming toxic materials, avoiding electrical shock, and storing the vac indoors. Users are advised to unplug the power cord before changing or cleaning the filter or emptying the dust drum. Safety goggles complying with ANSI Z87.1 are required for operation, and ear protectors are recommended for extended use in noisy areas. When using the blowing feature, bystanders should be kept clear of debris.
Maintenance Features:
- Emptying Dust Drum: Involves pulling flexible locking tabs to release the lid, lifting the top assembly, and emptying the drum contents.
- Draining the Drum (Liquids): The vac has a drain cap that can be unscrewed to empty liquids. Alternatively, the top section can be removed, and the contents disposed of.
- Filter Maintenance:
- Removal: Remove the filter nut, filter plate, and lift off the filter.
- Cleaning Dry Filter: Dry debris can be removed by slapping the lid while the vac is off, or by gently tapping the filter against the inside wall of the dust drum after removal. For thorough cleaning, water can be run through it. Cleaning should be done outdoors.
- Cleaning Wet Filter: After removal, run water through the filter from a hose or spigot, ensuring the water pressure is not strong enough to damage it.
- Drying Filter: The filter can be quickly dried by running the vac without the hose assembly for approximately 10 minutes with the filter in place.
- Inspection: Check the filter for tears or small holes and replace immediately if found.
- Reinstallation: The filter must always be reinstalled before dry material pick-up to avoid damage to the blower wheel. The filter cage must not be removed as it prevents fingers from entering the blower wheel.
- Wet/Dry Vac Maintenance: For external cleaning, wipe the outside with a cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap. The drum should be thoroughly washed and wiped dry after emptying debris.
- Repair Parts: The manual includes a detailed repair parts list with part numbers and descriptions for both 12 and 16 Gallon models. It states that service and repair parts are available through Sears Service Centers/Departments.
