Setup
The input MODE switch will “sum” or
combine the right and left channel signals
in the MONO position to improve bass
performance. Select MONO only when the
amp is being used for subwoofers.
The XOVE e R Mode switch sets the typ
of crossover that will be active. 4 channel
models will have two switches, one for each
set of channels.
The HPF(hig ss lter) control will limit the h pa
output below the selected frequency. This
is typically used to protect midrange and hi
frequency speakers from damage and to
allow a smooth transition from a subwoofer.
The LPF(low pass lter) control will limit
output above the selected frequency. This
is used to allow a smooth transition to the
higher frequency speakers.
1. If possible, with the source unit off, conrm that the primary volume control is
is
turned down (counter clockwise).
2. Turn on the source unit (CD, or MP3 player). Re-conrm that the volume
turned down. Make sure the source unit controls; balance, fader, bass and
on LEDtreble are all set to center or “0” adjustment. Make sure that the green
the end of the amplier is illuminated.
3. Play a clean musical selection of which you are very familiar. CD is preferred.
volume Do not use radio signals for level setting. Hit play and start turning the
of the source unit up.
4. Stop increasing the source unit volume when you reach 3/4 (about 75%) or
until you hear speakers begin to slightly start producing distortion.
5. Increase the amplifier level (clockwise) until distortion is heard, then back
the level down (counter clockwise) until the distortion is eliminated. Small
adjustments may need to be made to balance the levels of multiple amplifiers.

Overview

The Crunch amplifier is a car audio component designed to enhance sound quality and power output for various speaker configurations. This quick start installation guide provides essential information for setup, connection, and basic operation.

Setup Features:

  • Input Mode (A): This switch allows users to "sum" or combine right and left channel signals. The "MONO" position is recommended for improved bass performance, specifically when the amplifier is used for subwoofers. The "STEREO" position is for standard two-channel operation.
  • Xover Mode (B): This switch determines the type of crossover that will be active. For 4-channel models, there are two switches, one for each set of channels. Options include "FULL" (full range), "LPF" (low pass filter), and "HPF" (high pass filter).
  • High Pass Adjustment (C): The HPF (high pass filter) control limits output below a selected frequency. This is crucial for protecting midrange and high-frequency speakers from damage and ensuring a smooth transition from a subwoofer. The adjustable range is from 60Hz to 1.2KHz.
  • Low Pass Adjustment (D): The LPF (low pass filter) control limits output above a selected frequency. This is used to achieve a smooth transition to higher frequency speakers. The adjustable range is from 30Hz to 250Hz.
  • Bass Boost (E): The BASS BOOST or BASS EQ control increases the output at 45Hz for more pronounced bass. Users are advised to exercise caution, increasing the level in small amounts until distortion is noticed, then backing off slightly. The boost ranges from 0dB to 9dB.
  • Remote Level Control (F): Some models include a bass remote for convenient adjustment. It is advised not to adjust the bass remote while operating the vehicle to maintain focus on driving.
  • Level Setting (G): This is a critical step to properly adjust the amplifier to match the signal output level of the source unit. It is explicitly stated that this is NOT a volume control. The adjustment range is from 0.2V to 6V.

Common System Setup Configurations:

The manual illustrates several common wiring configurations:

  • 2ch - Full Range: Shows connections for a 2-channel amplifier in full-range mode, with stereo speaker outputs.
  • 4ch - Full Range: Depicts connections for a 4-channel amplifier in full-range mode, with stereo speaker outputs for both sets of channels.
  • 4ch - Mixed Mono: Illustrates a configuration where two channels are used for full-range stereo and the other two are bridged for a mono subwoofer.
  • Mono: Specifically for mono amplifiers, showing connections for a subwoofer, including SUB SONIC (15Hz-55Hz) and LOW PASS (30Hz-250Hz) controls.

Installation Guide:

The installation process emphasizes safety and proper connections for optimal performance.

  1. Disconnect Negative Battery Terminal (1): Before any work, the negative battery terminal must be disconnected and secured to prevent accidental contact.
  2. Run Cables (2): Power, speaker, and RCA cables should be properly routed through the vehicle, avoiding sharp edges or potential interference.
  3. Mount Amplifier (3): The amplifier should be mounted in a location that provides adequate air ventilation and on a secure surface. It should not be mounted upside down.
  4. Chassis Ground (4): The chassis ground connection is critical. A location close to the amplifier should be chosen, paint scraped away, and a nut and bolt used for a secure connection. Existing factory bolts should not be used.
  5. Power Connections (5a, 5b):
    • Smaller amps (5a): Use spade terminals to connect +12V to the battery power cable, REM to the source unit's turn-on wire, and GND to the chassis ground.
    • Larger amps (5b): Strip each cable back approximately 1/2 inch and connect +12V, REM, and GND as described for smaller amps.
  6. Signal Input Low Level RCA (6): Connect RCA cables to the INPUT connectors. The OUTPUT connectors can be used to provide input for a second amplifier.
  7. Signal Input High Level (7): For source units without RCA outputs, use the supplied harness to connect to the source unit's speaker output. This involves connecting the right (+ gray), right (- brown), chassis ground (black), left (- green), and left (+ white) wires directly to the factory speaker wires. For 4-channel rear, specific color codes (orange, pink, black, blue, yellow) are provided.
  8. Speaker Connections (9): Use spade terminals to connect speaker cables to the speaker output connectors. Diagrams are provided for Stereo, Bridged, Monoblock (single woofer), and Monoblock (multiple woofers) configurations.
  9. Positive Battery Connection (10): Connect the power cable to the positive battery terminal. The power cable must be fused within 18 inches of the battery terminal.
  10. Re-connect Negative Battery Terminal (11): After all connections are made, re-connect the negative battery terminal, ensuring it is securely tightened.

Important Considerations and Warnings:

  • Anti-Theft Feature: Many new and factory radios require a reset code when disconnected from battery power. Users must determine if their radio/source unit requires a reset code before unplugging power.
  • Cable Size: It is critical to use the proper power and ground cable size. Recommendations include 1-40A fuse size and 4ga cable for PX-1000.2, 2-30A fuse size and 4ga cable for PX-1000.4, and 2-40A fuse size and 4ga cable for PX-2000.1D. High-quality copper cable is recommended.
  • Level Setting Procedure:
    1. With the source unit off, confirm the primary volume control is turned down.
    2. Turn on the source unit (CD or MP3 player) and re-confirm volume is down.
    3. Ensure source unit controls (balance, fader, bass, treble) are set to center or "0".
    4. Verify the green LED on the amplifier is illuminated.
    5. Play a clean, familiar musical selection (CD preferred, no radio signals).
    6. Gradually turn up the source unit volume until it reaches 3/4 (about 75%) or speakers begin to slightly produce distortion.
    7. Increase the amplifier level (clockwise) until distortion is heard, then back it down (counter-clockwise) until distortion is eliminated. Small adjustments may be needed to balance multiple amplifiers.
  • Alarm/Radio Code: Be prepared to disarm your vehicle's alarm and enter your radio/source unit code after battery disconnection.

This Crunch amplifier is designed for users who want to upgrade their car audio system with powerful and clear sound, offering flexible setup options for various speaker and subwoofer configurations.
