Overview

The CSI Model WSM-03 Continuous Centrifuge is a screen-type centrifuge designed for liquid-solid separation, primarily used as a vertical cuttings dryer. Its core function is to process feed material, separating liquids from solids through centrifugal force and a differential speed mechanism.

Function Description

The centrifuge operates by introducing feed material through a chute, which is then rapidly accelerated to machine speed by a cone cap and flites. This material is directed onto a screen surface where liquid-solid separation begins immediately. The flow rate over the screen is precisely controlled by the speed differential between the cone and the basket, and by the flites, which also agitate or roll the solids to enhance separation. Solids are discharged at the bottom of the screen, falling by gravity into a discharge area where they can be collected by a hopper or conveying system. Liquids pass through the screen and are discharged through effluent openings.

To ensure proper operation and lubrication, the machine incorporates a circulating oil pump, a pressure switch, and a flow switch. These are designed to be wired into the main motor control circuit or an alarm system, guaranteeing continuous lubrication and preventing operation without adequate oil pressure or flow.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: CSI Model WSM-03 Continuous Centrifuge / Vertical Cuttings Dryer
  • Drive Motor: 30 HP main drive motor (explosion-proof option available)
  • Rotation Direction: Clockwise, when looking into the main drive motor shaft end.
  • Oil Lubrication: All bearings (except motor bearings, which are grease lubricated) are oil lubricated by a direct-driven gear pump.
  • Oil Type: Shell Omala E.P. ISO Grade 68 or Shell Omala HD synthetic E.P. ISO Grade 220. Machines with serial numbers higher than 09-207 are shipped with Omala HD synthetic E.P. ISO Grade 220.
  • Oil Change Interval: Every 1600 hours of operation or every three months, whichever comes first. In severe operating conditions (rapid temperature changes, sweating, sludge formation, moist/dusty atmosphere, chemical fumes), oil changes may be needed every one to two months.
  • Oil Pressure: Approximately 15-20 psi when the machine is warm. A low-pressure cut-off switch activates at 3 psi, and the system will not close until 3.5 psi is reached.
  • Oil Flow: A flow switch is installed, cutting off at 10 G.P.M to shut down the machine if flow is insufficient.
  • Oil Filter: 10 Micron absolute cartridge. Should be changed if pressure exceeds 40 psi when the machine is warm.
  • Weight (Water Shield): Approximately 300 pounds.
  • Weight (Complete Gear Unit): Approximately 460 pounds.
  • Screen Openings: Standard 0.020" (other sizes available based on customer requirements).
  • Warranty: One year (365 calendar days or 2,000 operating hours, whichever comes first) against defects in material and workmanship, provided CSI recommendations for operation, maintenance, and authorized parts are followed.

Usage Features

  • Automatic Control: The flow of feed material is automatically controlled for efficient liquid-solid separation.
  • High-Speed Service: Designed for high-speed operation with a focus on vibration-free performance. Each rotating component is individually balanced for complete interchangeability without disturbing the overall assembly balance.
  • Differential Speed: The gear unit provides a differential speed between the cone and basket, crucial for controlling flow rate and agitating solids.
  • External Lubrication System: The oil pump and filter are externally mounted for easy access and maintenance.
  • Safety Interlocks: Pressure and flow switches are integrated into the main motor control circuit to ensure proper lubrication before and during operation, preventing damage from insufficient oil. The main drive motor will not start if the oil pump motor is not running.
  • Unload Operation: The machine should always be started in an unload condition to prevent exceeding motor capacity.
  • Post-Operation Run Time: After feed is cut off, the machine should run for approximately ten minutes to clear any remaining material.
  • Monitoring: Operators should regularly monitor oil pressure, motor amperage, effluent solids content, and vibration levels to ensure proper operation.

Maintenance Features

  • Easy Accessibility: All normal wear parts are easily accessible from the top of the machine, simplifying maintenance procedures.
  • Belt Replacement: Belts can be changed without removing the gear assembly.
  • Gear Assembly Removal: The entire gear assembly can be removed with minimal effort, and it is designed to be replaced as a self-contained unit.
  • Monorail Recommendation: A monorail directly above the machine with sufficient capacity (e.g., to lift the 460-pound gear unit) is recommended to assist with parts removal during maintenance.
  • Feed Chute Design: A swing-away or easily removable feed chute is recommended to facilitate maintenance access.
  • Interchangeable Parts: Individually balanced rotating components allow for complete interchangeability without affecting the overall balance.
  • Wear Parts: Parts such as the screen, flites, and rotor are subject to wear and require regular attention and replacement.
  • Screen Replacement: The machine screen should be changed if large pieces appear on the effluent check screen.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for mechanical problems (vibration, locked rotation, lost differential, motor start issues, oil pump problems) and process symptoms (wet product, poor recovery), detailing causes and cures.
  • Spare Parts Recommendation: A list of minimum and 1-year recommended spare parts is provided, including banded belts, cone caps, gaskets, flite sets, chrome screens/basket assemblies, oil pump/motor/reservoir assemblies, filter elements, and rubber couplings.
  • Service Support: CSI offers field service engineers for initial start-up, training, and ongoing support, with a fee schedule available upon request.
  • Documentation: A complete parts drawing is provided, cross-referenced to a parts list by location numbers, to aid in ordering specific components. When ordering, specify part number, machine serial number, and model number.
