Charcoal Lighting
Instructions
We recommend using a charcoal chimney starter for best
results when trying to light your grill or smoker.
1. Fill your charcoal chimney starter with desired amount of briquettes. For higher
temperatures (around 500-5500 F) fill the chimney starter near the top with
briquettes. For lower temperatures (300-3500 F) fill the chimney starter around
half-way. Adjust as needed for your desired cooking temperature.
2. To get the charcoal started, you can use natural kindling wood, newspaper,
paper shopping bags, or another food-safe fire starter. If using newspaper or
paper bags, crinkle enough pieces in to a loose ball that will eventually fill the
bottom end of the chimney starter (below the shelf where charcoal sits). Place
the pieces of paper on the charcoal grate inside of your grill and fully cover with
the chimney starter.
3. Light the paper or wood in several spots and allow the flames to light the edges
of the briquettes above. Ensure all edges of the coals have turned grey. Add more
paper or wood, if needed, to get the coals lit.
4. Once all of the coals have begun turning a gray ash color, pour them on to the
charcoal grate inside the grill.
5. Use the vents on the bottom and top of the grill to adjust the airflow inside.
Opening the vents wide will increase airflow, resulting in a hotter fire. Close the
vents slightly to decrease airflow and cool the fire. Do not fully close the vents or
fire will go out.
