Overview

The Cuisinart® Stainless Steel Mandoline is a versatile kitchen tool designed to simplify food preparation by providing precise and safe slicing and cutting. Its primary function is to cut and slice various food items with ease, offering a range of cutting options to suit different culinary needs.

Function Description

The mandoline is equipped with a stainless steel cutting runway and a variety of interchangeable blades that allow for different types of cuts. It features a straight edge/crinkle cut blade, as well as fine and thick julienne blades. The straight-edge cut blade is ideal for slicing foods like cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and peppers, capable of achieving paper-thin slices, which works best with firm food items. Softer foods may tear rather than slice when using this blade. The serrated blade is specifically designed for crinkle and waffle cuts. To create a crinkle cut, food is passed over the blade once. For a waffle cut, the blade is set to a thin setting, and after the first pass, the food and food safety holder are rotated 90 degrees for a second pass. The julienne blades are perfect for creating thin strips; the large julienne blade is suitable for items like carrot sticks and french fries, while the smaller julienne blade is great for thin cuts for hash browns or salad toppings.

A key feature of the mandoline is its control knob, which allows for precise adjustment of slice thickness, ranging from 1/8" to 3/8". This dial clicks into place for each thickness setting, ensuring consistent results. The julienne cut adjustments are also integrated into the mandoline body, with the control dial used to select between large or small julienne blades.

Usage Features

The Cuisinart® Mandoline prioritizes user safety and ease of use. It comes with a soft-grip handle for comfortable handling during operation. The design includes nonslip feet to keep the mandoline stable on a secure surface, preventing accidental movement while slicing. For safe food handling, a food guide and holder assembly is provided. This assembly features a built-in spring-load food pusher that lowers food into the cutting position, ensuring that fingers and hands are kept away from the extremely sharp blades. Users are strongly advised to always use the food holder to guide food and never their bare hands to prevent injuries. The prongs and pins on the food holder are sharp, requiring caution when placing or removing food.

The mandoline is designed for easy setup and storage. It has collapsible legs that unfold for use and fold down for compact storage. Before using, the legs should be unfolded and locked into their open position. To adjust the cutting settings, the outer ring of the control dial must be pressed inward to unlock it before rotating to select the desired cut type and thickness. For optimal slicing, it is recommended to move the food back and forth across the cutting blades at a good pace. To prevent food from sticking to the mandoline surface, lightly greasing it with a little cooking oil is suggested. Different foods require varying pressure; softer foods need less pressure, while harder foods like butternut squash require more. It is also easier to cut foods that have a flat bottom, so trimming rounded edges is recommended.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the Cuisinart® Mandoline is straightforward. The device is built with quality stainless steel, designed for low maintenance and a long product life. It is dishwasher safe, though hand-washing is recommended to further prolong its lifespan. Before first use, and after each subsequent use, the mandoline body and all components should be washed in hot water with soap, rinsed, and thoroughly dried. Chemical cleaners or abrasive cleaning pads should not be used, as they can damage the blades or the mandoline surface. The mandoline does not require lubrication.

For safe storage, the control knob should always be set to the "0" position to ensure that the blades are not exposed. The straight blades are removable for sharpening or replacement, with instructions provided in the manual for loosening the four 7mm bolts and nuts that hold them in place. Caution is advised when handling the blades due to their extreme sharpness. The julienne blades are safely stored under the runway when the control dial is set to the SAFE position. The serrated blade stores in its case. Keeping the product and its components away from children is also emphasized as a safety measure.
