Overview

This document describes the De'Longhi BC043X coffee maker, a versatile appliance designed for both espresso and drip coffee preparation.

Function Description:

The De'Longhi BC043X is a dual-function coffee maker capable of preparing both drip coffee and espresso, including cappuccinos and hot milk. For drip coffee, the machine allows users to set the current time and program an automatic start time, ensuring coffee is ready when desired. It features a "1-4" cups button to enhance the flavor of smaller batches by slowly releasing water into the filter basket, saturating the coffee grounds for optimal extraction. The appliance also includes a warming plate to keep drip coffee hot for up to two hours after brewing, with an adjustable warming time setting. For espresso, the machine requires preheating for optimal temperature. It can use either pre-ground coffee or ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) pods, which conform to a standard accepted by leading pod producers for simple and clean espresso preparation. The appliance includes a tamper for pressing pre-ground coffee, crucial for achieving a good espresso with the right froth and flow. The cappuccino maker (which may vary by model, with some featuring an adjustable system) allows for frothing milk to create creamy cappuccinos or hot milk without froth. The adjustable cappuccino system has "CAPPUCCINO" and "HOT MILK" positions to control the frothing process.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 115V~60Hz
  • Power: 1500 W
  • Dimensions (LxDxH): 370 x 305 (or 400) x 325 mm
  • Espresso pump pressure: 15 bar
  • "Espresso" boiler: Stainless steel
  • "Espresso" water tank capacity: 1.2 L
  • "Drip coffee" water tank capacity: 1.4 L
  • Cable length: 1200 mm
  • Weight: 13.89 Lb / 6.3 kg

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: Features separate ON/OFF buttons for espresso and drip coffee, an AUTO button for programmed drip coffee start, HOUR and MIN buttons for time setting, and a "1-4" cups button for drip coffee flavor enhancement. Espresso functions include buttons for espresso/hot water and steam, each with integrated pilot lamps, and an espresso power light.
  • Antichlorine Filter: An antichlorine filter is included to eliminate chlorine taste from the water, improving coffee quality. It should be replaced after 80 cycles or at least every 6 months.
  • First Use: Before initial use, all accessories and internal circuits must be washed. This involves making at least two carafes of drip coffee without grounds and four cappuccinos with water instead of milk.
  • Drip Coffee Preparation: The filter-holder door opens to the right. The carafe has level indicators up to 10 cups (MAX). Water is poured into a dedicated fill compartment. A permanent gold tone filter is provided, or paper filters can be used. Ground coffee is added using the supplied measuring spoon and leveled with the tamper (approximately 7 grams per cup).
  • Espresso Preparation: The appliance requires preheating, indicated by the espresso light. Filters for one or two cups (or ESE pods) are inserted into the filter holder, which is then attached to the machine. Pre-ground coffee is pressed lightly with the tamper. Cups can be warmed before brewing.
  • Cappuccino/Latte Preparation: Espresso is prepared first. Milk is frothed using the cappuccino maker, with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature recommended. The adjustable cappuccino system allows for selecting between "CAPPUCCINO" (for froth) and "HOT MILK" (for hot milk without froth). Steam delivery should not exceed 60 seconds, and milk should not be frothed more than three times consecutively.
  • Hot Water Delivery: Hot water can be dispensed through the cappuccino maker by pressing the espresso/hot water button and turning the steam dial. Hot water delivery should not exceed 60 seconds.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The coffee maker should never be immersed in water. External cleaning requires a soft, damp cloth. The filter holder, filters, drip tray, and water tank should be cleaned regularly. The drip tray is emptied by removing the cup tray grille, disposing of water, and cleaning with a cloth.
  • Espresso Coffee Filter Cleaning: Recommended every 300 coffees or if coffee delivery is slow/non-existent. This involves removing the filter from the filter holder, unscrewing the filter cap, removing the frother and gasket, and thoroughly cleaning all components with hot water and a brush, ensuring holes are not blocked.
  • Boiler Outlet Cleaning: Recommended every 300 coffees. Requires unplugging the machine and ensuring it's not hot. The espresso boiler outlet is removed using a screwdriver, cleaned with a damp cloth and brush, ensuring holes are clear, and then reassembled. Failure to clean as described may invalidate the guarantee.
  • Cappuccino Maker Cleaning: Essential for hygiene after each use. Involves delivering a little steam to clear milk residues, then disassembling the cappuccino maker spout and steam connection nozzle (for adjustable models) or the entire cappuccino maker (for fixed models) for thorough washing with warm water. Ensure all holes are clear, using a pin if necessary.
  • Descaling:
    • Espresso Unit: Recommended every 200 coffees using commercially available De'Longhi descaler. The process involves filling the water tank with a descaler solution, dispensing a portion through the boiler outlet and cappuccino maker, allowing it to act, and repeating until the tank is empty. This is followed by multiple rinses with clean water. Damage due to scale is not covered by warranty unless descaling is performed regularly.
    • Drip Coffee Unit: Recommended every 40 coffees using special commercially available descaling products for drip coffee makers. The process involves diluting descaler in the jug, pouring it into the tank (after removing the antichlorine filter), percolating a cup's worth, letting it sit for 15 minutes, repeating, and then running at least three full tanks of clean water through the machine.
