Overview

This document describes the De'Longhi ECAM20.11X-21.11X - 22.11X Bean to Cup Espresso and Cappuccino Machine, an automatic appliance designed for household use to prepare coffee and heat drinks.

Function Description:

The De'Longhi ECAM20.11X-21.11X - 22.11X is an automatic espresso and cappuccino machine that grinds coffee beans and delivers espresso, long coffee, and steam for milk-based drinks. It features a control panel with various buttons and a selection dial to customize coffee preparation. The machine includes an adjustable coffee mill, allowing users to fine-tune the grind for optimal coffee taste and creaminess. It can prepare one or two cups of espresso or long coffee at a time. The appliance also has a cappuccino maker for frothing milk and a hot water function for heating drinks. An energy-saving mode is available to reduce power consumption.

Usage Features:

The machine is turned on and off using the power button (B2). Upon startup, it performs an automatic preheat and rinse cycle. The coffee taste can be adjusted using the selection dial (B6), which controls the quantity of coffee beans ground, thereby influencing coffee strength. Turning the dial clockwise increases strength, while turning it to MIN or MAX provides extra mild or strong coffee, respectively. The quantity of coffee delivered into the cup (e.g., 40ml for espresso, 120ml for long coffee) can be programmed by pressing and holding the corresponding coffee button (B3 for one cup, B4 for two cups) until the desired level is reached, then pressing the button again to save the setting.

For pre-ground coffee, the selection dial (B6) must be turned anticlockwise to the "pre-ground coffee" position. One level measure of pre-ground coffee is added to the funnel (A6), and then the 1-cup coffee button (B8) or 2-cup coffee button (B9) is pressed. It's important not to add pre-ground coffee when the machine is off or to use more than one level measure to prevent damage or blockages.

The water temperature for coffee can be adjusted through a specific menu accessed by holding down the button (B3) while the machine is off and the main switch is in the 'I' position. Users can select between LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH temperature settings. For hotter coffee, it is recommended to rinse the appliance, warm the cups, and set a hotter coffee temperature.

To make cappuccino, coffee is first prepared in a large cup. Then, milk is frothed using the cappuccino maker (A18). A container with milk (about 100ml per cappuccino) is placed under the cappuccino maker, which is then immersed in the milk. The steam dial (A19) is turned to the 'I' position to deliver steam, frothing the milk. For a richer froth, skimmed or partially skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (around 5°C) is recommended. Steam delivery should not exceed 3 minutes.

The auto-off time can be customized to 15 or 30 minutes, or 1, 2, or 3 hours, by accessing a menu through the button (B3) while the machine is off. The energy-saving mode can be enabled or disabled similarly, by holding down the button (B3) until the ECO light (B1) comes on or flashes.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning is crucial for optimal performance. The drip tray (A17) and condensate tray (A14) should be emptied and cleaned regularly, especially when the water level indicator (A16) protrudes from the cup tray. The coffee grounds container (A13) must be emptied and cleaned when its light (B1) flashes. It's important to empty the grounds container even if it contains few grounds when removing the drip tray to prevent clogging.

The inside of the coffee maker should be checked and cleaned monthly, removing coffee deposits with a sponge and residues with a vacuum cleaner. The water tank (A9) should be cleaned monthly with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid. The coffee spouts (A12) should be cleaned regularly, ensuring the holes are not blocked. The pre-ground coffee funnel (A6) should also be checked monthly for blockages and cleaned if necessary.

The infuser (A11) must be cleaned at least once a month. To do this, the machine must be turned off, the water tank removed, and the infuser door (A10) opened. The infuser is then extracted by pressing two red release buttons and pulling it outwards. It should be soaked in water for about 5 minutes, rinsed under the tap, and coffee residues from its support cleaned. The infuser should be reinserted by sliding it onto the internal support until it clicks into place, ensuring the red buttons snap out.

Descaling is required when the descaling light (B1) flashes. The process involves turning on the appliance, emptying the water tank, pouring De'Longhi descaler (100ml) and water into the tank, and placing a 1.5-liter container under the cappuccino maker. The descaling procedure is initiated by pressing and holding the button (B5) for 5 seconds. The machine then performs a series of rinses and pauses. After about 30 minutes, the water tank will be empty, and the lights will flash, indicating it's time to rinse with clean water. The container, water tank, and filter (if present) are cleaned, and the steam dial is turned to deliver hot water until the tank is empty.

Water hardness can be set to optimize descaling frequency. This involves using a "TOTAL HARDNESS TEST" indicator paper to measure water hardness (levels 1-4). The machine is then programmed by holding the button (B3) for 6 seconds while the machine is off, and then pressing the button (B3) to select the measured hardness level.

The cappuccino maker must be cleaned after each use to prevent milk residue build-up. This involves delivering a little hot water through the cappuccino maker, then removing and washing its parts (tube and steam nozzle) with a sponge and warm water, ensuring the two holes are not blocked.

For all cleaning operations, it is important not to use solvents, abrasive detergents, alcohol, or metal objects, as these can damage the appliance. The machine should be unplugged and allowed to cool before cleaning external parts.
