The De'Longhi ECAM23.42X is a bean-to-cup espresso and cappuccino machine designed for household use. It allows users to prepare espresso coffee and heat drinks, with a focus on ease of use and customizable settings.
Function Description
The machine is a fully automatic bean-to-cup espresso and cappuccino maker. It grinds fresh coffee beans for each preparation, but also has a pre-ground coffee funnel for single servings of pre-ground coffee. The control panel features a display (B1) that guides the user through various operations and settings. Key buttons include the on/off button (B2), a "P" button (B3) for menu access, a rinse cycle button (B4) which also acts as an "ESC" button in the menu, a selection dial (B5) for adjusting coffee quantity or navigating menus, an aroma selection button (B6) for coffee taste, and dedicated buttons for making one (B7) or two (B8) cups of coffee. A steam button (B9) is used for hot milk-based coffees and also serves as an "OK" button in the menu. The cappuccino maker (A19) with its selection ring (A18) and steam/hot water dial (A20) allows for the preparation of frothed milk for cappuccinos or hot milk (not frothed).

Usage Features
- Initial Setup: Requires filling the water tank, placing a container under the cappuccino maker, and turning the steam dial to "I" for an initial water delivery to prime the system. Language selection is also part of the initial setup.
- Turning On/Off: The machine performs an automatic preheat and rinse cycle upon startup, which cannot be interrupted. It's ready for use once this cycle is complete. When turning off after use, it also performs an automatic rinse cycle. The main switch (A8) should only be placed in the "O" position after the machine has been turned off using the button (B2).
- Coffee Preparation:
- Coffee Taste: Users can select from "Extra mild," "Mild," "Standard," "Strong," and "Extra-strong" tastes using the aroma selection button (B6).
- Coffee Quantity: The selection dial (B5) allows choosing quantities for "MY COFFEE" (programmable from 20 to 180 ml), "ESPRESSO" (40 ml), "STANDARD" (60 ml), "LONG" (90 ml), and "EXTRA LONG" (120 ml). "MY COFFEE" quantity can be customized by pressing and holding the 1-cup button (B7) until delivery begins, then pressing it again to stop at the desired level.
- Grinding Adjustment: The grinding adjustment dial (A2) should only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation. Adjusting it clockwise (towards "7") makes the coffee coarser, while anticlockwise (towards "1") makes it finer. This helps correct coffee that is too weak/not creamy or too slow in delivery.
- Pre-ground Coffee: For pre-ground coffee, the "Pre-ground" function must be selected, and one level measure (C2) of pre-ground coffee added to the funnel (A6). Only one cup can be made at a time with pre-ground coffee.
- Cappuccino and Hot Milk:
- Cappuccino: Requires preparing coffee in a large cup, filling a container with milk (approx. 100 ml per cappuccino), positioning the cappuccino maker selection ring (A18) downwards to "CAPPUCCINO," pressing the steam button (B9), and then turning the steam dial (A20) to "I" to froth the milk. Skimmed or partially skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (about 5°C) is recommended for best froth.
- Hot Milk (not frothed): Similar to cappuccino preparation, but with the cappuccino maker selection ring (A18) positioned upwards to "HOT MILK."
- Hot Water: Can be dispensed by turning the steam dial (A20) to "I."
- Menu Settings: Accessible via the "P" button (B3), allowing adjustment of:
- Adjust time: Sets the time displayed on the machine.
- Auto-off: Configures the appliance to turn off after 15 or 30 minutes, or 1, 2, or 3 hours of inactivity.
- Auto-start: Sets a specific time for the appliance to turn on automatically.
- Set temperature: Modifies the water temperature for coffee (high, medium, low).
- Energy saving: Enables or disables energy-saving mode to reduce consumption.
- Setting water hardness: Configures the machine based on local water hardness to optimize descaling frequency.
- Setting the language: Changes the display language.
- Install/Replace/Remove filter: Manages the water softener filter (C4).
- Enable/disable the beep: Turns the machine's audible beep on or off.
- Default values (reset): Resets all menu settings and programmed quantities to factory defaults.
- Statistics function: Displays usage statistics (coffees made, descaling cycles, water delivered, filter replacements).
Maintenance Features
- Regular Cleaning:
- Internal Circuit: Recommended to perform 2-3 rinse cycles or deliver hot water if the appliance has not been used for 3-4 days.
- Coffee Grounds Container (A13): Must be emptied and cleaned when "EMPTY GROUNDS CONTAINER" is displayed. It's crucial to empty it every time the drip tray is removed, even if not full, to prevent clogging.
- Drip Tray (A17) and Condensate Tray (A14): Should be emptied and cleaned regularly to prevent overflow, indicated by the red level indicator (A16).
- Inside of the Coffee Machine: Check monthly for coffee deposits and remove them with a sponge or vacuum cleaner (fig. 25).
- Water Tank (A9): Clean regularly with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid.
- Coffee Spouts (A12): Clean with a sponge or cloth (fig. 26A) and check for blockages, using a toothpick if necessary (fig. 26B).
- Cappuccino Maker (A19): Must be cleaned after each use to prevent milk residue build-up. This involves dispensing hot water, then disassembling the nozzle and cleaning the two holes with a pin (fig. 21).
- Pre-ground Coffee Funnel (A6): Check monthly for blockages and clean with the supplied brush (C5).
- Infuser (A11): Must be cleaned at least once a month. This involves turning off the machine, removing the water tank, opening the infuser door (A10), pressing two release buttons, pulling out the infuser (fig. 28), soaking it in water for 5 minutes, rinsing, and then reinserting it (fig. 29). If difficult to insert, adjust the levers (fig. 30).
- Descaling: The machine displays "DESCALE" when descaling is required. Only De'Longhi descaler (C3) should be used. The process involves emptying the water tank, adding descaler and water, placing a container under the spouts, confirming the solution, and turning the steam dial to "I" to start the automatic descaling program. This is followed by multiple rinsing cycles with fresh water.
- Water Softener Filter (C4): If provided, the filter should be installed and replaced every two months or after three weeks if the machine is unused. The machine needs to be notified when the filter is installed, replaced, or removed through the menu settings.
- General Warnings: Do not use solvents, abrasive detergents, alcohol, or metal objects for cleaning. Components are not dishwasher safe. Surfaces marked with the hot symbol can become hot during use.
