Wrap a piece of string around the tool J 28867/5
and measure the pre-load by pulling the string with
a spring scale. Take the reading while the pinion
gear
is
rotating.
New
8earfrTgsY
Used Bearings:
20-35
Nm
(4.5-7 lb./ft.
Turn freely without play.
PINION BEARING PRELOAD
e. If the reading is not within specifications,
adjust the pre-load by loosening the pinion
nut, remove the pinion gear assembly from
the
case,
and change the thickness of the
adjusting sleeve. Fig. 75
Notice:
Decreasing the thickness of the sleeve between the
secondary gear and the bearing will increase the
pre-load.
f. Repeat the adjustment operation until the
proper reading is obtained.
g.
Loosen the pinion nut and remove the
pinion gear assembly from the half-cases.
2.
Adjust the differential carrier bearing pre-load
as follows:
a. Remove the lock plates securing the
differential adjusting nuts on both of the
half-casings.
b. Unscrew both of the differential carrier
adjusting nuts one complete
turn.
c. Lubricate the differential carrier bearings
with
gear oil and fit the differential carrier
assembly in the half-cases.
d.
Assemble the half-casings and torque
tighten the case bolts
in
the proper
sequence Fig. 79 (see torque
specific-
ations).
e. Tighten the differential carrier adjusting nut
on the opposite side of the
ring
gear until
all play is removed from the carrier
bearings. Use Tool J28866 to turn the
adjusting nut. Fig. 78
Notice:
This
procedure is necessary to offset the
differential carrier in the half-cases. If the
differential carrier is not offset
property,
a binding
condition
will
occur between the
ring
gear and the
pinion gear when the final drive
is
completely
reassembled.
f. Wrap a piece of string around the differ-
ential
earner
housing and measure the Dre-
load
by pulling on the string with a spring
scale.
Take the reading
wnile
the carrier is
rotating.

Used Bearings:
10-30 Nm (2.5-6.5 lb./ft.
Free turning without play.
g.
Tighten either of the differential carrier
adjusting nuts until the proper reading is
obtained.
h. Mark the position of both adjusting nuts
in
relation to the half-casings after the final
setting has been obtained.
i. Remove the case bolts and separate the
half-cases.
