Overview

This document describes the DTS:X firmware update for the Marantz AV8802 and AV8802A receivers, highlighting new features, changes to existing functionalities, and the update procedure.

Function Description:

The DTS:X update introduces advanced object-based audio decoding and upmixing capabilities to the Marantz AV8802 and AV8802A receivers. DTS:X is a next-generation audio codec that allows for a more immersive and flexible sound experience by treating sound as objects that can be precisely placed and moved in a 3D space, rather than being confined to specific channels. This update enhances the receiver's ability to deliver a truly cinematic and enveloping soundstage for both new DTS:X encoded content and existing audio formats.

Important Technical Specifications (as implied by the update):

  • DTS:X Decoding: The core functionality added is the ability to decode DTS:X soundtracks, enabling playback of content mastered with this object-based audio format. This allows for a more dynamic and realistic sound experience, with sounds moving around and above the listener.
  • DTS Neural:X Upmixing: This feature allows the receiver to take non-DTS:X content (including PCM and DTS formats) and upmix it to utilize the full DTS:X speaker configuration. DTS Neural:X intelligently processes stereo or multi-channel audio to create an immersive 3D soundfield, effectively transforming existing audio libraries into a more engaging experience without requiring native DTS:X encoding.
  • Speaker Configuration Flexibility: For units with Auro-3D upgrades, the DTS:X update enhances speaker setup flexibility. After the update, users can utilize a single speaker layout with four height speakers to enjoy all major 3D sound formats: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D. This simplifies the setup process and optimizes the listening experience across different immersive audio standards. The recommended speaker configuration for this unified approach includes:
    • Front (FL/FR)
    • Center (C)
    • Surround (SL/SR)
    • Front Height (FHL/FHR)
    • Rear Height (RHL/RHR)
    • Subwoofer (SW) This configuration ensures comprehensive coverage for object-based and channel-based immersive audio, maximizing the impact of all supported formats.

Usage Features:

  • Free of Charge Update: The DTS:X update is provided free of charge for owners of the AV8802 and AV8802A, making advanced audio technology accessible without additional cost.
  • Impact on Daily Usage: Users should be aware that the update introduces changes that may affect daily usage. Specifically:
    • DTS Neo:X Replacement: The DTS Neo:X upmixing mode will be replaced by DTS Neural:X. This means that any previous settings or preferences related to DTS Neo:X will transition to the new DTS Neural:X functionality, which offers enhanced immersive capabilities.
    • Dolby Surround Mode Limitation: The usage of Dolby Surround mode will be limited to PCM and Dolby content. This is a strategic change to optimize the receiver's processing for different audio formats, ensuring that the most appropriate upmixing or decoding algorithm is applied based on the source material.
  • Updated User Manuals: To assist users with the new features and changes, updated web manuals are available for both the AV8802 and AV8802A with DTS:X. These manuals provide detailed instructions and explanations for navigating the new functionalities and understanding the revised operational aspects of the receiver. Links are provided for easy access to these resources.

Maintenance Features (Firmware Update Process):

The firmware update process is designed to be user-friendly and can be initiated in a couple of ways:

Method 1: Via On-Screen Prompt (Internet Connection Required)

  1. Availability Notification: When the DTS:X firmware update is available, a notification screen will appear on your TV after you turn on the unit and establish an internet connection. This screen will indicate that new firmware is available for your Marantz AVR and highlight the DTS:X feature.
  2. Selection of Update Option: Users are presented with three options on the screen:
    • Update Now: Immediately starts the firmware update process. This is the most direct way to apply the update.
    • Update Later: If selected, a subsequent screen will appear with further options:
      • Remind Me Later: The unit will ask again if you want to update the next time you turn it on, providing a convenient reminder.
      • Update during Standby: The unit's firmware will update the next time you turn it off, allowing for an unattended update process.
    • Ignore: Choosing this option means the firmware of your unit will not be updated. This allows users to defer or decline the update if they prefer.

Method 2: Via Setup Menu (Manual Initiation)

  1. Access Setup Menu: Press the SETUP button on the Remote Control to enter the receiver's main settings menu.
  2. Navigate to Firmware Section: Select "General" from the main menu, then navigate to "Firmware," and finally select "Update."
  3. Initiate Update: Select "Update" to begin the firmware update process. This method provides an alternative for users who wish to manually initiate the update at their convenience, even if the on-screen prompt was previously dismissed.

General Update Considerations:

  • Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is essential for downloading and installing the firmware update.
  • Estimated Time: The on-screen display will show an estimated time for the installation, allowing users to plan accordingly.
  • Power Stability: It is crucial to ensure a stable power supply during the update process to prevent interruptions that could potentially damage the unit.
  • User Awareness: The document emphasizes the importance of being aware of the changes introduced by the update, as they may affect how users interact with their receiver on a daily basis. Reviewing the updated user manuals is highly recommended to fully understand these changes.

This DTS:X update significantly enhances the audio capabilities of the Marantz AV8802 and AV8802A, bringing them to the forefront of immersive home theater technology with improved flexibility and a richer sound experience.
