Overview

This document describes the DEWALT DCD800 Drill and DCD805 Drill/Hammerdrill, along with their associated battery packs and chargers.

Function Description

The DEWALT DCD800 and DCD805 are professional-grade drills/hammerdrills designed for drilling, percussion drilling (DCD805 only), and screwdriving applications. They are battery-operated, utilizing 18-volt Li-Ion battery packs. The tools feature a variable speed trigger switch for precise control, a forward/reverse control button for changing rotation direction and locking the tool, and a torque adjustment collar to set the clutch for various fastening and drilling tasks. The DCD805 model includes a hammer mechanism for drilling into masonry. A dual-range gearing system allows users to select between high torque (speed 1) and low torque (speed 2) settings, enhancing versatility for different applications. The tools are equipped with an Electronic Protection System to safeguard the battery pack from overloading, overheating, or deep discharge.

Usage Features

Battery Pack and Charger: The tools are powered by 18-volt Li-Ion battery packs (e.g., DCB181, DCB182, DCB183, DCB184, DCB185, DCB187, DCB189, DCBP034, DCB546, DCB547, DCB549, DCBP518). Battery packs are inserted into the tool handle by aligning them with the rails and sliding until locked. To remove, the battery release button is pressed, and the pack is pulled out. Chargers are designed for 230V household electrical power and should not be exposed to rain or snow. Charging involves plugging the charger into an outlet and inserting the battery pack. A blinking red light indicates charging, while a continuously lit red light signifies a full charge. Some battery packs include a fuel gauge with three green LED lights to indicate the remaining charge level. The charger also features a Hot/Cold Pack Delay, which suspends charging if the battery is too hot or cold, resuming once an appropriate temperature is reached. The DCB118 charger includes an internal fan for cooling.

Chuck Operation: The tools feature a keyless single sleeve chuck for one-handed operation. To insert a drill bit or accessory, the tool is turned off, the battery pack is removed, and the chuck sleeve is rotated anticlockwise. The accessory is then inserted about 19 mm into the chuck and tightened by rotating the sleeve clockwise until several ratchet clicks are heard, ensuring a secure grip. The chuck should be tightened with one hand while holding the tool with the other hand for maximum tightness.

Drill/Hammerdrill Operation: For drilling, the torque adjustment collar is turned to the drill symbol, and the desired speed/torque range is selected using the gear shifter. For wood, twist bits, spade bits, or hole saws are used, while for metal, high-speed steel twist drill bits or hole saws are recommended, often with a cutting lubricant. For hammerdrilling (DCD805 only), the collar is turned to the hammerdrill symbol, and the high-speed setting is selected. Carbide-tipped or masonry bits should be used. Pressure should be applied in a straight line with the bit, just enough to keep the drill biting without stalling the motor or deflecting the bit. The tool should be held firmly with both hands to control twisting action. If the drill stalls, the trigger should be released immediately, and the bit removed from the work to determine the cause.

Screwdriver Operation: For screwdriving, the torque adjustment collar is set to the desired position, and the appropriate speed/torque range is selected. The lowest torque setting required to seat the fastener at the desired depth should be used. Practice runs on scrap material are recommended to determine the proper clutch collar position.

Worklight: The worklight, located on the foot of the tool, is activated when the trigger switch is depressed and is adjustable via three detent positions: off, on, and spotlight. In the "on" setting, the worklight stays illuminated for up to 20 seconds. In "spotlight" mode, it runs for 20 minutes after the trigger switch is released, flashing twice and dimming two minutes before shutting off.

Belt Hook and Magnetic Bit Holder: A belt hook and magnetic bit holder can be attached to either side of the tool using the provided mounting screw. The belt hook is for hanging the tool from a work belt and should not be used for tethering or suspending objects overhead.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: The power tool is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning and proper tool care are essential for satisfactory performance.

Cleaning: Dirt and dust should be blown out of the main housing with dry air, especially from the air vents. Approved eye protection and a dust mask should be worn during this procedure. Solvents or harsh chemicals should not be used on the non-metallic parts of the tool, as they can weaken the materials. A cloth dampened with water and mild soap is recommended for cleaning. No liquid should enter the tool, and no part of the tool should be immersed in liquid.

Lubrication: The power tool does not require any additional lubrication.

Battery Pack Care: Rechargeable battery packs should be recharged when they fail to produce sufficient power. At the end of their technical life, battery packs should be discarded responsibly. This involves running the battery pack down completely and then removing it from the tool. Li-Ion cells are recyclable and should be taken to a dealer or local recycling station for proper disposal. Chargers and battery packs are not serviceable by the user.

Safety Checks: Before making any adjustments, removing/installing attachments, or storing power tools, the tool should be turned off, and the battery pack disconnected to prevent accidental start-up. The tool, parts, and accessories should be checked for damage that may have occurred during transport. The instruction manual should be thoroughly read and understood prior to operation.
