Overview

The DEWALT 18V XR 16 GA Finish Nailer, models DCN660 and DCN661, is a professional power tool designed for nailing and tacking applications. It is a cordless, battery-operated tool, making it highly portable and convenient for various job sites. The tool is equipped with an 18V Li-Ion battery pack, ensuring reliable power for demanding tasks.

Function Description

The finish nailer operates by driving fasteners (nails) into a workpiece. It features a magazine that holds a strip of nails, which are then fed into the firing mechanism by a nail pusher. The tool's contact trip must be pressed firmly against the workpiece, and the trigger switch actuated, to drive a nail. This two-step actuation helps prevent accidental firing.

The DCN660 model offers two operating modes:

  • Sequential Action Mode: This mode requires the user to first press the contact trip against the workpiece and then pull the trigger to drive a single nail. This mode is ideal for precise fastening and helps prevent unintended double firing.
  • Bump Action Mode: In this mode, the user can continuously drive nails by holding the trigger and bumping the contact trip against the workpiece. This mode is suitable for rapid fastening in applications where speed is a priority.

The DCN661 model operates exclusively in sequential action mode.

Both models feature a depth adjustment wheel, allowing users to control the driving depth of the nails. This ensures that fasteners are driven to the desired depth, whether flush with the surface or slightly countersunk. A depth indicator provides a visual reference for the current setting.

The tool is equipped with worklights located on each side of the nosepiece. These lights illuminate upon activating the trigger or releasing the contact trip, providing visibility to the immediate work surface. The worklights also serve as indicators for low battery and jammed nails.

A trigger lock-off mechanism is integrated into the tool to prevent unintentional firing. This safety feature should be engaged when the tool is not in immediate use or during adjustments.

Usage Features

  • Battery System: The nailer uses DEWALT 18V Li-Ion battery packs (DCB180, DCB181, DCB182, DCB183, DCB184, or DCB185). These battery packs are inserted into the tool's handle and secured with a lock snap. To remove, the battery release button is pressed, and the pack is pulled out.
  • Fuel Gauge (on some battery packs): Certain DEWALT battery packs include a fuel gauge with three green LED lights that indicate the remaining charge level. Pressing and holding the fuel gauge button actuates this feature.
  • Low Battery Indicator: The worklights on the tool blink four times to signal that the battery pack needs recharging, after which the tool automatically shuts down.
  • Belt Hook: A reversible belt hook allows the user to conveniently hang the tool from either side of their belt, enhancing portability and accessibility on the job site.
  • Non-mar Tip: A non-mar tip can be placed over the contact trip to protect delicate wood surfaces from impressions or damage during nailing. When not in use, it can be stored in a dedicated holder on the tool.
  • Loading Fasteners: Nails are loaded into the rear of the magazine. The nail pusher is pulled back, nails are inserted, and the pusher is released to secure them.
  • Unloading Fasteners: To unload, the latch on the nail pusher is squeezed, allowing nails to slide down the magazine past the pusher, and then removed.
  • Jam Clearing: In the event of a nail jam, the tool is equipped with a jam clearing latch that allows for easy access to the nosepiece to remove the jammed fastener. The worklights also indicate a jam.
  • Stall Release Lever: This lever is used to reset the mechanism after a stall, which can occur if the tool is unable to drive a nail fully.
  • Ergonomics: The tool is designed for proper hand positioning, requiring one hand on the main handle for secure grip and control, especially in anticipation of sudden reactions during operation.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: The tool should be kept clean. The nosepiece and magazine can be cleaned with compressed air. It is crucial not to spray or apply lubricants or cleaning solvents inside the tool, as this can negatively impact its performance and lifespan.
  • Battery Charger Care: DEWALT chargers are designed for ease of use. They should be kept clean, and any dirt or grease on the exterior can be removed with a cloth or soft non-metallic brush. Chargers should be unplugged from the AC outlet before cleaning.
  • Battery Pack Storage: For optimal performance and life, battery packs should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, fully charged battery packs are recommended.
  • Regular Checks: Before each operation, users should check that the contact trip and triggering mechanism function properly and that all nuts and bolts are tight. The nail pusher movement should also be free.
  • Service: If the tool or charger is damaged, or if the tool does not operate properly after troubleshooting, it should be taken to an authorized service center for repair. Do not attempt to disassemble the charger or battery pack yourself.
  • Disposal: At the end of its technical life, the battery pack should be run down completely, removed from the tool, and taken to a local recycling station as lithium-ion cells are recyclable. The tool itself should be disposed of separately from normal household waste, in accordance with local regulations for electrical products.
