Overview

The DEWALT Cordless Drill/Driver and Hammerdrill are versatile power tools designed for various drilling and driving applications. These tools are available in 12V, 14.4V, and 18V models, offering different levels of power and performance.

Function Description:

The primary function of these tools is to drill holes and drive fasteners. Models like the DC980, DC983, and DC987 are Heavy Duty XRP™ 1/2" (13mm) Cordless Drill/Drivers, while the DC984, DC985, DC988, and DC989 models are Heavy Duty XRP™ 1/2" (13mm) Cordless Drill/Driver/Hammerdrills, which include a hammer mechanism for drilling into masonry.

The tools feature a variable speed switch (trigger) that allows users to select the optimal speed for a particular application. Squeezing the trigger further increases the speed. Lower speeds are recommended for starting holes without a centerpunch, drilling in metals or plastics, driving screws, drilling ceramics, or any application requiring high torque. Higher speeds are suitable for drilling in wood, wood compositions, and for use with abrasive and polishing accessories. Continuous use in the variable speed range is not recommended as it may damage the switch.

A forward/reverse control button determines the direction of rotation and also serves as a lock-off button. The center position of this button locks the tool in the OFF position.

The torque adjustment collar allows users to set the clutch to deliver a specific torque range, which is useful for driving fasteners. The higher the number on the collar, the higher the torque. Hammerdrill models also feature a hammer symbol on the collar for masonry drilling.

A three-speed gearing feature (Speed 1, 2, and 3) provides greater versatility. Speed 1 offers the highest torque setting, Speed 2 is a middle torque and speed setting, and Speed 3 is the highest speed setting. Gears should only be shifted when the tool is completely stopped.

The tools are equipped with a keyless single sleeve chuck for one-handed operation, allowing for easy insertion and removal of drill bits and other accessories. An automatic spindle lock mechanism facilitates this.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 12.0V, 14.4V, 18.0V (depending on model).
  • Chuck Size: 1/2" (13mm).
  • Maximum Recommended Capacities:
    • Metal Drilling: Speed 1: 1/2", Speed 2: 1/4", Speed 3: 1/4".
    • Wood Flat Boring: Speed 1: 1 1/2", Speed 2: 5/8", Speed 3: 5/8".
    • Masonry Drilling: Speed 2: 1/4", Speed 3: 1/4".
  • Charger Compatibility: Compatible with DEWALT 1 Hour Chargers, 15 Minute Chargers, or Vehicular 12V chargers.
  • Battery Packs: Standard and Extended Run-Time battery packs are available. Extended Run-Time packs deliver 25% more run-time.
  • Charger Input: Standard household electrical power (120 Volts).

Usage Features:

  • Battery Installation/Removal: Align the base of the tool with the notch inside the handle and slide the battery pack firmly until it locks into place. To remove, press the release buttons and pull the pack out.
  • Drilling: Use sharp drill bits appropriate for the material (twist bits, spade bits, power auger bits for wood; high-speed steel twist bits for metal; carbide-tipped bits for masonry). Anchor or clamp the workpiece firmly. Apply consistent, straight pressure. If the drill stalls, release the trigger immediately, remove the bit, and determine the cause. Reduce pressure when breaking through material to minimize stalling. Keep the motor running when pulling the bit out of a drilled hole to prevent jamming.
  • Drilling in Wood: Start with slow speed, then increase to full power with firm pressure. Use low-speed wood bits for larger holes. Back up work likely to splinter with a block of wood.
  • Drilling in Metal: Start with slow speed, then increase to full power with firm pressure. Use a cutting lubricant, except for cast iron and brass. For large holes, a pilot hole is recommended.
  • Drilling in Masonry (Hammerdrill models): Rotate the collar to the hammer symbol. Apply just enough force to prevent bouncing or "rising" off the bit. Drill straight, keeping the bit at a right angle to the work. When drilling deep holes, pull the bit partially out while running to clear debris. Do not pour water into the hole.
  • Screwdriver Operation: Select the desired speed/torque range using the gear shift lever and torque adjustment collar. Insert the fastener accessory into the chuck. Perform practice runs to determine the proper clutch collar position.
  • Side Handle: Available on models DC987, DC988, DC989. It clamps to the front of the gear case and can be rotated 360° for right- or left-hand use. Always hold the drill with both hands and use the side handle if equipped.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Regularly blow dirt and dust out of all air vents with dry air (at least once a week) while wearing safety glasses. Exterior plastic parts can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using solvents.
  • Charger Cleaning: Disconnect the charger from the AC outlet before cleaning. Use a cloth or soft non-metallic brush to remove dirt and grease from the exterior. Do not use water or cleaning solutions.
  • Battery Charging: Battery packs should be charged in DEWALT chargers. Optimal charging temperature is between 65°F and 75°F (18°-24°C). Avoid charging below 40°F (4.5°C) or above 105°F (40.5°C) to prevent damage.
  • Tune-Up™ Mode: Some chargers offer an automatic or manual Tune-Up™ mode to optimize battery pack performance by equalizing individual cells. This mode can take up to 8 hours. Battery packs should be tuned up weekly or after 10 charge/discharge cycles.
  • Charge Indicators: The red light on the charger indicates charging status (blinking for charging, solid for fully charged). Some chargers detect problems like hot/cold packs (long then short flashes), weak battery packs (8 rapid beeps), or problem power lines (two fast blinks followed by a pause).
  • Storage: Store idle tools out of reach of children. When not in use, keep battery packs away from metal objects to prevent short-circuiting. Place the tool on its side on a stable surface to prevent tripping or falling hazards.
  • Repairs: All repairs, maintenance, and adjustments should be performed by qualified service personnel using identical replacement parts.
  • RBRC™ Seal: The nickel-cadmium batteries feature the RBRC™ Seal, indicating that recycling costs have been paid. Users are encouraged to return spent batteries to authorized DEWALT service centers or local retailers for recycling.
