Overview

The DGP-2 and DGP-2-V2 are tungsten electrode grinders designed for precision welding applications. These devices are specifically engineered for the longitudinal grinding of conical or tapered points on tungsten welding electrodes, accommodating diameters from .040” (1.0mm) to 3/16" (4.8mm). Additionally, the DGP-2 models can cut electrodes to precise lengths using a micrometer. The DGP-2-V2 model includes a foam-insulated cabinet, an integrated vacuum system for dust collection, and a flexible spotlight, enhancing its functionality and safety features. The DGP-2 can be upgraded to the DGP-2-V2 configuration.

Function Description:

The primary function of these grinders is to prepare tungsten electrodes for welding by creating precise points and cutting them to length. The right side of the machine features a diamond grinding wheel and assembly, which is dedicated to tungsten electrode grinding. This setup ensures consistent and repeatable points by rotating the grinding surface toward the electrode. The contact area between the diamond grinding wheel and the tungsten electrode is always visible to the operator, allowing for excellent control over the grinding operation. The left side of the grinder is equipped with a general-purpose aluminum oxide wheel, suitable for other shop uses, though it is not recommended for tungsten due to the inferior finish it produces. The grinding assembly supports the electrode in a fixed position relative to the diamond-grinding surface, guiding it through an electrode guide collet that matches the electrode diameter. The electrode is brought into gentle contact with the grinding surface and rotated slowly by hand or using a pin vise.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 1/3 HP, 3450 RPM, 5.0 amps. It operates on 115/230 VAC, 50/60 Hz, or 220 VAC, 50 Hz with an optional step-down transformer.
  • Right Side Wheel: Nickel Plated Diamond Wheel, 100% concentration, 6" diameter, .1535 face, 1.00" bore.
  • Left Side Wheel: Diamond Cutting Wheel, 6" diameter.
  • Weight: DGP-2: 27.2 lbs (12.3 kg); DGP-2-V2: 102 lbs (46.4 kg).
  • Electrode Diameter Range: .040” (1.0mm) to 3/16" (4.8mm).
  • Grinding Times (Recommended for Longevity):
    • .040" (1.0mm): 5-8 seconds
    • 1/16" (1.6mm): 11-15 seconds
    • 3/32" (2.4mm): 15-20 seconds
    • 1/8" (3.2mm): 25-35 seconds
    • 5/32" (4.0mm): 30-40 seconds
    • 3/16" (4.8mm): 55-65 seconds
  • Vacuum System (DGP-2-V2): Integrated for dust collection, addressing concerns about inhaling dust from thoriated tungsten. Features vacuum holes and hoses on each side, with valves to direct suction for maximum efficiency.

Usage Features:

  • Precision Grinding: Designed for longitudinal grinding to produce precise conical or tapered points.
  • Electrode Cutting: Equipped with a micrometer for cutting electrodes to exact lengths.
  • Visibility: The contact point between the diamond grinding wheel and the tungsten electrode is always visible, allowing for precise control.
  • Adjustable Angle: The electrode grinder assembly's angular position can be adjusted to achieve desired included angles for the electrode point using an angle adjustment handle.
  • Point Flat Dresser Block (DGP-F180): Attached at the 12 o'clock position of the right side wheel cover, used to flatten the end of new tungsten electrodes before grinding.
  • Electrode Guide Collets: Available in various diameters to match tungsten electrode sizes, ensuring the electrode is held at the proper angle during grinding. Short collets are available for very steep angles (e.g., 10°) to prevent contact with the grinding wheel.
  • Pin Vises: Provided as an alternative to holding tungsten directly, enhancing safety and ease of rotation.
  • Vacuum System (DGP-2-V2): The integrated vacuum system collects tungsten dust, which is particularly important when grinding 2% Thoriated tungsten, a known radioactive cancer-causing element. Users can direct suction to one side for increased power or use both sides simultaneously.
  • Safety Eyeshields: Clear Plexiglas safety eyeshields are included for both wheels.
  • Mounting: The DGP-2 can be pedestal-mounted or mounted to a solid horizontal surface using appropriate hardware (not provided).

Maintenance Features:

  • Grinding Wheel Wear: After repeated use, a groove may form on the diamond grinding wheel. The contact point should then be adjusted slightly downward to an unused spot on the wheel to extend its life.
  • Vacuum Filters (DGP-2-V2): Replacement vacuum filters are available from the factory, with simple installation instructions.
  • General Maintenance: Keep the grinder clean, ensure all safety guards are in place and working, and check for damaged or binding parts.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: A detailed chart is provided to assist with common issues such as the grinder not starting, excessive vibration, grooved wheels, and motor overheating, along with corrective actions.
  • Bearing Replacement: If the motor is not turning freely, cleaning around the wheels and shaft, followed by bearing replacement, is recommended.
  • Warranty: The DGP-2 and DGP-2-V2 come with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, excluding consumable parts like wheels and damage due to abuse or improper handling.
