Overview

The DiversiTech CVENT-2-EXT Extended Concentric Vent Kit – 2” is designed to simplify the installation of high-efficiency furnaces by providing a single-hole solution for both combustion air intake and exhaust venting. This kit eliminates the need to cut two separate holes, saving time and money during installation. It is intended for use with all condensing gas furnace models and offers an alternative to the standard two-pipe intake/vent system typically shown in basic furnace installation instructions.

Function Description:

The Extended Concentric Vent allows the intake for combustion air and the exhaust vent to pass through a single opening in a standard roof or sidewall. This design streamlines the venting process for Category IV furnaces, which are high-efficiency units requiring sealed combustion and exhaust. The kit includes a concentric "Y" fitting that combines the two air streams (intake and exhaust) into a single terminal, which then passes through a single penetration point. This integrated approach helps maintain the aesthetic integrity of the building and simplifies the sealing process against weather elements.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: CVENT-2-EXT
  • Intake/Vent Nominal Pipe Size: 2 inches
  • Overall Assembled Length (Shipping Dimension): 60 inches. This dimension can be field modified by cutting or extending both the intake and exhaust pipes. The minimum allowable length is 12 inches, and the maximum allowable length for this dimension is 60 inches.
  • Intake Pipe Outside Diameter: 3-1/2 inches
  • Air Inlet Pipe Length: 45-3/4 inches. This dimension will change if the intake/vent pipes are lengthened or shortened.
  • Material Requirements for Extension Pipes: SDR-26 PVC (D2241) is the only material recommended for extending pipes. Schedule 40 PVC or couplings should not be used for extending pipes.
  • Pipe and Fittings: Combustion air and vent pipe fittings must conform to ANSI and ASTM standards D1785, F891, D2665, D2241, D2661, or F628.
  • Pipe Cement and Primer: Must conform to ASTM standards D2564 or D2235.
  • Canadian Requirements: In Canada, all combustion air and vent pipes for this unit must be constructed of CSA or ULC certified Schedule 40 PVC, PVC-DWV, or ABS-DWV pipe and pipe cement.
  • Clearances (Roof Mounting):
    • Minimum 12 inches (18 inches for Canada) clearance above the highest anticipated snow level.
    • Maximum 24 inches above the roof.
  • Clearances (Horizontal Sidewall Mounting):
    • Minimum 12 inches clearance above the highest anticipated snow level or grade.
    • When installing multiple Extended Concentric Vents horizontally, the horizontal distance between the ends of each air intake must be 4 inches or less, or greater than 24 inches, to prevent recirculation of flue gas.
    • Multiple Extended Concentric Vents should not be installed directly above one another unless separated by a 3-foot minimum distance.
    • Securing strap must be field installed to prevent movement to the termination kit in the sidewall.

Usage Features:

  • Simplified Installation: The primary feature is the reduction from two holes to one, significantly simplifying the installation process and reducing labor.
  • Versatile Mounting: Can be mounted vertically through the roof or horizontally through a sidewall, offering flexibility based on building design and local codes.
  • Compatibility: Designed specifically for Category IV condensing gas furnaces, ensuring proper operation and safety for these high-efficiency units.
  • Reduced Piping Length: The Extended Concentric Vent reduces the allowable intake/vent piping length by 5 feet compared to basic furnace installation instructions, which should be considered during system design.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: A single vent termination often looks cleaner and less obtrusive on a building's exterior compared to two separate pipes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: As with any venting system, periodic inspection of the concentric vent kit is recommended to ensure it remains free from obstructions, damage, or leaks.
  • Clearance Maintenance: It is crucial to maintain the specified clearances from snow, grade, and other obstructions to ensure proper airflow and prevent issues like intake pipe freeze-shut due to flue gas recirculation.
  • No Field-Supplied Couplings for Extension: A critical caution is not to use field-supplied couplings to extend pipes. This helps maintain the integrity and safety of the venting system, preventing potential failures or code violations.
  • Check Local Codes: Installers are advised to check local code requirements and acceptability prior to installation, as some local code inspectors may not be familiar with concentric vents. This proactive step helps avoid issues during inspection and ensures compliance.
  • Post-Installation Check: After installation, it is recommended to allow the furnace to run through one complete cycle to verify proper operation and pipe attachment.

Warnings and Cautions:

  • Specific Use: The kit is strictly for Category IV furnaces. Using it for other applications can lead to fire, personal injury, or death.
  • Complete Installation: Do not operate the furnace until the entire installation and assembly of the Extended Concentric Vent and all piping are completed. Failure to do so can result in product damage, improper operation, personal injury, or death.
  • Flue Gas Recirculation: Improper installation, especially regarding clearances and horizontal spacing for multiple vents, can lead to flue gas recirculation. This can cause the intake pipe to freeze shut during cold weather, potentially leading to furnace malfunction.
  • Insulation: Keep the assembly free of insulation during installation to ensure proper operation and prevent fire hazards.
  • Extension Pipes: Only SDR-26 PVC (D2241) may be used for extending pipes. Do not extend pipes with Schedule 40 PVC or couplings.

This product offers a practical and efficient solution for venting high-efficiency furnaces, emphasizing ease of installation and adherence to safety standards.
