Overview

This document provides installation, operation, and parts information for Doheny's Cartridge Filters, specifically Item #s 5166 and 2609. These filters are designed for pool applications, ensuring clean water through efficient filtration.

Function Description:

The Doheny's Cartridge Filter system is designed to remove dirt and particles from pool water. Water flows through a cartridge filter element, which traps impurities. As dirt accumulates, the filter's pressure rises, and flow decreases, indicating the need for cleaning or replacement of the cartridge. The system includes components for water input and output, pressure monitoring, and drainage for maintenance and winterization.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual details two specific models with distinct filtration areas and flow rates:

  • Model 5166:

    • Effective Filtration Area: 150 FT²
    • Design-Flow Rate: 130 GPM (Gallons Per Minute)
    • Maximum Working Pressure: 50 PSI (3.5 BAR)
  • Model 5215:

    • Effective Filtration Area: 200 FT²
    • Design-Flow Rate: 150 GPM
    • Maximum Working Pressure: 50 PSI (3.5 BAR)

Both models share common components such as a Locking Ring, Locking Ring Latch, Drain Plug with Gasket, Gasket, Pressure Gauge, Seal Cover, O-Rings, Body, and a Plug with O-Ring (2 inch). The primary difference lies in the cartridge element itself, with specific part numbers for each model (5022037000 for 5166 and 5022035000 for 5215).

Usage Features:

The filter is designed for ease of installation and operation, though it emphasizes that installation and servicing must be performed by a qualified technician to prevent hazards and maintain warranty validity.

  • Installation:

    • Requires placement on a level concrete slab or firm ground to prevent strain on plumbing.
    • Positioning should allow convenient access to piping connections, multi-port valve (if applicable), and winter drain.
    • The compliance label should face forward for easy identification.
    • If practical, the pump and filter should be placed in the shade to protect from direct sunlight.
    • Plumbing connections typically use 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch NPT (National Pipe Threading) and require plastic adapters and Teflon tape for secure, hand-tightened connections.
    • Includes a filter drain for complete draining and a manual air relief valve to aid in bleeding off unwanted air during startup. An auto air relief valve provides air removal during operation.
    • All electrical connections must comply with local codes and be done by a qualified person.
  • Starting the Filter:

    • Ensure the filter drain is closed, and manual air relief valve is open (turned counter-clockwise).
    • Open suction and return valves. The manual explicitly warns that all suction and discharge valves must be open when starting the system to avoid severe personal injury and/or property damage.
    • The locking ring must be secure (hand-tightened with only slight pressure).
    • Prime and start the pump according to the manufacturer's manual.
    • Air trapped in the system will automatically vent to the pool and out the air relief valve. Close the air relief valve (turn counter-clockwise) once air is vented.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and longevity.

  • Filtering:

    • Filtration begins once flow is steady.
    • The cartridge filter element needs cleaning or replacement when the pressure rises 7-10 PSI above the starting pressure or when flow decreases below the desired rate.
  • Removing/Reinstalling Cartridge Filter Element:

    • Shut off the pump.
    • If the filter is below water level, close valves to prevent backflow.
    • Open the air relief valve (counter-clockwise) until loose.
    • Loosen the drain plug to allow water to drain.
    • Open the locking ring (counter-clockwise) and remove the filter element.
    • Lift out the cartridge filter element for cleaning or replacement.
    • For reinstallation, clean any debris from the filter body, carefully place the cartridge element over the tie rod and into the filter body, ensuring it sits evenly on the collector hub.
    • Tighten the locking ring clockwise (hand-tighten only).
    • Follow the "Starting the Filter" steps.
  • Cleaning Cartridge Filter Element:

    • The cartridge can be cleaned by pressure washing with a garden hose.
    • Specialized attachments like a Filter Flosser Cartridge Cleaner (item #6304) or a Magic Filter Cleaning Wand (item #1734) can be used. The cartridge is easier to clean when dry.
    • Allow the cartridge to fully dry and brush pleated surfaces to remove fine dirt and particles.
    • For stubborn substances like algae, suntan oil, and body oils that form a coating, use Doheny's Cartridge Cleaner solution (item #4848). Follow the precautionary statements and directions on the cleaning solution's label.
    • Having a spare cartridge filter element is recommended to ensure continuous peak efficiency.
  • Winterizing the Filter:

    • The filter should be drained and/or removed from its operating location.
    • Store in a cool, dry place where temperatures are not expected to fall below freezing.
    • Remove and clean the cartridge filter element as per the cleaning instructions.
    • Reinstall the cartridge filter element in the filter tank.
    • Tighten the locking ring clockwise by hand.

The manual stresses the importance of following all instructions to ensure operating safety and to prevent property damage, serious injury, or death. It also warns against unauthorized modifications, which will void the warranty. The "NOTICE" label in the manual indicates special instructions that are important but not related to hazards.
