Overview

The Doremi MB-4K is a rack-mounted digital cinema server component designed to decompress and transmit 4K composition components from a Doremi DCP-2000 Digital Cinema Server to any 4K projector. It also handles subtitle rendering and overlay, requiring the MB-4K and DCP-2000 to be on the same network, with the DCP-2000 configured to send subtitles to the MB-4K's IP address. The unit's dimensions are 1RU.

Usage Features:

Operating System and User Access:

The MB-4K Cine runs on a Linux-based operating system with predefined users:

  • root user
  • admin user (password: 1234)
  • manager user (password: password)
  • doremi user (password: doremi)

Connecting via Ethernet with SSH:

  • Connect as the admin user using ssh -l admin <IP_ADDRESS>.
  • The default IP address is 10.10.1.26.

Changing the IP Address:

  • Connect as admin via SSH or RS232 serial port (using an application like HyperTerminal).
  • Execute /doremi/sbin/adminconf.out to launch a GUI-like application for setting the IP address.

Configurations:

Boot Configuration Files:

  • Configuration files in /doremi/etc/beluga are text files that set the unit's configuration during boot. Changes take effect after a reboot.
  • To change or create a configuration file, connect via SSH or RS232 and run beluga_conf with the file name and value: /doremi/bin/beluga_conf configuration_file_name value.
  • Configuration file names are case sensitive.
  • This method is used since software version 0.1.2-8.

Manual Configuration:

  • Configurations can be set manually at any time and take effect immediately, but are lost after a reboot.
  • Most output configurations are set by manipulating bits in register 0x00.
  • To change a setting, connect via SSH or RS232 and run /doremi/sbin/beluga_app.
  • Example: Read register 0x00 (r 00), modify a bit (e.g., change bit 3 (0x08) from 0 to 1 by writing w 00 18), then read again to confirm.

Output Modes:

2K All Outputs:

  • Default: 4K image (4096x2160) split into four 2K (2048x1080) quadrants on outputs 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • If a 2K video is input, it is up-scaled to 4K.
  • Can be configured to output only the 2K image on all outputs.
  • Configuration file: 2K_allOutput in /doremi/etc/beluga.
    • 0: for 4K output
    • 1: for 2K output on output 1 only.
  • Manual configuration bit: bit 2 (0x04) in register 0x00 (0 for 4K, 1 for 2K).

2K Output:

  • Default: 4K image (4096x2160) split into four 2K (2048x1080) quadrants.
  • Can be configured to output only the 2K image on output 1, discarding other outputs.
  • Configuration file: 2K_output in /doremi/etc/beluga.
  • Manual configuration bit: bit 3 (0x08) in register 0x00 (0 for 4K, 1 for 2K).

3D/48fps Output:

  • The MB-4K outputs a 24fps signal.
  • Automatically enters 3D/48fps mode when receiving a single link 4:2:2 10-bit YCxCz video on input A. Only input A is considered in this mode.
  • Output modes (firmware MB 0.01k and later):
    • Default: 4:2:2 10-bit YCxCz single link output at 24fps on each output A (copied to output B).
    • 4:4:4 12-bit XYZ dual link at 24fps on output A and B combined.
  • Configuration file: 3D_444_output in /doremi/etc/beluga.
    • 0: 3D 4:2:2 10-bit YCxCz outputs
    • 1: 3D 4:4:4 12-bit XYZ outputs
  • Manual configuration bit: bit 4 (0x10) of register 0x00 (1 for 4:4:4 XYZ, 0 for 4:2:2 YCxCz).
  • Note 1: Until firmware MB 0.01j (included), only 4:4:4 12-bit XYZ output mode was supported.
  • Note 2: In 2D (24fps) mode, output is always 4:4:4 12-bit XYZ dual link.
  • Note 3: To support 4K 3D or 4K 48fps output, two MB-4K units are required in parallel.
  • Starting with firmware MB 0.01k, the MB-4K auto-detects which input (A or B) is the main link (link A) of the Dual Link HD-SDI input and which is the second link (link B).
  • When receiving 3D/48fps single link 4:2:2 10-bit YCxCz video, only input A is considered.
  • This allows using the same connections for both 2D (24fps) and 3D (48fps) configurations when using two MB-4K units for 3D (48fps) playback.
  • Note: On versions up to MB 0.1j included, the main link (link A) is always input A.

MB-4K Macros:

The unit can be configured from a DCP-2000 by sending Macros during a ShowPlayList, similar to manual configuration.

  • SET_MB_ALL2K: Sets the "2K All Outputs" mode.
  • SET_MB_4K: Resets "2K All Outputs" and "2K Output" modes to 4K output.
  • SET_MB_2K: Sets the "2K Output" mode.
  • SET_3D_444: Sets the 3D 4:4:4 12-bit output mode.
  • SET_3D_422: Sets the 3D 4:2:2 10-bit output mode.
  • SET_OFFSET : Sets horizontal (x) and vertical (y) offsets for generated subtitles. This is useful in 3D setups to adjust subtitle depth.

Maintenance Features:

Updating Firmware and Software:

  • Copy the update package via FTP to the /doremi/etc/rc.once folder using the admin user (default FTP directory is /doremi).
  • Reboot the unit (via SSH or RS232 serial port). The unit will update during reboot.
  • Note 1: Initial firmware (until MB 0.01i) requires a video signal to be fed to the HD-SDI Input for updates to work. Ensure video from the DCP-2000 is fed during an update.
  • Note 2: Only perform one update at a time. If both firmware and software need updating, do one, wait for reboot, then do the second. Performing both at once may lead to improper software updates.
  • Note 3 (Downgrading): Firmware can be downgraded. Software downgrading is only safely supported within the same version branch (e.g., 0.1.1-x to another 0.1.1-x). Downgrading across different branches (e.g., 0.1.1-x to 0.1.0-x) is not supported and may cause unexpected results.

Report Generation:

  • The unit generates log files. In case of an issue, a report can be generated containing log files and current unit state information for technical support.
  • To generate a report, connect as admin via SSH or RS232 and execute /doremi/sbin/report.sh.
  • This creates a file named drmreport_yyyy-mm-dd.tgz in /doremi/tmp (e.g., drmreport_2007-08-16.tgz).
  • Send this file to technical support when contacting them.
