Overview

This document serves as the user manual for Draper hydraulic presses, specifically the 10-tonne Hydraulic Bench Press and the 10, 20 & 30-tonne Hydraulic Floor Presses. It provides essential information for the safe and effective use, assembly, operation, and maintenance of these products.

Function Description

The Draper hydraulic presses are designed to apply significant force for various pressing applications. The core function involves a hydraulic pump unit that, through differential pistons, applies pressure to a ram. This ram then extends to press a workpiece against a table. These presses are suitable for tasks requiring high force, such as bending, straightening, pressing bearings, and other general workshop applications. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper setup and centering of the workpiece to ensure safe and effective operation.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual details the specifications for each model:

10 tonne Hydraulic Bench Press (Stock No. 10582, Part No. HBP/10B):

  • Capacity: 10 tonne
  • Ramstroke: 190mm
  • Max. height (ram to table) approx.: 310mm
  • Min. height (ram to table) approx.: 140mm
  • Table aperture: 110mm
  • Working table width: 380mm
  • Overall height: 1020mm
  • Weight: 44kg

10 tonne Hydraulic Floor Press (Stock No. 10583, Part No. HFP/10B):

  • Capacity: 10 tonne
  • Ramstroke: 190mm
  • Max. height (ram to table) approx.: 985mm
  • Min. height (ram to table) approx.: 80mm
  • Table aperture approx.: 87mm
  • Working table width approx.: 395mm
  • Overall height approx.: 1660mm
  • Weight approx.: 59kg

20 tonne Hydraulic Floor Press (Stock No. 10598, Part No. HFP/20B):

  • Capacity: 20 tonne

  • Working table width approx.: 460mm
  • Overall height approx.: 1825mm
  • Weight approx.: 124kg

All models feature a ram unit, a hydraulic pump unit, a pressure gauge, and adjustable table plates. The floor presses include support feet and uprights for stability, while the bench press is designed for tabletop use.

Usage Features

The presses are designed for ease of assembly and operation, though the manual stresses that assembly of the heavier floor presses requires at least two persons due to the size and weight of components. Key usage features include:

  • Adjustable Table: The working table can be adjusted to different heights using locating pins, allowing for versatility with various workpiece sizes. The manual advises angling the table between the frame uprights to ensure equal distance from either side.
  • Hydraulic Pump Unit: The pump unit is operated by a pump lever. To initiate pressure, the release valve must be firmly closed. To release pressure and retract the ram, the release valve is opened by turning it anti-clockwise.
  • Pressure Gauge: A pressure gauge is fitted to monitor the force being applied by the ram, ensuring operations stay within the press's capacity and preventing overloading.
  • Safety Considerations: The manual highlights several safety instructions, including never exceeding the maximum load capacity, avoiding over-extending the ram, ensuring the workpiece is centrally positioned, and keeping hands away from moving parts. It also recommends wearing safety goggles and reading the instruction manual thoroughly before use.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the hydraulic presses. The manual outlines the following maintenance procedures:

  • Storage: When not in use, the pump unit should be stored with the release valve open and the ram fully retracted to prevent pressure buildup and potential damage.
  • Oil Level Check: The hydraulic oil level should be checked periodically. The pump unit should be placed in an upright position, and the dipstick removed to indicate the oil level. Hydraulic oil should be added until it reaches the full mark on the stem. The presses are factory-filled with high-grade hydraulic oil, and only approved oil (e.g., Shell Telus 22) should be used for top-ups or refills.
  • Oil Replacement: After extensive use, the hydraulic oil supply should be replaced. To drain, the dipstick should be removed, and the release valve opened. Care must be taken to prevent dirt from entering the system during this process. The system should then be refilled with approved hydraulic oil.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided for common issues such as the pump unit not working, not producing pressure, feeling unsteady under load, or not lowering completely. Remedies include bleeding the pump unit, replacing worn seals, checking and topping up oil levels, and replacing the pump cup seal.
  • General Care: Keeping the equipment away from heat or fire is advised to prevent damage or weakening. Ensuring the hose is not kinked and has adequate clearance is also important to avoid damage.

The manual emphasizes that all fixings should be fully tightened once assembly is complete to ensure the press frame is square and stable. It also advises against attempting repairs or alterations by unauthorized personnel, as this could void the guarantee and compromise safety.
