Overview

This document is an installation and operation manual for the 42DREAM FIRE PIT Outdoor Decorative Gas Appliance, manufactured by DreamCast Design and Production Ltd. It provides comprehensive instructions and warnings for the safe and proper use, installation, and maintenance of the fire pit burner.

Function Description:

The 42DREAM FIRE PIT is an outdoor decorative gas appliance designed to provide an aesthetic flame for outdoor spaces. It operates on either natural gas or propane, offering flexibility in fuel source. The appliance is intended for decorative purposes and is not to be used for cooking food or burning solid fuels or other objects. It features a burner assembly, a steel pan, and a concrete rim, with options for decorative topping media such as lava rock, crushed glass, or river stones. The unit is designed for outdoor use only and includes safety features and warnings to prevent hazards such as gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and burns.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Standards: Certified to CSA 2.41-2014 and ANSI Z21.97-2014 for use in USA & Canada.
  • Fuel Type: Natural Gas or Propane.
  • Maximum Supply Pressure:
    • Natural Gas: 10 IN. W.C./2.47 KPa
    • Propane: 13 in. w.c/3.24 KPa
  • Max Input BTU/HR: 65,000 for both Natural Gas and Propane.
  • Minimum Clearances to Combustible Materials:
    • Above: 84 inches
    • Side: 24 inches
    • Below: 0 inches
  • LP Gas Cylinder Requirements: Must use a 20 lb (9.1 kg) LP gas cylinder with a Type 1 valve, constructed and marked in accordance with US Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) Specifications or CAN/CSA-B339. It must be provided with a listed overfilling prevention device and a cylinder connection device compatible with the appliance. The cylinder must include a collar to protect the cylinder valve and be kept a minimum of 4.5 feet from the appliance. An approved LP cylinder retention device is required to prevent tipping.
  • Gas Line Connection: Requires new black iron or steel pipe, or internally tinned copper tubing (where permitted). Pipe diameter of 1/2" or greater is recommended to ensure proper gas volume.
  • Components: Burner Assembly, SS Flex Line (24" and 12"/24"), T-Valve, Steel Pan, Concrete Rim, Body, Chrome Flange, Chrome Key, ABS Ring, 1/2" MIP x 3/8" Flare fittings, 3/8" FIP x 3/8" Flare fittings, 2" Nipple.
  • Ventilation for LP Enclosures: If an enclosure is built for an LP gas cylinder, it must be ventilated by openings at both upper and lower levels. At least two ventilation openings must be provided in the sidewalls, located within 5 inches of the top, equally sized, spaced at a minimum of 90 degrees, and unobstructed, with a total free area of not less than 1 in²Clb (14.2 cm²Ckg) of stored fuel capacity. Floor-level ventilation openings must have a total free area of not less than 1/2in²Clb (7.1 cm²Ckg) of stored fuel capacity, with the bottom of openings 1 inch or less from the floor and the upper edge no more than 5 inches above the floor. All openings must permit the entrance of a 1/8 inch diameter rod. The enclosure must isolate the cylinder from the burner compartment, providing shielding from radiation, a flame barrier, and protection from foreign material. A minimum clearance of 2 inches (50.8 mm) between the floor of the LP-gas cylinder enclosure and the ground is required.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The fire pit has an open base allowing for gas or propane line entry, ensuring the gas line is located within this area to avoid compromising the unit's final position. Gas risers should be kept as low to grade as possible, no higher than 6 inches at their highest points.
  • Manual Lighting: The appliance must be lit by hand. Users are instructed to place a burning match on top of the burner (without holding the match in hand) before slowly turning on the gas valve.
  • Gas Leak Detection: Users are advised to smell for gas around the appliance and near the floor before lighting. A mixture of liquid soap and water should be applied to all joints to check for leaks; bubbles indicate a leak. An open flame must never be used to check for gas leaks.
  • Purging Air: During initial lighting, a small amount of air in the gas lines will need to be purged, which may take a few minutes for the burner to light.
  • Flame Pattern: Periodic visual checks of the burner flame are recommended to ensure it is steady and not lifting or floating.
  • LP Tank Freezing: If an LP-Gas outdoor fire pit is used continuously for several hours, the flame size may decrease due to the propane tank freezing up. Users are advised to turn off the control and tank valves, wait a couple of hours, or switch propane tanks.
  • Decorative Media: The fire pit can be topped with decorative media such as river stones, crushed glass, or lava rock, which should be evenly distributed over the burner pan, covering the burner ring and level with the top rim of the pan. MQ Stones require a lava rock base.
  • Safety Warnings: Numerous warnings are provided regarding carbon monoxide hazard, flammable vapors and liquids, high surface temperatures, proper installation and maintenance, and not burning solid fuels or cooking. Children and adults should be alerted to high surface temperatures and stay away to avoid burns.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: The appliance should be inspected before each use and at least once annually by a qualified service person.
  • Cleaning: More frequent cleaning may be required. The control compartment, burners, and circulating air passageways must be kept clean.
  • Concrete Maintenance: Concrete fire pits are protected from rain and snow, but users are advised to maintain the original finish. Concrete will react to its environment and naturally weather and acquire a patina over time. All fire pits are sealed with a densifying topical sealer that provides some resistance to water and staining. This does not mean the concrete is water or stain proof. Concrete can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution; abrasive or strong chemicals should not be used.
  • Burner Maintenance: The burner should be removed annually, and the media examined. The burner should be cleaned by vacuuming or brushing, ensuring air openings are free of obstructions. Any lint or foreign material around the burner should be removed with a brush or vacuum cleaner. The burner must be replaced if it is damaged.
  • Hose Inspection: Periodically check the hose connecting the LP-gas cylinder to ensure it is not damaged.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A detailed troubleshooting section helps diagnose and remedy common issues such as smoking/sooting, noisy burner, gas odor, unwanted odors, delayed ignition, and low flame.
  • Replacement Parts: All replacement parts can be sourced through Dreamcast Design and Production.
