NON-PORTABLE USE:
The BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver is designed to extend the life of portable oxygen
supplies when away from the primary source. While the BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver
may be used with stationary oxygen sources, the unit should be used only while awake
and reasonably attentive.
The BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver is not intended for use while asleep because, in the
unlikely event of operational malfunction or dislodging of the cannula, the user could be
unaware and not make the necessary corrections.

Overview

The BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver is a device designed to extend the life of portable oxygen supplies, primarily for use when away from a primary oxygen source. While it can be used with stationary oxygen sources, its intended use is for awake and reasonably attentive individuals. It is not recommended for use during sleep due to the risk of the user being unaware of operational malfunctions or cannula dislodgement.

Function Description:

The BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver delivers oxygen in pulses, with the amount of oxygen per pulse determined by the selected setting. This pulsed delivery system is designed to achieve adequate oxygen saturation by delivering oxygen at precise times within the breathing cycle. A distinct sound may be heard each time the unit delivers an oxygen pulse. The device integrates an oxygen pressure gauge to monitor the cylinder pressure, ensuring it remains within the operating range.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual does not explicitly list technical specifications such as flow rates, pulse volumes, or battery life (if applicable, though it appears to be a mechanical conserver). However, it highlights the importance of the CGA 870 seal washer for proper installation and leak prevention. The device features a selector switch for adjusting the oxygen delivery setting and an oxygen supply outlet for connecting a nasal cannula.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:

    • Cylinder Attachment: The conserver attaches to an oxygen cylinder via a cylinder adjustment handle. The process involves loosening the handle, lowering the conserver over the cylinder post holes, aligning the pins and seal washer with the corresponding holes on the cylinder neck, and then hand-tightening the adjustment handle. It is crucial not to use tools for tightening to prevent damage.
    • Cannula Connection: A nasal cannula is attached to the oxygen supply outlet.
  • Operation:

    • Pre-Operation Check: Before opening the cylinder valve, ensure the selector switch is in the "OFF" position.
    • Cylinder Valve Operation: Open the oxygen cylinder valve slowly and completely to prevent rapid oxygen recompression and fire. The pressure gauge should move slowly as it indicates the cylinder pressure.
    • Leak Detection: After installation and opening the cylinder valve, listen for leaks. If a leak is detected, the cylinder valve should be closed, the CGA 870 seal checked, and the unit re-installed. If leaks persist, the equipment should not be used, and Drive DeVilbiss should be contacted.
    • Pressure Verification: Check the oxygen pressure gauge to confirm that the cylinder pressure is within the operating range.
    • Setting Selection: Select the appropriate oxygen delivery setting using the selector switch.
    • Cannula Placement: Place the nasal cannula prongs into the nostrils and begin breathing. The device will then start delivering oxygen.
    • Shut Down: When finished, close the oxygen supply cylinder valve. Continue breathing through the nasal cannula until no further oxygen is detected and the gauge reads "empty." Remove the nasal cannula and turn the selector switch to the "OFF" position.
  • Safety Features:

    • The device includes an oxygen pressure gauge with a rubber guard for protection.
    • Cylinder alignment pins ensure correct installation.
    • The instruction to open the cylinder valve slowly is a critical safety measure against rapid oxygen recompression and fire.
    • The warning against using tools to tighten the cylinder adjustment handle prevents potential damage to the unit.

Maintenance Features:

  • Storage: When not in use, the BONSAI® VELOCITY conserver should be stored in a clean, dry location.
  • Leak Troubleshooting: The manual provides a clear procedure for troubleshooting leaks, emphasizing checking the CGA 870 seal and contacting customer support if leaks persist.
  • General Care: While not explicitly detailed as "maintenance," the instructions imply that proper handling during installation (e.g., hand-tightening only) is crucial for the device's longevity and proper function. The manual does not specify routine cleaning procedures or part replacement schedules.
