CAUTION:
Stability - Wheelchair is designed to be safe and stable as long
as center of gravity is maintained while going about normal
activities. Care must be taken while performing activities that
shift your center of gravity in the chair. Never reach so far that
require you to shift in the seat or bend over out of the chair.
When you have to reach for objects that require you to lean,
be certain front casters are pointing in a forward position that
extends the wheel base and will stabilize the chair.
Ramps - Be sure of your own capabilities, limitations and
strength before attempting to go up a ramp. Correct
techniques on ramp negotiation should be shown to you by
a qualified professional. Assistance is recommended when
going up or down inclines greater than 10
o
. If you must stop on
an incline, avoid sudden, abrupt movement when you resume
movement. Because of backward angle of the chair, sudden
abrupt movement could cause instability. Attempting to use
the wheel lock brakes could result in accidental locking, tipping
to one side, or cause a sudden stop. Avoid changing direction
when going down an incline, as this could result in instability
of tipping over.

Overview

This document describes the Silver Sport 1 Full Reclining Wheelchair, a Drive brand product designed for safe and stable use, offering a lifetime limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

Function Description

The Silver Sport 1 Full Reclining Wheelchair is designed to provide mobility and support for individuals requiring assistance with movement. Its primary function is to offer a comfortable and secure seating solution that can be propelled manually or assisted by a caregiver. The full reclining feature allows the user to adjust their seating position for comfort and various activities. The wheelchair is built to exacting standards, ensuring dependability and years of service.

Usage Features

The wheelchair incorporates several features to enhance user experience and safety:

Stability and Safety:

  • The wheelchair is designed to be safe and stable as long as the user's center of gravity is maintained during normal activities.
  • Users should exercise caution when performing activities that shift their center of gravity, such as reaching or leaning.
  • When reaching for objects that require leaning, ensure front casters are pointing forward to extend the wheelbase and stabilize the chair.
  • Wheel Locks: These must be engaged before getting in or out of the chair, leaning forward, or when using an elevator or wheelchair lift. Proper adjustment ensures the lock shoe engages at least 1/8" of the rear wheel. Locks are engaged by pushing the handle completely forward. Adjustments can be made by loosening or tightening the nut on the carriage bolt, then sliding the clamp toward the rear wheel while the handle is engaged in the locked position. The nut and bolt should be tightened to secure the position, and the locking action tested before use.
  • Ramps: Users should assess their capabilities, limitations, and strength before attempting to go up a ramp. Professional instruction on ramp negotiation techniques is recommended. Assistance is advised for inclines greater than 10°. If stopping on an incline, avoid sudden, abrupt movements when resuming. Sudden movements can cause instability due to the chair's backward angle. Using wheel lock brakes on an incline could lead to accidental locking, tipping, or sudden stops. Avoid changing direction on a decline, as this can cause instability or tipping over.
  • Footrests/Leg Rests: The length of the footrests or leg rests should be adjusted with the user sitting in the wheelchair and their feet on the footplates. Loosen the bolt on the clamp around the support assembly, then raise or lower the footplate to the desired position for maximum thigh support. The front rigging should not be so low as to cause uncomfortable pressure on the thighs or be lower than 2-1/2" from the ground to ensure clearance.
  • Elevating Leg Rests: To adjust, lift the footplate on the leg rest assembly to the desired position; it will automatically lock into place. To lower, push out on the leg rest lever and lower the footplate.
  • Opening the Chair: Tilt the wheelchair to one side and push down on the seat rail until it is fully opened.
  • Closing/Folding the Chair: First, fold the footplates to a vertical position. Then, grab the seat with both hands at the front and back edge and lift. Alternatively, tilt the chair to one side and lift up on the seat rail.
  • Removable Arms: Arms can be removed by depressing the spring button and lifting them out of the front and rear sockets.
  • Reaching and Leaning: Avoid reaching so far that it requires shifting in the seat or bending over out of the chair. When reaching forward, rotate casters to the front of the wheelchair and engage wheel locks to prevent tipping. Do not lean over or apply weight to the top of the wheelchair back, as this can cause tipping. When extending arms over the back, only reach as far as possible without altering the seating position.
  • Standing: Do not stand on the wheelchair or apply weight to the footrests when getting in or out. Do not use wheel locks to slow descent down an incline.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the wheelchair:

  • Tires: The solid rubber tires require minimal maintenance. They should be cleaned occasionally with a damp cloth. Replace them if they become severely worn or show cracking.
  • Front Casters: Casters should be checked and lubricated periodically. To lubricate, remove the fork and grease the caster stem bearings. Lubricate the wheel bearings by removing the wheel from the fork. Reassemble the fork and wheel, tightening nuts until no play remains, but the wheels still roll freely. If the nut is too loose, the caster will shimmy; if too tight, the chair will be hard to steer.
  • Wheels: The large rear wheels should be inspected at least once a month for proper tightness. If a wheel wobbles or is loose, release the lock nut and slightly tighten the axle bolt. Test for proper tightness by leaning the chair to one side and spinning the adjusted wheel.
  • General Care: Wipe chrome parts with a clean, soft cloth at least once a week. All metal parts can be cleaned with auto wax or similar products. If exposed to moisture, dry immediately. Avoid using abrasive cleansers that could scratch the finish.
  • Non-Durable Components: The warranty does not cover non-durable components such as rubber accessories, casters, and grips, which are subject to normal wear and tear and require periodic replacement.
