CAUTION:
Stability - Wheelchair is designed to be safe and stable as long
as center of gravity is maintained while going about normal
activities. Care must be taken while performing activities that
shift your center of gravity in the chair. Never reach so far that
require you to shift in the seat or bend over out of the chair.
When you have to reach for objects that require you to lean,
be certain front casters are pointing in a forward position that
extends the wheel base and will stabilize the chair.
Ramps - Be sure of your own capabilities, limitations and
strength before attempting to go up a ramp. Correct
techniques on ramp negotiation should be shown to you by
a qualified professional. Assistance is recommended when
going up or down inclines greater than 10
o
. If you must stop on
an incline, avoid sudden, abrupt movement when you resume
movement. Because of backward angle of the chair, sudden
abrupt movement could cause instability. Attempting to use
the wheel lock brakes could result in accidental locking, tipping
to one side, or cause a sudden stop. Avoid changing direction
when going down an incline, as this could result in instability
of tipping over.

Overview

The Drive Blue Streak Wheelchair is a mobility aid designed to provide safe and stable transportation for individuals. It is engineered with quality and manufactured to meet rigid specifications, aiming to surpass user expectations.

Function Description

The primary function of the Drive Blue Streak Wheelchair is to provide a means of personal mobility for individuals who require assistance with walking or standing. It allows users to move independently or with assistance, both indoors and outdoors, on smooth, stable, and level surfaces. The wheelchair is designed to maintain stability as long as the user's center of gravity is maintained during normal activities.

Usage Features

The wheelchair incorporates several features to enhance its usability and safety:

  • Wheel Locks: These are crucial for safety when transferring in or out of the chair, leaning forward, or using an elevator or wheelchair lift. The wheel locks should be fully engaged by pushing the handle completely forward. Proper adjustment ensures at least 1/8" engagement when locked. Adjustments are made by loosening or tightening a nut on the carriage bolt, sliding the clamp toward the rear wheel, and then re-tightening. It is essential to test the locking action before actual use.
  • Adjusting Length of Footrest/Leg Rest: The footrests and leg rests are adjustable to provide maximum support for the user's thighs. To adjust, the user should be seated in the wheelchair with their feet on the footplates. The bolt on the clamp around the support assembly is loosened, and the footplate is raised or lowered to the desired position. It's important that the front rigging is not so low as to cause discomfort or be lower than 2-1/2" from the ground to ensure clearance.
  • Adjusting/Elevating Leg Rest: For elevating leg rests, the footplate is lifted to the desired position, and it will automatically lock into place. To lower, the leg rest lever is pushed out, and the footplate is lowered.
  • Opening the Chair: To open the wheelchair, it should be tilted to one side, and the seat rail should be pushed down until the chair is fully opened.
  • Closing/Folding the Chair: To fold the chair, first, the footplates should be moved to a vertical position. Then, the seat should be grabbed with both hands at the front and back edges and lifted. Alternatively, the chair can be tilted to one side, and the seat rail lifted.
  • Removable Arms: The arms can be removed by depressing a spring button and lifting them out of the front and rear sockets. This feature can facilitate transfers or allow for closer access to tables.
  • Removable Swing-Away Foot Rests/Leg Rests: These can be removed by releasing the lock on the front rigging lever, swinging the footrest/leg rest out and sideways, and then lifting to remove. This also aids in transfers and maneuverability in tight spaces.
  • Ramp Negotiation: When encountering ramps, users should be aware of their capabilities and strength. Proper techniques for ramp negotiation should be learned from a qualified professional. Assistance is recommended for inclines greater than 10°. If stopping on an incline, sudden, abrupt movement should be avoided when resuming movement, as this could cause instability. Using wheel lock brakes on an incline could lead to accidental locking, tipping, or a sudden stop. Changing direction while going down an incline should also be avoided to prevent instability or tipping.
  • Reaching and Leaning: Users should avoid reaching so far that they need to shift in the seat or bend over out of the chair. When reaching for objects that require leaning, the front casters should be rotated to a forward position to extend the wheelbase and stabilize the chair, helping to prevent tipping. Leaning over or applying weight to the top of the wheelchair back can also cause tipping. When extending arms over the back, users should only reach as far as their arm can extend without altering their seating position.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and safe operation of the wheelchair:

  • Wheel Locks: Periodically check and adjust the wheel locks to ensure proper engagement (at least 1/8" when locked).
  • Tires: The solid rubber tires require minimal maintenance, primarily occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. They should be replaced if they become severely worn or show signs of cracking.
  • Front Casters: Casters should be checked and lubricated periodically. Lubrication involves removing the fork, greasing the caster stem bearings, and lubricating the wheel bearings after removing the wheel from the fork. After reassembly, nuts should be tightened until no play remains, but the wheels should still roll freely. If the nut is too loose, the caster may shimmy; if too tight, steering will be difficult.
  • Wheels: The large rear wheels should be inspected at least once a month to ensure proper tightness. If a wheel wobbles or is loose, the lock nut should be released, and the axle bolt tightened slightly. Proper tightness can be tested by leaning the chair to one side and spinning the adjusted wheel.
  • General Care: Chrome parts should be wiped with a clean, soft cloth at least once a week. All metal parts can be cleaned with auto wax or similar products. If exposed to moisture, parts should be dried immediately. Abrasive cleansers that could scratch the finish should not be used.

Safety Warnings and Precautions

  • Always read the manual carefully before attempting to adjust or operate the wheelchair.
  • This wheelchair is not approved as a seat for use in vehicles. Users should always transfer to a vehicle manufacturer's approved seat and use available safety restraints.
  • Do not operate the wheelchair on roadways, streets, or any surfaces with vehicular traffic.
  • Avoid operating on inclines of 10% or greater without proper assistance.
  • Always engage wheel locks completely when getting in or out of the wheelchair or when using an elevator or wheelchair lift.
  • Ensure the wheelchair is on a smooth, stable, and level area with wheel locks engaged before transferring a user.
  • Do not adjust footrests lower than 2-1/2" from the floor.
  • Do not stand on or apply weight to the footrests when getting in or out of the wheelchair.
  • Do not stand on the wheelchair.
  • Do not use wheel locks to slow descent down an incline.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in direction while going down an incline, as this could cause instability or tipping.
