Always
replace
the
dust
covers
on
the
half
couplings
when
the
ram
is
disconnected
from
the
hose.
(The
ram
-half
coupling
dust
cover
is
the
metal
unit
that
is
attached
by
a
small
chain;
the
hose
-half
coupling
dust
cover
is
the
plastic
cap.)
Always
pump
a
slight
amount
of
oil
through
the
hose
before
connecting
it
to
a
ram
(see
Point
5
under
Operating
Instructions)
and
remove
all
foreign
matter
from
the
connecting
threads
before
connecting
units.
If
pump
will
not
operate
after
having
been
on
the
shelf
for
some
time,
it
may
have
a
sticking
suction
ball
due
to
the
residual
magnetism
which
could
have
built
up
while
the
pump
was
in
storage.
A
light
hammer
tap
on
the
pump
body,
with
the
pump
in
an
inverted
position,
will
reorient
the
ball
on
its
seat
and
thus
free
the
suction
valve.
Operate
the
lever
with
the
pump
in
an
inverted
position
until
pump
be-
comes
primed.
Do
not
unscrew
the
bleeder
screw
all
the
way
out
of
the
pump
body.
If
this
is
done,
the
bleeder
screw
ball
may
be
lost
when
the
oil
squirts
out.
If
the
bleeder
screw
ball
is
not
in
place,
the
pump
cannot
possibly
raise
or
hold
a
load.
After
the
bleeder
screw
has
been
opened
two
or
three
full
turns,
no
amount
of
additional
turning
of
the
bleeder
screw
knob
will
speed
up
the
ram
retraction.
The
ram
retraction
speed
under
"no
load"
conditions
depends
en-
tirely
on
the
spring
force
of
the
retraction
spring
for
spring
returned
rams
and,
as
the
spring
approaches
its
closed
height
position,
the
retraction
force
is
quite
low
so
that
the
retraction
speed
is
correspondingly
slow.
7
Do
not
use
the
hydraulic
hose
as
a
carrying
handle.
If
the
ram
is
lifted
and
carried
by
its
hose,
the
threaded
connection
can
be
severely
strained
and
can
cause
oil
leakage
at
the
pipe
thread.

The
RAM
-PAC
units
are
suitable
for
temper-
atures
between
20°F.
and
140
0
F.
For
higher
or
lower
temperatures,
the
Duff
-Norton
En-
gineering
Department
should
be
consulted.
Avoid
jamming
the
ram
in
its
fully
extended
position.
The
underside
of
the
gland
nut
gives
a
mechanical
stop
which
is
suitable
for
emer-
gency
stops
but
it
should
not
be
used
repeated-
ly
as
a
stop.
Hydraulic
gages
should
not
be
left
in
a
hy-
draulic
circuit
for
a
prolonged
period
of
time
under
pulsating
loads
due
to
possible
damage
and
loss
of
gage
accuracy.
If
the
RAM
-PAC
units
are
used
properly,
they
will
give
long
service
at
a
remarkably
high
degree
of
efficiency.
Reasonable
care
must
be
taken
to
keep
the
rams
and
pumps
clean.
This
is
especially
true
of
the
ram
and
the
pump
plunger
for
if
they
become
covered
with
dirt
and
grime,
some
of
it
will
gradually
get
mixed
in
with
the
oil
and
will
cause
rapid
wear
of
the
packing
and
will,
in
time,
score
the
cylinder
walls.
When
the
RAM
-PAC
units
are
not
in
use,
the
rams
should
be
stored
in
the
fully
retract-
ed
position.
They
should
also
be
stored
in
a
reasonably
clean
and
dry
location
and
should
not
be
subjected
to
excessively
high
or
low
temperatures.
Always
use
DUFF
-NORTON
HYDRAULIC
JACK
OIL
for
the
RAM
-PAC
units.
This
oil
has
been
carefully
selected
for
its
viscosity,
lubricity
and
compatibility
with
the
packing
in
the
RAM
-PAC
unit.
14
At
least
once
a
year,
the
oil
should
be
drained
and
the
units
fl
ushed
with
a
cleaning
solvent.
After
fl
ushing
and
draining,
refill
the
unit
with
clean
DUFF
-NORTON
HYDRAULIC
JACK
OIL.
