Overview

This document provides an instruction manual for a DUMAS SPINNAKER automatic watch. It covers the watch's function, how to operate its features, and important notes regarding its use and water resistance.

Function Description

The DUMAS SPINNAKER is an automatic, self-winding mechanical timepiece. This means it does not require a battery to operate. Instead, its movement is powered by the natural motions of the wearer's wrist. As the user moves their arm throughout the day, the internal rotor winds the mainspring, providing power to the watch. For initial startup or if the watch has stopped, it can also be manually wound. The watch displays the hour, minute, second, and date. It features a screw-down crown, which is a critical component for ensuring water resistance, and a uni-directional turning bezel, typically used for timing purposes, such as tracking elapsed time during dives.

Usage Features

Screw-down Crown Operation:

The screw-down crown is essential for maintaining the watch's water resistance. It has three main positions:

  • Position [0] (Closed): The crown is securely screwed down, making the watch water-resistant. It is crucial to always ensure the crown is in this position when not setting the watch, especially in environments where moisture is present.
  • Position [1] (1st Click - Unscrewed/Winding Position): To reach this position, the crown must first be unscrewed by turning it anti-clockwise until it moves freely without tension. Once unscrewed, gently pulling the crown out to the first click allows for manual winding of the mainspring.
  • Position [2] (2nd Click - Date Setting Position): From Position [1], pulling the crown out further to the second click enables the user to set the date.
  • Position [3] (3rd Click - Time Setting Position): From Position [2], pulling the crown out to the third click allows for setting the time.

Winding the Mainspring:

Before initial use or if the watch has stopped, it is recommended to manually wind the mainspring to start the movement.

  1. Unscrew the crown by turning it anti-clockwise until it is in Position [1].
  2. Turn the crown clockwise 15-20 times. This will start the watch moving naturally after a slight shake.
  3. After winding, push the crown back in and screw it securely into Position [0] to ensure water resistance.

Setting the Time:

  1. Unscrew the crown and pull it out to Position [3] (the 2nd click from the unscrewed position).
  2. Turn the crown clockwise to set the correct hour and minute.
  3. Push the crown back in and screw it securely into Position [0].

Setting the Date:

  1. Unscrew the crown and pull it out to Position [2] (the 1st click from the unscrewed position).
  2. Turn the crown anti-clockwise to set the correct date.
  3. Push the crown back in and screw it securely into Position [0].
  • Important Note: Do not set the date between 9:00 P.M. and 4:00 A.M. as this can damage the movement.

Adjusting the Band (Mesh Bracelet):

The watch features a mesh bracelet with an adjustable clasp.

  1. Pull the clasp upwards to unlock it.
  2. Open the snap located underneath the clasp.
  3. Adjust the length of the mesh band by sliding the clasp to the desired position.
  4. Close the flap under the clasp to secure the adjustment.
  5. Push the clasp back in to tighten the mesh and lock it in place.

Automatic Movement Operation:

For the watch to function optimally and remain fully wound, it must be worn for at least eight hours each day. The automatic movement relies on the wearer's wrist and arm movements to wind the mainspring. While manual winding provides initial power, it may not be sufficient to fully wind the watch for extended operation. If the watch stops overnight or loses time, it indicates that it is not being fully wound through wear.

If the watch has stopped after a period of not being worn, gently move the watch side-to-side 20 to 30 times to engage the rotor, or gently turn the crown 5 to 10 times to get the second hand running at its normal speed. If the watch is running smoothly, avoid over-winding the crown.

Maintenance Features

Water Resistance:

The DUMAS SPINNAKER watch has varying levels of water resistance, indicated by ratings such as 50M/5ATM, 100M/10ATM, 200M/20ATM, 500M/50ATM, and 1000M/100ATM. These ratings serve as a guide, and actual water resistance can be affected by factors like water temperature, salinity, and how the watch is used underwater.

  • Crucial Maintenance for Water Resistance: Always ensure the screw-down crown is securely screwed down (Position [0]) when the watch is not being set. Failure to do so will compromise the watch's water resistance and may void the warranty.

  • Activities and Water Resistance:

    • Splash/Showering & Swimming/Bathing: Generally permissible for most water resistance ratings (50M and above).
    • Brief Swimming/Water Sports: Permissible for watches rated 100M and above.
    • Prolonged Swimming/Free Diving: Permissible for watches rated 200M and above.
    • Scuba Diving: Permissible for watches rated 500M and above.
    • Professional Deep Sea Diving: Permissible only for watches rated 1000M and above.
  • Avoidance of Extreme Conditions: Never wear the watch in a jacuzzi, hot shower, or steam room. Steam can penetrate the watch case despite watertight seals, leading to condensation inside the watch. This condensation can affect and damage the inner workings of the watch, potentially causing long-term issues.

General Care:

The water resistance of the timepiece may eventually be compromised over time due to general wear and tear and use under adverse conditions. Regular checks by a professional watchmaker are recommended to maintain its water resistance and overall performance.
