Barrel Overflow in Heavy Rain

Diagnosing and addressing scenarios where the rain barrel continues to overflow during heavy rainfall.

Overview

This document describes the Rain Barrel Overflow Drain Hose Kit, Model Number F-RN090, which is designed to prevent flooding by providing an overflow mechanism for rain barrels.

Function Description

The primary function of this kit is to add an overflow hose to a rain barrel, allowing excess water to drain away from the barrel and its surroundings, such as a building's foundation. This helps manage rainwater runoff and prevents the barrel from overflowing, which could lead to flooding or water damage. The kit includes a high-capacity drain hose to effectively channel excess water.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Hose: 5" (160 cm) accordion drain hose.
  • Hole Size for Installation: A 1.5" (38mm) hole is required for the hose seal. The kit includes a 1.5" (38mm) hole saw for this purpose.
  • Material Compatibility: The kit is not for use on metal drums. It is intended for use with standard rain barrels.
  • Installation Location: The hose seal should be positioned at least 2" (50mm) below the top rim of the barrel. The bottom of the seal determines the new "FULL" water level in the rain barrel.

Usage Features

  • Flood Prevention: By draining excess water, the kit effectively prevents the rain barrel from overflowing, protecting property from water damage.
  • Flexible Placement: The overflow hose can be extended to dispense water into a storm drain or onto a graded surface that leads away from the home's foundation.
  • Multi-Barrel Systems:
    • Linking Barrels: The kit can be integrated into systems with multiple linked rain barrels. It is recommended to fit the overflow hose on the last barrel in a series, provided all barrels are on the same level.
    • Level Management: If the drain hose is not on the last barrel, it must be positioned higher than the level of the linking hose to allow all linked barrels to fill completely.
    • Bottom-Linked Barrels: For bottom-linked barrels, the overflow hose should be added to the lower of the two barrels. The overflow hose inlet's level will dictate the "full" level for both barrels.
  • Water Level Control: The placement of the hose seal dictates the maximum "full" water level in the rain barrel, ensuring a consistent overflow point.
  • Easy Installation: The kit includes all necessary components (hose, seal, hole saw) and provides clear, step-by-step instructions for installation. Tools required include a marker, drill, safety gloves, and safety glasses.
  • Hose Insertion Tip: Using soapy water or hand lotion on the hose cuff can reduce friction, making it easier to insert the hose into the seal. The seal itself can be crimped into a "U" shape for easier insertion into the barrel hole.
  • Water Diversion: The overflow water can be directed into a 5-gallon bucket or watering can for immediate use in watering tasks.

Maintenance Features

  • Hose Removal (Discouraged): While not recommended, if the hose must be removed from the seal, it should be done by holding the hose near the seal and gently wiggling it while pulling. Pulling on the accordion section directly is discouraged as it may damage the hose. For storage, the accordion hose can be gently collapsed to shorten its length.
  • Troubleshooting Overflow:
    • Obstruction Check: If the barrel continues to overflow in heavy rain, ensure the hose is not blocked or obstructed.
    • Hose Level Check: Verify that no point on the hose is higher than the outlet on the barrel, which could impede flow.
    • Capacity Issue: If the volume of incoming water exceeds the hose's capacity, an additional overflow hose may be necessary to handle the larger flow.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement parts and other accessories are available online at www.earthmindedconsumerproducts.com under the "product > replacement parts" section.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always read instructions thoroughly before installation to avoid damage or injury.
  • When drilling, hold the drill firmly with both hands.
  • If the barrel is already in use, drain the water at least 6" (150mm) below the drilling outlet to prevent the drill or cord from contacting water, reducing the risk of electrocution.
  • Wear safety gloves and safety glasses during installation.
