Overview

The Earthwise CVPS44010 is a versatile 2-in-1 lithium convertible chain saw and pole saw, designed for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety. This tool is suitable for various cutting tasks, from pruning high branches to felling small trees.

Function Description:

The CVPS44010 functions as both a handheld chain saw and an extended-reach pole saw. In its chain saw configuration, it is used for general cutting tasks. When converted to a pole saw, it allows users to trim limbs and branches at a distance, enhancing safety by keeping the operator away from falling debris and high-up cutting areas. The tool is powered by a 40V DC lithium battery pack, ensuring cordless operation. It features an automatic chain oiling system to maintain chain lubrication during use, a chain brake for emergency stops, and an adjustable pole length for reaching various heights.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input: 40 V, DC Only
  • Speed: 9 m/s
  • Bar Length/Type: 10 in. Oregon Bar / 104MLEA041
  • Chain Length/Type: 10 in. Oregon Chain / 90PX040X
  • Extended Length: 8 ft. (pole saw configuration)
  • Weight: 10.3 lbs
  • Battery: 40V, 2Ah sealed lithium battery pack
  • Charger: CA Compliant (Model No. CHL80040)
  • Charging Time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes for a full charge.
  • Chain Oil Consumption: Approximately 0.15 fl. oz. (5ml) per minute of use.

Usage Features:

The CVPS44010 is designed with several features to optimize its use and ensure operator safety:

  • 2-in-1 Convertible Design: Easily switches between a handheld chain saw and a pole saw. The conversion involves detaching the rear handle and cutting head from the telescopic pole, then reattaching them as needed.
  • Telescopic Pole: The pole length is adjustable, allowing users to extend it to the minimum length required to reach the limb or shrub to be cut. The pole is secured in position by turning a locking collar clockwise.
  • Angle Adjustment Button: The pole saw head can be adjusted to different sawing angles, typically between -20 and 60 degrees, to facilitate cutting in various positions.
  • Safety Button and Trigger Switch: To start the tool, the safety button must be pressed in with the thumb, and then the switch trigger squeezed with the fingers. Releasing the trigger turns the tool off.
  • Chain Brake: For emergency stops, the hand guard can be pushed forward to engage the chain brake, stopping the chain immediately. The motor will not start if the chain brake is engaged.
  • Battery Pack: The tool uses a 40V lithium battery pack. The battery meter has 3 LED lights to indicate capacity (three green for full, two green for 25-80%, one green for 5-25%). It is recommended to charge the battery when one light is illuminated.
  • Chain Oiling System: Features an oil tank cap and an oil inspection window. The system automatically lubricates the chain during operation. Users should ensure the oil tank is filled with good quality bar and chain oil (or unused SAE 30 weight motor oil if not available) and check the oil level frequently.
  • Proper Cutting Stance: Emphasizes maintaining a firm grip with both hands, keeping elbows locked in a "straight arm" position to resist kickback, and ensuring proper footing and balance.
  • Kickback Prevention: Operators are advised to maintain a firm grip, avoid overreaching, and not cut above shoulder height to prevent unintended tip contact or chain pinching, which can cause kickback.
  • Felling and Limbing Procedures: Detailed instructions are provided for felling small trees (up to 6-7 inches in diameter) using single or notch cuts, and for limbing fallen trees. Emphasis is placed on clearing the work area, establishing an escape route, and considering environmental factors like wind.
  • Springpoles: Warnings are given regarding cutting limbs under tension (springpoles), which can cause sudden and dangerous spring back.
  • Electrical Safety: Users are warned to avoid cutting near electrical power lines and to maintain a minimum distance of 50 ft. (15m) from overhead electrical lines to prevent electrocution.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the CVPS44010:

  • Chain Tension: The chain tension should be checked frequently and adjusted as needed. A cold chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the guide bar, is snug, but can be turned by hand without binding. A warm chain will show approximately 0.050 in. (1.25mm) of slack. New chains tend to stretch and require frequent re-tensioning.
  • Chain Sharpening: Cutters should be sharpened uniformly to specific angles (30 degrees for top plate filing angle, 80 degrees for side plate angle) using a 5/32 in. diameter round file and holder. The depth gauge clearance should be maintained at 0.025 in. (0.6 mm) using a flat file and depth gauge jointer. Gloves should be worn during sharpening.
  • Chain and Bar Lubrication: The automatic oiling system requires the oil tank to be filled with quality bar and chain oil. It is normal for oil to seep from the saw when not in use, so the oil tank should be emptied after each use for storage. For long-term storage (3 months or longer), the chain should be lightly lubricated to prevent rust.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance: The guide bar should be inspected for wear or damage and inverted periodically to distribute wear evenly. Any burrs or thinning of the rails should be filed smooth. Replace the guide bar if it shows signs of excessive wear, bending, or cracked rails.
  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned with mild soap and a damp cloth. Avoid letting liquid enter the tool or submerging any part of it.
  • Battery Storage: To prolong battery life, store the battery indoors in a cool, dry, controlled climate. Fully charge the battery pack every 3 months, even when not in use.
  • Replacement Parts: When replacing the guide bar and chain, use only identical replacement parts specified by the manufacturer to ensure safety and proper operation.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues such as the unit not running, overheating, or the chain not rotating.
  • Battery Disposal: Lithium-ion batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly, as local, state, or federal laws may prohibit their disposal with common household waste. The RBRC seal indicates that recycling costs have been paid, and users can contact 1-800-8-BATTERY for recycling locations.
