This document is the owner's manual for the East Oak Patio Heater, models UR50BN2, UR50BK2, UR50GN2, and UR50WH2, which boasts a 50,000 BTU output.
Function Description:
The East Oak Patio Heater is designed for outdoor use to provide warmth. It operates on propane gas and is intended to be a source of radiant heat. The appliance is designed to be used in well-ventilated outdoor spaces, such as patios, and should not be used indoors or in enclosed areas due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards. The heater utilizes a standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (sold separately) for fuel.
Important Technical Specifications:
- BTU Output: 50,000 BTU
- Fuel Type: Propane gas (vapor withdrawal supply system)
- Propane Cylinder Compatibility: Standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (approximately 12.2 in. / 31cm diameter and 17.9 in. / 45.5cm high). The cylinder must be constructed and marked in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or CAN/CSA-B339 specifications, include a listed overfilling prevention device, and have a connection device compatible with the appliance.
- Maximum Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 250 psi / 1750 kPa
- Minimum Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 5 psi / 35kPa
- Manifold Pressure with Regulator: 11 inch W.C / 2.74 kPa
- Minimum Hourly Input Rating for Automatic Operation: 17,000 Btu / 4.98 kW
- Clearances from Combustible Materials: Minimum three (3) feet from the sides and three (3) feet from the top.
- Installation Altitude: Installation at altitudes above 2000 ft (610 m) must comply with local codes, or ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54 or CSA B149.1.
- Assembly Time: Estimated 60 minutes (two adults required).
- Wind Speed Limit for Operation: Below 10 mph.
- Reduced Efficiency: Unit will operate at reduced efficiency below 40°F.
Usage Features:
- Ignition System: Features a control knob for adjusting heat output (HIGH to LOW) and an igniter button for lighting the main flame.
- Safety Precautions:
- Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Emphasizes outdoor use only to prevent carbon monoxide accumulation.
- Explosion/Fire Hazard: Strict warnings against storing propane near heat or ignition sources, using the heater in spaces with volatile combustibles, and maintaining adequate clearances from flammable materials.
- Burn Hazard: Advises against leaving the heater unattended when hot and keeping it out of reach of children.
- Leak Testing: Requires thorough leak testing with soapy water before initial use and whenever gas connections are loosened or removed. Never use a flame for leak testing.
- Propane Cylinder Storage: Propane cylinders must be stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area, out of reach of children, and never in enclosed spaces. Disconnected cylinders must have dust caps tightly installed.
- Hose and Regulator: Only the pressure regulator and hose assembly supplied with the appliance must be used.
- Airflow: Requires adequate clearances around air openings into the combustion chamber and clear burner passages.
- Operation Steps:
- Turn on the valve on the gas cylinder.
- Press and turn the control knob to HIGH (counter-clockwise 90 degrees).
- Hold down the control knob and press the igniter button repeatedly until the main flame ignites. Release the control knob after 10 seconds.
- Turn the control knob to LOW and leave it for at least 5 minutes before adjusting to the desired temperature.
- If the flame goes out, turn off the heater, wait 5 minutes for gas to dissipate, then re-light.
- Shut Down: Turn the cylinder valve clockwise to OFF and disconnect the regulator when the heater is not in use.
- Visual Indicators: Emitter screen becomes bright red when hot. Burner flames should be blue with straight yellow tops; excessive yellow flame or thick black smoke indicates an issue.
- Assembly: Requires two adults, a cross-head screwdriver, an extra wrench, and a ladder. Instructions include attaching the wheel assembly, base, support brackets, posts, cylinder housing, burner assembly, reflector panels, and reflector plate. A sand box is included for stability, to be filled with sand and water. The 20 lb. gas cylinder is secured with webbing.
Maintenance Features:
- Regular Inspection: The heater should be thoroughly inspected before each use and annually by a qualified service person.
- Cleaning:
- Keep exterior surfaces clean with warm soapy water.
- Ensure the control compartment, burners, and circulating air passageway are kept clean.
- Check for spider or insect nests in burner or orifices.
- Clean burner holes by using a heavy-duty pipe cleaner.
- Clean dome and burner screen with warm soapy water if carbon deposits develop.
- Hose Inspection: Inspect the visible portion of the hose before each use; replace if leaks are found.
- Part Replacement: Any guard or protective device removed for servicing must be replaced prior to placing back in service. Only manufacturer-specified replacement hose assemblies and pressure regulators should be used.
- Storage: If the heater is to be stored indoors, the propane cylinder must be disconnected and stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
- Warranty: East Oak offers a limited warranty with varying periods for different components:
- Burner Assembly: 1 Year (Material and Manufacturing Defects)
- Base/Reflector Shield/Regulator/Gas Hose/Ignition/Control Knob: 3 Years (Material and Manufacturing Defects)
- Cylinder Housing/Lower Post/Upper Post/Support Bracket/Wheel Kit: 3 Years (Will not rust through)
- The warranty does not cover UV damage, normal wear and tear, cosmetic blemishes, damage from misuse, accident, abuse, improper care, acts of nature, or arbitrary repair/modification by the customer. East Oak will provide replacement parts, but the customer is responsible for installation.
