Usage Features:
The PB-252 LA is designed for ease of use with several operational features:
- Stop Switch: A "SLIDE SWITCH" on the handle allows for easy starting and stopping of the engine.
- Throttle Position Lever: This lever controls engine speed, allowing adjustment between idle and full throttle positions. Friction washers help maintain the set throttle lever position.
- Throttle Trigger: A spring-loaded trigger returns to idle when released, enabling gradual acceleration for optimal technique.
- Choke: Located on top of the air cleaner, the choke lever has "COLD START" (closed) and "RUN" (open) positions for starting the engine.
- Purge Bulb: Pumping the purge bulb draws fresh fuel from the tank to the carburetor, removing air and ensuring easier starting. It should be pumped until fuel is visible and flows freely, plus an additional 4-5 times.
- Recoil Starter Handle: Used for manual engine starting with rapid, firm pulls. Users are cautioned not to let the rope snap back.
- Blower Pipes: The unit features an exclusive positive locking system for installing and removing blower pipes. The manual details a two-step process for secure attachment, ensuring a firm connection and allowing for tightening if connections loosen over time.
- Operating Speed Control: Users are advised to use reduced speed for light-duty tasks or to comply with noise regulations. For continuous use, the throttle position lever can be set. Lower speeds are recommended for blowing debris from hard surfaces and minimizing dust, while higher speeds are for lawns and flowerbeds.
- Warm-up: The engine should be allowed to warm up for a few minutes at a fast idle before use, and for 3 minutes before operating at full speed.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the PB-252 LA. The manual outlines a detailed maintenance schedule based on skill levels (Level 1: Easy to do, common tools; Level 2: Moderate difficulty, specialized tools/knowledge).
- Air Filter: Clean daily. Remove and brush dirt from the cover and filter. Replace if damaged or deformed.
- Fuel Filter: Inspect/replace regularly. Remove and clean any loose dirt from around the fuel cap and empty fuel tank before replacing the filter.
- Spark Plug: Inspect/clean/replace as needed (Level 2). Use only NGK BPM-8Y (BPMR-8Y in Canada) spark plug. Adjust gap to 0.65 mm (0.026 in.) and tighten to 150-170 kgf•cm (130-150 in•lbf).
- Cooling System: Inspect/clean regularly (Level 2). Ensure cooling air can pass freely through the cylinder fin area. Clean the crankcase intake grill and cylinder fins to prevent overheating and engine seizure.
- Exhaust System (Spark Arrestor Screen): Inspect/clean/decarbonize regularly (Level 2). Carbon deposits can reduce engine output and cause overheating. The screen prevents hot carbon particles from escaping.
- Exhaust Port Cleaning: Clean deposits from the exhaust port using a wood or plastic scraping tool (Level 2). Care must be taken not to scratch the cylinder or piston.
- Carburetor Adjustment: New engines require a break-in period of at least two tanks of fuel before carburetor adjustments are made. Idle speed can be adjusted. For high-altitude operation (above 1,100 feet ASL), carburetor adjustments may be necessary by an authorized ECHO service dealer.
- Fuel Cap Gasket: Inspect/replace regularly.
- Fuel System (Hoses, Tank): Inspect/replace regularly.
- Muffler Spark Arrestor: Inspect/clean/replace regularly.
- Recoil Starter Rope: Inspect/clean regularly.
- Vacuum Bag (if applicable): Inspect/clean regularly.
- Screws/Nuts/Bolts: Inspect/tighten/replace regularly.
- Storage: For long-term storage (over 30 days), the unit should be stored in a dry, dust-free place, out of reach of children. The fuel tank should be drained completely, and the engine should be run until it stops to remove fuel from the carburetor. The spark plug should be removed, and 2-stroke engine oil poured into the cylinder before reinstalling the plug.
The manual emphasizes safety with various warnings and symbols:
- DANGER: Indicates actions that WILL lead to serious personal injury or death.
- WARNING: Indicates actions that CAN lead to serious personal injury or death.
- CAUTION: Indicates actions that MAY lead to minor or moderate personal injury.
- CIRCLE AND SLASH SYMBOL: Prohibits specific actions.
- Hot Surfaces: The muffler or catalytic muffler and surrounding cover can become extremely hot. Keep clear to avoid serious personal injury.
- Engine Exhaust: Contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm (California Proposition 65 warning). Do not operate indoors or in inadequately ventilated areas.
- Moving Parts: Keep hands, clothing, and loose objects away from all openings. Stop engine and disconnect the spark plug before servicing.
- Fuel Handling: Fuel is highly flammable. Use approved containers, avoid smoking or flames, refuel outdoors, and clean up spills immediately. Do not overfill.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear eye, ear, and head protection, hand protection (gloves), and slip-resistant footwear. A face filter mask is recommended.
- Work Area: Clear spectators, children, and animals (within 15m/50ft). Be aware of wind conditions and potential hazards like stones or metal objects.
- Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI): Advice is given to minimize RSI risk, including maintaining proper wrist position, taking breaks, reducing force, and seeking medical attention if symptoms occur.
- Engine Overheating: Continuous low-speed operation can lead to fuel/oil residue buildup and carbon on the spark arrestor screen, causing overheating and engine damage. Run at wide-open throttle for 5 minutes every hour to reduce buildup.
- Fire Prevention: The unit is equipped with a spark arrestor. Local fire agencies should be consulted for regulations.
The manual also includes information on parts/serial numbers, service, ECHO Consumer Product Support, and warranty.
