Overview

The Ecostrad iQ WiFi Heating Element is a sophisticated and intelligent heating solution designed for integration into fluid-filled towel rails or radiators. It offers advanced control and connectivity features, allowing users to manage their heating remotely via a smartphone app, in addition to local control through an intuitive touchscreen dial. This device is engineered to provide efficient and customizable heating for various spaces, with a strong emphasis on user safety and energy conservation.

Function Description

The primary function of the Ecostrad iQ WiFi Heating Element is to convert electrical energy into heat, which is then transferred to the fluid within a radiator or towel rail. This heated fluid circulates, warming the surrounding room or drying towels. The element operates within a 220-240V AC / 50Hz power supply and is available in various wattages from 100-1200W, making it suitable for a range of heating requirements.

At its core, the device features an internal thermostat that monitors either the room temperature (in Comfort and Eco modes) or the internal temperature of the heating fluid (in Radiator mode). Based on the selected mode and desired temperature, the element intelligently activates or deactivates its heating function to maintain the set point. When actively heating, a dedicated symbol on the display flashes, indicating operation.

The iQ WiFi Heating Element is designed to be a Class I appliance, meaning it must always be earthed for safety. It is intended for permanent installation within a suitable heating appliance and should never be operated in open air or in an empty radiator, as this can lead to malfunction. The element is factory-sealed as an integrated unit, and any attempt to open or tamper with it will invalidate the warranty.

Usage Features

The Ecostrad iQ WiFi Heating Element offers a comprehensive suite of usage features, accessible through both its touchscreen control dial and the Smart Life smartphone app.

Control Dial Features:

The control dial features a backlit LCD display that shows the current mode, set temperature, or time. It includes several touch-sensitive buttons for easy navigation:

  • Standby/On Button: Toggles the element between standby mode (displaying time, no heating) and active heating modes.
  • Mode Button: Cycles through the available heating modes: Comfort, Eco, Program, and Radiator.
  • Temperature Adjustment Buttons (∧ and ∨): Used to increase or decrease the set temperature in Comfort, Eco, and Radiator modes, or to adjust timer settings.
  • Child Lock: A safety feature that can be activated by pressing and holding the ∧ and ∨ keys for 5 seconds. This locks the display, preventing accidental changes to settings. A padlock icon appears when the child lock is active.

Heating Modes:

  • Comfort Mode: Maintains a constant, user-defined room temperature between 7-30 °C. The external thermostat measures ambient temperature, and the element heats as needed.
  • Eco Mode: Similar to Comfort mode, but designed for a lower, energy-saving room temperature, also adjustable between 7-30 °C. This mode is ideal for periods when less heat is required, such as during sleep or when away from home.
  • Program Mode: Allows the element to follow a customisable 24-hour program for each day of the week. Each hourly slot can be set to either Comfort or Eco temperature. This program is configured via the Smart Life app and provides automated heating schedules. If no program is set via the app, the element defaults to Eco mode for all intervals.
  • Radiator Mode: Controls the internal temperature of the heating fluid within the radiator, rather than the room temperature. The set internal temperature can range from 30-70 °C, adjustable in 5 °C steps. This mode also includes a Timer Function, allowing users to set the element to heat for a specific duration (0-8 hours in one-hour steps). Once the timer expires, the element automatically switches to standby mode.

Smart Life App Connectivity:

The element's iQ WiFi capability allows for seamless integration with the Smart Life app, providing remote control and enhanced programming options.

  • Easy Pairing: The element can be easily connected to the app via an auto-scan function. A countdown on the element's display indicates the pairing window, and a "PASS" message confirms successful connection.
  • Home Overview: The app displays all connected devices, showing their current status (online or offline).
  • Control Interface: Tapping on the element's listing in the app opens a detailed control interface. From here, users can:
    • Turn the element on/off.
    • Adjust set temperatures for all modes.
    • Choose between Comfort, Eco, Program, and Radiator modes.
    • Access a weekly programmer to create and modify custom heating schedules for Program mode.
    • Access Device Settings not available on the control dial.

Advanced App Settings (Device Settings):

  • Child Lock: Toggle the child lock on/off remotely.
  • Temperature Compensation: Adjust the element's temperature reading by -5 °C to +5 °C in 1 °C steps. This feature helps to calibrate the thermostat if the sensor's location (e.g., near a hot pipe or draughty doorway) causes it to read inaccurately compared to the average room temperature.
  • Open Window Detection: An energy-saving feature that can be set to OFF, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes. If the thermostat detects a sudden temperature drop (2 °C or more within 5 minutes), indicating an open window, the element temporarily switches to an anti-freeze state (heating only if the temperature drops below 7 °C). This prevents energy waste. The control dial displays "OPEN" when this function is triggered. After the set time, the element resumes its previous heating settings.

Maintenance Features

The Ecostrad iQ WiFi Heating Element is designed for minimal user maintenance, with a focus on professional installation and servicing to ensure safety and longevity.

  • Professional Installation: Installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with current IEE wiring regulations. This ensures correct electrical connection and proper integration into the heating system.
  • Fluid Management: The element is designed for use in fluid-filled radiators or towel rails. It is crucial that the heating appliance contains the correct volume of fluid (90% of total volume) and that a suitable glycol-based heating medium is used. Overfilling or underfilling can lead to operational issues or safety hazards. Any loss of heating fluid should be addressed by contacting the supplier. Calculating the correct volume of heating medium is a job for a professional.
  • Cleaning: The element must be disconnected from the mains power supply during cleaning. Users should avoid touching hot surfaces during operation and immediately after, as there is a risk of burns.
  • No User Servicing: The product is an integrated, factory-sealed unit. Users should never attempt to disconnect the control head from the heating element, open the element, or perform any internal repairs. All repairs and servicing must be carried out by a qualified person or the manufacturer's service agent. Any unauthorised interference will invalidate the warranty.
  • Power Cord Inspection: Users should regularly check for any damage to the mains plug or power cable. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid a hazard.
  • Disposal: In accordance with WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU, the element should not be disposed of with household waste. It must be taken to designated collection points for the free return of waste electrical and electronic equipment, facilitating recycling and preventing environmental harm.
