Overview

This document is a user manual for Electrolux chest freezers, covering models EC1501AOW, EC2201AOW, EC2801AOW, EC3201AOW, and EC4201AOW. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, daily use, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Electrolux chest freezer is designed for keeping foodstuffs and beverages in normal household and similar applications. It is suitable for freezing fresh food and storing frozen and deep-frozen food for extended periods. The appliance utilizes isobutane (R600a) as a refrigerant, a natural gas with high environmental compatibility.

Usage Features

Switching On and Temperature Regulation: To switch on the appliance, insert the plug into the wall socket. The pilot light will illuminate, and the temperature regulator should be turned clockwise to a medium setting for initial operation. The temperature is automatically regulated, but users can adjust the coldness by turning the regulator towards lower settings for minimum coldness or higher settings for maximum coldness. A medium setting is generally recommended. The exact temperature setting depends on room temperature, how often the lid is opened, the quantity of food stored, and the appliance's location.

Action Freeze Function: The Action Freeze function can be activated by pressing the dedicated switch on the control panel, indicated by the Action Freeze light. This function is useful for freezing fresh food and automatically stops after 52 hours. It can also be manually deactivated at any time by pressing the Action Freeze switch again.

High Temperature Alarm: The appliance features a high-temperature alarm system. An increase in the freezer temperature, for example, due to a power failure, is indicated by the Alarm light switching on and a buzzer sounding. The buzzer can be switched off by pressing the Alarm reset switch. During an alarm, no new food should be placed inside the freezer. The Alarm light will automatically switch off once normal conditions are restored.

Freezing Fresh Food: The freezer compartment is suitable for freezing fresh food. To freeze fresh food effectively, activate the Action Freeze function at least 24 hours before placing the food in the freezer compartment. The freezing process takes 24 hours, and no additional food should be added during this period. It is recommended to freeze only top-quality, fresh, and thoroughly cleaned foodstuffs. Food should be prepared in small portions, wrapped in aluminum foil or polythene to ensure airtight packages, and labeled with the freezing date to track storage time. Fresh, unfrozen food should not touch already frozen food to prevent temperature rise. Carbonated or fizzy drinks should not be placed in the freezer compartment as they may explode due to pressure.

Storage of Frozen Food: For optimal storage, ensure commercially frozen foodstuffs were adequately stored by the retailer and transferred to the freezer as quickly as possible. Avoid opening the lid frequently or leaving it open for extended periods. Once defrosted, food should not be re-frozen and must be consumed quickly or cooked immediately.

Opening and Closing the Lid: The lid is equipped with a tightly closing seal, which may create a vacuum, making it difficult to reopen immediately after closing. Users should wait a few minutes before attempting to reopen the lid, and the vacuum valve will assist in opening. It is important never to pull the handle with immense force.

Storage Baskets: The freezer includes storage baskets that can be hung on the upper edge or placed inside the freezer. Handles can be turned and fixed for these positions. The baskets are designed to slide into each other, and additional baskets can be purchased from a local Service Centre.

Security Lock: The freezer is equipped with a special security lock to prevent accidental locking. To close the freezer, push the key gently into the lock and turn it clockwise towards the symbol. To open, push the key gently into the lock and turn it counter-clockwise towards the symbol. Spare keys are available from the local Service Centre. It is crucial to keep the key away from children and remove it from the lock before discarding the old appliance.

Maintenance Features

Periodic Cleaning: Before any maintenance, the appliance must be switched off and disconnected from the mains socket. The appliance and its accessories should be regularly cleaned with warm water and neutral soap, paying careful attention to the lid seal. The interior should be thoroughly dried before reconnecting to the mains and switching on. Harsh detergents, abrasive products, highly perfumed cleaning products, or wax polishes should not be used on the inner side of the appliance to prevent damage to plastics and the cooling system. The outer casing can be cleaned with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. There is no need to clean the compressor area.

Defrosting the Freezer: The freezer should be defrosted when the frost layer reaches a thickness of approximately 10-15 mm. The ideal time for defrosting is when the freezer contains little to no food. To defrost, switch off the appliance, remove all stored food (wrapping it in several layers of newspaper and placing it in a cool location). Leave the lid open, remove the plug from the defrost water drain, and collect the defrost water on a tray. A plastic scraper can be used to remove ice quickly. Once defrosting is complete, the interior should be thoroughly dried, the plug refitted, and the appliance switched on. For initial cooling after defrosting, set the temperature regulator to maximum coldness and run the appliance for two to three hours.

Periods of Non-Operation: If the appliance will not be used for long periods, it should be switched off, disconnected from the mains, all food removed, defrosted, and cleaned. The lid should be left open to prevent unpleasant smells. If the cabinet is kept on, it is advisable to have someone check it periodically to prevent food spoilage in case of a power failure.

Replacing the Lamp: To replace the interior lamp, disconnect the mains plug from the socket. Replace the used lamp with a new one of the same power, specifically designed for household appliances (maximum power is indicated on the lamp cover). Reconnect the mains plug and open the lid to ensure the lamp comes on. The lamp cover should not be removed during replacement, and the freezer should not be operated if the lamp cover is damaged or missing.
